I recently revised my pages to reflect the more modern, although, unfortunately, less familiar, PinYin system for the romanization of Chinese words. Frankly, I'm a bit queazy about this and have to look twice at "Lao Zi" before my brain sees my old friend Laotze. But, for the most part, the Pin Yin spellings feel like a truer representation of the pronunciations I have learned.
Here is a list of a few words, terms and proper names commonly used in Daoist discussions:
Pin Yin (new) | Wade-Giles (old) |
---|---|
dao | tao |
de | teh, te |
wu wei | wu wei |
qi gong | ch'i kung |
tai ji quan | t'ai chi ch'uan |
Lao Zi | Lao Tzu, Lao Tze |
Zhuang Zi | Chuang Tzu, Chuang Tze |
Dao De Jing | Tao Teh Ching, Tao Te King |
Yi Jing | I Ching |
