TUTORIALS
- How to Conduct
Legal Research On-Line for Free(July 2001)
Note: currently, this tutorial is only viewable in
Netscape Navigator 4.73 and up.
This tutorial provides a step by step guide for non-lawyers on how to perform legal research
on-line for free. The tutorial also explains the building blocks of what makes the law,
i.e., statutes, regulations and judicial decisions and how to locate these primary resources.
The tutorial also identifies secondary resources, such as articles or websites which provide
information or answer legal questions. This tutorial is perfect for anyone who wants to learn
more about law, for individuals who may have a legal problem and want to obtain background
information before consulting an attorney or for people already represented by a lawyer who
simply want to understand more about their case. Special section of the tutorial contains
links to D.C., Virginia and Maryland resources.
- Appellate Tutorial
(January 1998)
Our appellate tutorial explains the procedure for filing an appeal at the United States
Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The tutorial contains actual documents and references
and links to the Federal Rules of Appellate Practice and the DC Circuit local rules. The
tutorial also contains our firm's winning motion for recovery of attorneys' fees under the
Equal Access to Justice Act.
- A Practitioner's Guide
to Energy Related Legal Resources on the Internet(November 1997)
This tutorial is based on our firm's presentation to the DC Bar on how to locate legal resources
of interest to those in the energy field. The tutorial (which was based on an earlier one
presented in 1996) was one of the first ever presented to lawyers on on-line resources and as
such, some of the information provided and links included may be outdated. Nevertheless,
the advice provided in the tutorial on research tips remains useful even several years later.
