Can you spot the differences between being a Systems Administrator
and being a parent?
Sometimes, when you're sleep deprived, it's hard to tell who you are, what
you are doing, and how you got there in the first place. Here's a handy
guide to help you figure out which you are.
- It is 2am. It hollers. You wake up, bleary eyed.
- It continues to holler. You diaper|nurse the wrong end, or
log in to the wrong host.
- It screams some more. You try something else.
- It screams some more. You try something else.
- It stops screaming. You have absolutely no idea if what you did had any effect. You go back to sleep.
- repeat again in 2 hours.
Later, after some practice and some trained self-automation procedures...
Formulate the proper response:
A: "I NEEEEED A ninja turtle action figure!!!!
B: "I NEEEEED emacs v.21.35.72!!!!
A: "I need cookies for a class party today. "
B: "This box needs to be patched and all apps installed for a 9:30 am demo today."
Final result:
A: It's out of the house and off to college! Party!
B: It's up. It's running. It's entirely automated! I can kick back,
read usenet all day long, and no one will notice. Time to look for another job.
