Arun Valley in Eastern Nepal

This photo from a helicopter over the Arun Valley in Eastern Nepal shows the well managed fields of Nepali farmers. Tod Ragsdale participated in negotiations, in writing the terms of reference for, and in supervision of, the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation survey of the social and cultural impacts of the proposed Arun III Hydro Electric Project. The survey resulted in an action plan for protecting the social, cultural, and natural resources of the valley. Ragsdale also led a team of Nepalese and expatriate experts preparing a watershed management plan for upstream of the World Bank financed Marsyangdi Hydro Power Station in Mid West Nepal, an area where he had previously conducted Ph.D. dissertation ethnographic fieldwork. Al Picardi has also developed watershed management plans in India (Upper Indravati), Vietnam and Indonesia for protection of hydro power reservoirs from siltation caused by the degredation of natural resources in the upland areas.
