GRAEME AND KATHY'S GALLERY OF UNDERWATER MAMMALS

Dolphins and Porpoises

Dolphins
Galapagos Archipelago, May 1994.

The dolphins were part of a large pod - they kept coming and coming and coming, but didn't stop to play. Then out of the blue amongst them appeared two Galapagos sharks. At that stage, it was time for us snorkel divers to clear the water.

More Dolphins from the same Pod
Galapagos Archipelago, May 1994.

Most often when encountered dolphins and porpoises in the wild tend to be aloof and only vaguely interested in the diver nearby. The members of this pod were no exception.

Sometimes, however, an encounter can involve a more friendly and interested approach as Kathy and I have experienced together once off North Carolina when we were surrounded by a pod of spotted Atlantic dolphins. Dolphins or porpoises that have had previous contact with humans may also prove more friendly.

Sealions and fur seals

Juvenile Sealions at Play
Bartolome, Galapagos Archipelago, May 1994.

The juvenile Sealions were very playful and wonderful to watch underwater. Amongst the rock pools they'd sidle right up to you and lay their heads down by your feet. In the water it was clear that they were having loads of fun.

Fur seal
Wolf island, Galapagos Archipelago, May 1994.

The fur seals were not quite as playful as the sealions. Nevertheless, the provided an interesting interlude at the end of our dives at Wolf island during our safety stops.
