
Many households chose to buy land to replace what they had lost to reservoir submersion and, to achieve this purpose, added their economic rehabilitation scheme grant to what they had received in land compensation under the Land Acquisition Act. The households that chose this option banded together to purchase the land and to work to improve it. Many of the wealthy land-owning households in the area sold most, or all, of their land to pursue urban opportunities in a nearby fast-growing city. In some respects the availability of willing buyers with cash in hand was an opportunity many of the wealthier land-owning families saw as a new opportunity to invest in urban pursuits.
