Cooking on House Deck

Cooker will be cleaned by owner for summer in May or June period before each summer. The outdoor on deck cooker uses briquettes. There may be a bag full at at house, but no guarantee. Cleaning brushes & scrapers are provided.

First things to do when getting into home:

Fishing

Last summer in August, several boaters and myself on dock tried to catch the LARGE carp that was terrorizing the dock area of small fish. He was chasing them into the grasses on the shore and making big jumps out of the shallow water to catch them. I tossed several small mouth bass plugs at his head without any luck. Licenses are available at the fishing tackle store on Route 219, or boat over as we did and tie up at their dock.

Swimming

There are many places in the common area to swim. You do need swim shoes however as there is no real sandy beach area. There is a change & bathroom house in the common area next to lake. There is a beach at close by state park on lake.

Shopping/Dining by Boat

Boat Launching

Launching at State Park ramp is only a mile or so away from Swanton house via road. Entering park is $1.00 ( honor system at off summer time of year). Launching is $2.00 more , also on honor system. There is two ramps with double width each, three docks to support them, or 4 launching areas. Directions from the ramp to the #15 dock that is for the Glenfield homes Turn left out of ramp and aim toward bridge. No, not the bridge to the right, that's the 219 bridge you went over getting into town! Go under bridge to the left and stay left. The first point on left after bridge is in Beckman's peninsular. When you get to the point, stay left again. In that cove, the long set of docks on the right side is where our #15 is. Slot #15 is between posted #14 & #15.

Boat Renting

Boat Gas

--Wherever there is renting, there is likely gas to buy for a boat. Our new boat gets its two stroke oil from inside the boat; so what I don't know is can you get regular car gas as I need on the lake. I have been told yes that it ( all boat rental places)  available on lake.

Keeping Cool on Hot day in house

Arrival Time

Please follow our instructions sent to you about the key. Its likely the key may be sent to you with the contract. You are to leave the key in the house upon leaving rental unit. No worry, we have a copy in several, places!

Linens & Blankets---All blankets, towels & bed linens are provided for in house. Linens are done once a week. If you need more clean towels, there is a washer in house. Laundry soap is not promised! If there is a good reason to get extra linens during a week stay, they are stored in a locked box in house that a local cleaner or friendly neighbor of ours can get to.

Towels--We provide a full set of towels for inside the house use only. You should expect to bring your own towels for boat & swim use. Any excess stains or anything else that renders a towel unusable for next renters may be replaced at your expense. If it can be washed to out or problem area cleaned with light bleach, its likely OK.

During the summer Sat. to Sat rentals only

The old renters ( renters leaving) must move out on time so our cleaner has time to clean up & wash the linens before the next renters arrive. Its out at 10AM & in at 3PM. Our cleaner will be giving you the evil eye if you are not out by 10AM. If there is a real problem, call me collect at 301-8054274.

How far is the lake ( most asked question!)

We checked. Its a 5 minute walk to swim & bath house area. That was with a 5 yr. old in tow! It's another 1 &3/4 minutes to dock from that parking/bath house/swim area. That time was carrying a 5 gallon can of gas for the boat also!

Common area next to Lake & Boat Docks

There is a large parking area. Change house & bathroom. One side is men's & other of course is woman's. There is a light, potty, sink & some times toilet paper. Yes you might want to roll your own to be sure.

The treed area on way to boat dock #15 has a pavilion to sit.

The picnic table for some reason is still next to dock area about 40 feet from pavillion. and several trash buckets.

We swim with beach shoes ( no real sandy area) straight out from parking area or from docks.

You might want to keep the contract with you as someone may ask you if you live in the development. There should be no problem as we rented last year and have been cleared with association.

You must behave yourselves however! One of the association board members whom we are friends with ( and on Internet) lives two houses away. I do get reports. Some people set up volleyball net just off parking area on grass.

Starting summer 99 there is a car pass ( Glenfield Association) to hang on your rear view mirror. It should be in house by summer rental time.

Docks are usually put back in for summer operation in mid-April.

WHERE IS YOUR DOCK #15

The community area is to the bottom of the hill you drove up from and down the short road to the right. If you face the toilet/change house, to the left is a path into the woods. It leads to docks on the right side. There are 10 or more docks, which are numbered.

If you were boating over from the State Park via boat, go toward the bridge on your left, out from the park launching area. Go under the bridge and go in to the first cove on the left, that is where your dock is. In the cove, its on the right side.

The boat docks should be out by Mid-April for 1999 Summer.

Videos in House

Separate List of videos is provided. There may be 2 or 3 movies on one VHS tape copied from BlockBusters! There are _____ VHS cartridges as of Feb 99.

Another Visit to Our House Please call or e-mail for help.

