At times mail order is the only way to get hold of some of the albums talked about in r.m.n. This is just a short list of those sources regularly recommended.

THE ARTIST SHOP
Welcome to The Artist Shop, a music store dedicated to the independent artist putting out his/her own product. The items we display we buy directly from the artist or his/her own company. When you buy from these artists you can take pride in the knowledge that more of your money is going directly to the artist.
Originally known as Audionet this is the 90's version of the old listening booth! Entire albums are available in RealAudio format, including a fair number of contemporary instrumental and jazz offerings. Point your browser here and look for the jukebox...
CDNOW and CDEUROPE
Probably the best known on-line mail order companies. As well as a comprehensive range of all types of music they have a search facility that's easy to use and often contains quite a bit of info about both albums and artist.
CHEAP OR WHAT CDs
The name says it all really! A good general source based in the UK.
COMPACT DISC SERVICES
CD Services mail order serves people worldwide with a data system that allows you instant price and availability info to over 500,000 CD's and CD singles worldwide. They also have limited info on vinyl and music video releases. Most importantly they have a range of catalogues containing hundreds of reviews making them collectors items in their own right.
I'll let Andy G explain more...
"Dave and myself write and compile catalogues and regular supplements in the musical areas of Euro-rock, Ambient/Trance, Canterbury (Gong, Caravan, Soft Machine, etc), Hawkwind and psychedelia, Industrial (from electronic to metal), King Crimson and associates, The Ultimate Guitar Music Catalogue (a showcase for instrumental and vocal guitar talents, known and unknown), Heavenly Vocals (devoted entirely to female vocals in music from country and folk through electronic and industrial to rock and indie), plus a monthly General Catalogue covering new music in the above specialist areas as well as a wide range of music without a catalogue of its own (USA indie, AOR, New Country, Blues, Folk, Metal) and more."
"Dave does the majority of the specilaist synth and prog catalogues, with contributions from me. All the catalogues are complete with most items actually reviewed so you know what sort of music you are getting. If we don't genuinely like it, we don't include it."
"We may not be able to tell you that a particular drummer played a particular uncredited role on someone's obscure album, but we can guide you towards some incredible music by artists and groups of whom you've never heard, especially once we know what you are into, since our main aim is to feature artists and groups in all these musical fields from around the world who are unsigned or not distributed decently in the UK. "
They listen to everything sent and reply to everyone who sends music to them. To take full advantage, contact Dave or Andy G at

For a free catalog of electronic music, including artists such as Steve Roach, Mark Dwane, Neuronium and many others, send your snail-mail address to Coriolis@ix.netcom.com
The first U.S. mailorder company specifically devoted to importing progressive and electronic music from Europe. Now into it's 24th year, their bi-monthly catalogs promote some of the best new and reissued electronic space music and progressive rock around. Not a mass marketing company, it's motto is "quality, not quantity."
PLANET EARTH MUSIC
As well as being a retailer Steve (Edge) Ryals' Planet Earth Music is about "bringing music that I am passionate about onto the planetary stage of the Internet." He has been reviewing music for magazines such as Magical Blend and The New Age Retailer, for almost four years now. Mostly, they were originally written for store owners and music buyers, to help them decide what to stock in their stores but they are now available at his web site.
SYNTH MUSIC DIRECT
Contains more reviews of electronic music albums than any other page on the net (unless you know otherwise, then let them know). Carries a lot of european e-music and new age stuff which is very hard or expensive to buy in USA and outside of Europe. Their pricing is quite reasonable compared to cdeurope and, best of all, their service is quick.

Here you can listen to up to five tracks of 30-second sound samples from over 40,000 albums including a number of the better known new age/contemporary artists. A good search engine helps you along and if you like what you hear, you can order them right there.
