Notes

The following is taken from a letter to the editor, probably The Washington Post, date unknown, signed by "Elmer Louis Kayser, Historian, The George Washington University, Washington."

"On the very interesting article about a portrait of Judge William Cranch recently restored and hung in the courtroom of Chief Judge Matthew F. McGuire of the United States District Court:

"The painter, John Cranch (1807-1891), of whom the article said no record could be found, was the son of Judge Cranch and an associate of the National Academy. John Cranch was a native of Washington and a portrait painter of considerable ability. Judge Cranch, among his many distinctions, was the first Professor of Law in the Columbian College, now The George Washington University. Three of his sons, including the artist John Cranch, and his son-in-law, William Greenleaf Eliot (the grandfather of T. S. Eliot), were graduates of Columbian College."