Heat & Pellet Stove

There is separate instructions left in house for operating the pellet stoves. There is one on mid level and one in the basement. The prime heat source for the house is the gas furnace. There is an in ground buried tank that supplies the gas for the furnace that is in a separate room behind the garage. The living room area control for the furnace also has a selection where the FAN ONLY can be used. One trick I use is putting on the lower pellet stove with the house circulation fan only on (as above). This makes the basement warm and rest of house warm if you run the lower stove full up in the winter. DO NOT MONKEY with the living room pellet stoves draft! Leave the draft cable & knob seen inside the control area door alone. It should always be out! One 2AM call for smoke in the house because the rental company did not tell the renters there was a gas furnace as the prime heat source, was enough! The rental company sent someone out at 2AM at our expense! They had turned every knob and pulled every cable they could find I guess! So much for instructions. I usually take several hand full of pellets from the rear hopper and put them on/in the fake ceramic logs in front. Then squirt a little starter fluid ( usually provided and stored on the mantel out of reach of little hands) on the pile of pellets. Light fluid, let burn short time with door open. Close door and go to controls ( you likely opened control door and read labels already) and perform the start up procedure. The fan & feeder must be on. Sometimes you can let the feeder make a pile of pellets to put fluid on. See direction provided in house next to both stoves. The lower stove does not have a damper to MONKEY with. We usually provide bags of pellets in the garage for the winter & sometimes summer also. It's not guaranteed as part of the rent, but we try to keep up. The hardware store and Agway's in Oakland sell them. Think hardware store is 5$ per bag & Agway is 4.50$ ?

Doors Do not walk through closed screen doors! Watch your children and their treatment of the door screening and track please.

House Alarm System

Alarm will chirp when most doors are opened. Keeps track of children in & out! If smoke detector goes off, house central alarm senses tone/note and will also tell you FIRE-GET OUT or some such message. The only way to shut off I have found is by disconnecting battery in closet in wash room! The shut off code is however written on the alarm box just in from rear door to house.

House Lights

Follow signs listed on switch plates. Renters usually leave outside lights on because they flip all the switches in house till what they want comes on! The outside lights will not show in daytime when on from inside.

TVs

All 3 TVs are on cable. The little TV in the kitchen can be moved to the bedroom, as there is a wall jack, but please return it to the kitchen before leaving.

Locks

One key fits both locks. I also have an emergency key stored with two friendly neighbors only two houses away! Call me to get release in an emergency. There are 3 closet doors and one linen spare box that are for the owners use only and are kept locked. The box in the hall closet has extra linen that the cleaning staff can get to during cleaning or emergency.

Washing Machine & Dryer

You are provided clean linen for the week or weekend you are there. If for any reason there is a problem on arrival or other, please call collect. You are expected to use the washing machine to wash any towels or linens you need while there.

Map of Lake

There is an electronic version linked to web site and free maps easily found in house and local stores.

Water & Sewer Use

The water comes from a well & sewage goes to local treatment plant. Please NO diapers or other unusual stuff down toilet or sink! There is a chopper just outside the garage area. When it gets plugged a flashing red light goes on outside next to garage. You can call the sewage company at ________________. Its very unusual. They will of course tell me what was plugging the chopper! The hot water circuit breaker will likely be off when you come in during the winter period. You should throw the two circuit breakers in the garage electrical box on the garage wall when you arrive and off when you leave. In summer its likely another party of renters will be in a few hours after you leave (after cleaning lady is out) and No switching need be done.

Spares (Light Bulbs & such)

We keep some in our locked closets. The cleaning lady may be able to come over and replace what ever is your need. Most all the TV clicker batteries and smoke batteries have been replaced in the last 6 months.

Maintenance

Call us collect . at 301-8054274. Summer vacationers will be given a work # to call also for us.

Coffee Filters & Toilet Paper

We left out a box of coffee filters that we hope makes it into summer of 99.

Deposit

Your deposit check will be returned as soon as we get the green light from the cleaning person. We usually hold check for return and not cash it unless there is excess damage or cleaning.

Policy on Renting to young singles groups

We do NOT rent to groups of students or other similar groups. Its not that we do not like students, but no one becomes responsible if damage occurs. Students become hard to find and We have on occasion rented to a group of professional singles. We had the place trashed over New Years once, by a two family party rented to by ta real-estate company ! We have become very skittish since then. They were drunk & disorderly and broke things all over the house. They had a dog in the house that decided the stairway would be a good place to sleep & bathroom. We DO NOT ALLOW DOGS for just this reason. You will be hit in your deposit for damages. The house stairs back to its sweet smell self after a lot of work!

No Dogs Allowed in House

We are working on finding a local kennel or way to board your dog during a summer vacation. It will be only advice.

Need Help

Games

House has several games to play in the lower level. There is an SES Nintendo three (3) games. There is a deck of cards, but we do not check the number remaining in the deck each rental!

Ping Pong

Table is stored in the garage folded up. Most play in garage in warm weather. The net is starting to take a beating, but not from the balls! The table has a small ripple crack on end where it looks like someone tried to sit on it!!! A NO NO, its only pressed wood fiber. It seems to be OK for play. It may get better reinforced table when present one dies. I actually have it in home garage ready to go. Several balls were provided a beginning of season. There are two more spares in wash room closet. The cleaning lady has a key to closet with a few more. If you have to buy let us know for reimbursement based on leaving them for next renters.

The ping pong table must be left out of the way for the next renters car to be able to get into garage.

Snow

We usually only plow driveway when we know its rented. You might be at the house when a snowstorm occurs requiring extra plowing. I am in for the expense. Either call me so I can order or contact party listed here and I will reimburse as they are known to me for cost & ability. TRIPP at: 301-3991955 pager or 301-3877633 home phone. He plows the streets in the Glenfield development and usually can be hailed for plow as he does our street! 2nd choice is Seth Folicman who lives close by to Glenfield and can be contacted via Seths Storage in area on 219. He is at: 301-3877007 . There is plowing of the streets in the community by a contract plowing company.
