A picture of me when I was in 3rd grade.
A recent picture of me.
Lived in New Delhi, India; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Paris, France. Spent junior high and high school in Scarsdale, New York.
Studied engineering and liberal arts as an undergraduate. Graduated with a degree in philosophy. Then I had a three year brush with the law. (Law school.) I didn't find the law to my liking, so shifted career paths over to one of my true loves - - - teaching.
Taught computers in elementary and junior high school for about four years. Then quit teaching to develop educational software full time.
While doing the software thing I did quite a bit of freelance writing about educational technology. Wrote for some Scholastic publications, Quality Computer's "Enhance," and a few other publications. Did freelance writing work for Apple Computer.
Between 1999 and 2002 I worked for the Arlington Public Schools as an Instructional Technology Coordinator at two elementary schools. My job involved keeping the Macintosh computers happy and the kindergarten kids giggling.
I remain a deep believer in the power of public libraries. If you're not sure why public libraries are the best thing around, check out, "12 Ways Libraries are Good for Our Country." as well as, "Community Content in Public Libraries."
I sometimes find it hard to keep track of the new material I've been adding to this web page. (A friend of mine mentioned that she couldn't easily find something I recently added to this page.) I think it's real good for busy web pages to have a section near the top of the page for recent additions. This "recent additions" section should be in addition to the regular organized hierarchy for the page. (i.e. I will deduct points if something is linked to from the "recent additions" part of a page, and is not referenced elsewhere on a web page.)
Community volunteering; writing; user groups; the freenet movement; playing guitar; spending time with children and computers; going to the library; spending time with friends; thinking about things; hearing from others who have been thinking about things; working on collaborative projects; reading TidBits; downloading files with intriguing descriptions; meeting people of shared interest, answering e-mail.
You can listen to some of these stories as mp3 files on my SimpleNet web site.
These essays have been recently collected together into an anthology, which is currently being self-published. Click here to read some excerpts from these essays.

From time to time I enjoy lending help to students who are working on school reports using the Internet. To increase your chances of getting an answer from me, please do make sure: 1) Your question is an exciting, original question and is specific enough to be answered in a few sentences. 2) Your question is so interesting that it can distract me from the other work I do. 3) The question is on a topic that I have a deeply passionate interest in.
If I don't answer email from students, it means that I'm either too busy or your question is not interesting enough. (Sorry!). I'm usually pretty good about answering email regarding the Community Technology Centers' Network (CTCNet), the national nonprofit organization I work for.
Sending me Instant Messages on America Online is not a good idea at any time (unless you're one of my nieces, nephews, siblings, cousins, parents, close friends, or a Ricochet modem samples managers).
