Function and Organization of the NCSP

Q1. What is the NCSP?
The NCSP is a network linking individuals and organizations with interests and concerns about science, particularly the support, funding, direction and future of science, the career development of scientists and the impact of these factors on the economic, social and medical well-being of society.

Q2. What does the NCSP do for science?
The NCSP establishes a uniting presence on the Internet for those with concerns and interests about science. This presence helps alert others about issues affecting the progress of science and the repercussions of these issues on the economic, social and medical well-being of society.

Q3. What can linking to the NCSP do for the individual or organization?
Linking to the NCSP helps bring interested visitors to web sites of those linked up and facilitates contact with other like minded people and organizations.

Q4. Who runs the NCSP?
Just as no single individual or organization runs the internet no single individual or organization runs the NCSP. Rather the NCSP is a self-maintaining force of its own that utilizes the internet to encourage and promote individual expression among its members.

Q5. Does the NCSF espouse any particular views or doctrines about science?
Linking up with the NCSP signifies awareness, acknowledgement and support of other like efforts by individuals and organizations with conerns about the support and future of science. However, there is no particular dogma about the specific details of these concerns. Just as freedom of speech and individual expression are basic tenets of democratic society the same principals apply to those linked to the NCSP.

Q6. Who can link up to the NCSP?
Any individual, group or organization with a site or page on the Web can link to the NCSP. This is not restricted to science professionals or members of specific nations but is open to any individual, group or organization with interests and concerns about science.

Q7. Does it cost anything to link up to the NCSP?
It costs nothing apart from a little time to establish the necessary links and help others who may wish to link up through your web site.

Q8. How does an individual or organization link up to the NCSP?
An individual or organization may link up to the NCSP either by invitation or solicitation of an existing member.

Q9. What is the mechanism of linking?
The mechanism of linking involves placement of button icons (i.e., those at the bottom and top of this page) on a web page and linking these buttons to other web sites.

Q10. How are links established?
Links are established when an existing member puts in a link to a web site of a new member and the new member puts in a link to the site previously linked to by the first member (this requires communication of correct URL's between the two members). Other links are established at the discretion of the web master of the new site.

Q11. What are the rules for linking?
There are no hard and fast rules about linking, this is a matter of common sense. New links may be established to sites not linked up, but the web master of the other site should be contacted and informed of the link and invited to link up. Links to sites that are not linked up or are unlikely to link up should be minimized to avoid deadends. The position of the NCSP icon on each page is at the discretion of the web-master. However, each site should ideally include one information button icon (that marked with the "i") that links to an information page (e.g., this page). The webmaster is free to make a copy of this information page.

Q12. How does one obtain the NCSP random link button?
The NCSP random link button can be downloaded from source or by anonymous FTP.
