Homepages
Homepages, homepages, homepages . . . For some reason, I love homepages.
Now, don't get me wrong. I like commercial sites, too, and I think the web has a ton of useful information spots that I'd hate to live without. But there's a certain magic about a well-done homepage, a random glimpse into someone's life.
Of course, the key is "well-done". There are a lot of homepages that tell no stories, provide no interest, educate in no way. (I am devoutly hoping that this one that you are looking at is not in that (those?) categories.)
On this page, I'm presenting ways to cut down the dreck while surfing homepages.
Collections of Homepages
One way to cut down the noise-to-sound ratio is to peruse collections of homepages. Some of the best that I've found have been collections of women's homepages. (I still mourn the loss of the original Web Weavers page, collected by the estimable Sage (and speaking of which -- is Sage gone entirely???? This link doesn't work anymore).) Thankfully, we still have a very nice collection at fem|mass. As they say, no commercial sites and no fluff.
Individual Homepages
These are individual homepages that I've enjoyed surfing into. The reason they're not on my nepotism page is because, even under the loose definition the internet fosters, I can't really call these people friends. But stop by and take a look anyway . . . they all seem nice enough!
- Julie has an interesting homepage. It was an earlier manifestation that really pushed me towards thinking about what I want to do with a web page, and what it means to have a web page. (No snide comments along the lines of "and this is it?" from the peanut gallery, thank you!) I will admit that the current manifestation would not have had the same effect on me. That's okay. It's someone else's turn. {smile}
- Alan is another cool websmith, whom I found via Julie's page. His "magnetic poetry" page is fun to play with, but don't miss his ruminations, as well.
- If it's possible to have a cybercrush based solely on intense respect and admiration for HTML ability, I got one bad for Derek Powazek. He is the creator of the fray, which has provided a forum for some of the best HTML work I've seen -- utilizing a wide range of codes, but never losing track of the fact that the point of web pages is to communicate. I fell for him when I first saw his old homepage, where he had delightful art (he has, as always seems to happen, revised his homepage, and now has a new format and new (and old) delights), and I was a goner from my first sight of the fray. His coding does not act as decoration to his meaning, but enhances it.
- This is sort of a semi-homepage. Flat Earth Society, a web site for Thomas Dolby (you know -- the "She Blinded Me With Science" guy?) is, I think, really, really sharp.
- Mark Thomas -- an intriguing individual. He's created sort of a web noir, I think.
