That afternoon we walked down through Tamel to Durbar Square, the big temple-filled square in front of the old royal palace (the new palace is more on the edge of town, with enormous grounds surrounded by a high wall). Other than a few small temples on the walk, we'd not seen any temples before, and Durbar Square was full of them, all with their steps leading up to the sanctorum, where there are platforms all the way around the temple, full of tourists and Nepalis sitting around relaxing and watching us on the ground. The temples all have three or four roofs, like a pagoda (I guess that they are, in fact, pagodas).
