Chesapeake World

  East of Annapolis and west of St. Michaels, the Chesapeake Bay stretches for about 206 miles (332 kilometers) from Virginia Beach, Va., to Havre de Grace, Md., at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Its waters cover approximately 4,400 square miles (11,400 sq. km); its watershed drains a region of 64,000 square miles (165,800 sq. km), reaching far into New York state and west into the Appalachian Mountains.
  Think of this mighty estuary as a kind of "sub-ocean" connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Ships from its ports ply the seven seas; fish and shellfish from its waters are famous throughout the land: its beauty has inspired musicians and other artists; its shores are home to one of the world's fastest-growing populations, drawn by the sheer delight of living near such an inland sea.   This humble web page seeks only to provide an entrée to the Bay and its region; thousands of other web sites offer comprehensive access to regional activities.
