Deep Sky objects observed with binoculars

Cool day/night line

Here are my observations of the deep sky objects made with my binoculars. All of the objects listed below came from a list from the Astronomical League Binocular Deep Sky club. Unless otherwise noted, all of the below observations were made with Orion 16x80 binoculars.

Deep Sky objects observed with binoculars
Object Con Mag Date Time Location Seeing Notes
NGC 129 Cas 6.5 1998-08-29 0035 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. A small and roughly circular cluster. I could see about 4 stars.
NGC 253 Scl 8.0

NGC 457 Cas 6.4 1998-08-29 0045 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. It looked like a comet tail with a star as the comet head. Averted vision shows some additional stars.
NGC 663 Cas 7.1 1998-08-29 0100 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. A nice sized cluster that appears rectangular. It has plenty of stars and some fuzziness.
Cr 463 Cas 5.7 1999-08-03 2235 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very nice evening, with steady seeing and transparency of 6.1 Lovely OC. Could count about 10 bright stars and more of dimmer stars. There's a pattern of bright stars that looks like a dolphin.
NGC 752 And 5.7 1998-10-11 2235 EDT Savage Farm, VA Fairly transparent, with good seeing and little bit chilly (~50 degrees or so). A lovely loose open cluster. It looks like there are 2 'shells' of stars with a gap between the 'shells'. It's not really circular, more like irregular.
Stock 2 Cas 4.4 1998-1011 2310 EDT Savage Farm, VA Fairly transparent, with good seeing and little bit chilly (~50 degrees or so). A nice open cluster that is very evenly bright (no star brighter than others), and look like a champagne glass!
2003-03-29 20:40 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. A lovely "fine" OC, roughly evenly spaced.
NGC 869 Per 5.3 1998-08-22 0055 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and very warm, implying high humidity. Seeing is reasonable, about 6.0. Part of Double Cluster. A beautiful open cluster. I can also make it out visually.
NGC 884 Per 6.1 1998-08-22 0055 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and very warm, implying high humidity. Seeing is reasonable, about 6.0. Part of Double Cluster. Another beautiful open cluster, a tad bit dimmer than its brighter sister; I could also make it out, but not as well as the brighter cluster.
Mark 6 Cas 7.1 2003-03-29 20:50 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. Looked like a curved comet. It also looked like a dolphin.
Mel 15 Cas 6.5 1998-10-11 2320 EDT Savage Farm, VA Fairly transparent, with good seeing and little bit chilly (~50 degrees or so). A rather poor open cluster in that there wasn't much to see. With averted vision, could see some more stars.
Tr 2 Per 5.9 2003-03-29 20:30 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. A lovely OC. Could see 3 stars in a row (not the brighter 3 stars west of Tr 2)
Tr 3 Cas 7.0 2003-03-29 21:05 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. A nice small OC. Could count about 5 to 7 stars.
Stock 23 Cam 6.2 2003-03-29 21:10 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. This object is called "Pazmino's Cluster" and is a pretty nice small OC with a tiny row of 3 stars going northwest. This make it look like a fish.
Mel 20 Per 1.2 2003-03-29 22:00 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. Lovely view of stars as well as a "sickle" around Alpha Per.
NGC 1342 Per 6.7

Kembe 1 Cam 4.0 2003-03-29 22:05 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. A nice view of 3 bright stars. Having said that, when I first looked at this object, I was going by the Star Atlas 2000.0 by Tirion and Sinnott, which didn't label the arrangment. Hence what I thought was Kemble 1 was actually the 3 bright stars somewhat embedded in the actual arrangement. This arrangement is a line of dimmer stars in almost perfect line. So I'm going to reobserve this at the next opportunity. By the way, the name of this is Kemble's Cascade. And in case you were wondering who is Kemble, his name was Lucian Kemble and he was an astronomy enthusiat.
NGC 1528 Per 6.4 2003-03-29 22:15 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Cold but calm. Temperature went from about 40 degrees to low 30s. Fairly transparent. Fan shape. Could resolve about 10 stars or so with averted vision.
Mel 25 Tau 0.5 1999-03-d16 2135 EST Mickey Gordon Park, VA Clear and chilly, (~40s) with quite good transparencies and steady seeing (~5.5-6.0). The Hyades were quite beautiful with their bright bluish stars!
NGC 1582 Per 7.0

NGC 1647 Tau 6.4 2003-04-25 21:20 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. This looks like a fine but sparse OC--quite nice to see.
NGC 1662 Ori 6.4

NGC 1746 Tau 6.1 2003-04-25 21:25 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. A pretty OC. Could make out fainter stars within the OC with averted vision.
NGC 1807 Tau 7.0 2003-04-25 21:15 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. NGC 1807 is right next to NGC 1817 and it appears to be a bit brighter than its neighbor.
NGC 1817 Tau 7.7 2003-04-25 21:15 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. NGC 1817 is right next to NGC 1807 and it appears to be a bit dimmer than its neighbor.
NGC 1893 Aur 7.5 2003-04-25 21:45 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. This was a somewhat faint OC that is best observed with averted vision. I could see a row of 4 stars in the middle of the cluster.
NGC 1907 Aur 8.2 2003-04-25 21:50 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. This is one interesting looking OC. It looks like a bird footstep or the peace symbol without the encircling circle (if you look at it in the right oriention anyway).
NGC 1981 Ori 4.2 2003-02-01 20:00 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear, cool, limiting magnitude around 5.5 to 6.0 (Tau). Quite transparent. Lovely loose open cluster. Counted about 9 stars, maybe more.
NGC 2169 Ori 5.9 2003-04-25 22:10 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. A small OC that looks like nebula at first. Direct vision shows 2 or 3 stars with few more from averted vision.
NGC 2232 Mon 3.9 2003-02-01 20:30 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear, cool, limiting magnitude around 5.5 to 6.0 (Tau). Quite transparent. Bluish open cluster with "arrow" and a pattern that look like a bird.
NGC 2244 Mon 4.8 2003-04-25 22:25 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. This is a loose OC with "anchor" stars in 2 rows of 3 stars each.
NGC 2251 Mon 7.3 2003-04-25 22:30 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. A pretty faint OC--it look more like a cloud than a OC, in that there wasn't much granularity in the cluster.
NGC 2264 Mon 3.9 2003-04-25 22:50 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. It appears like a cone--There is a reference to this cluster as "Cone Nebula", but I can't find it at the moment...
NGC 2281 Aur 5.4 2003-04-25 23:20 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear with a bit of haze. Pretty windy though. A nice OC that has some varieties in star brightness. With averted vision, could see a "block" of stars in the middle.
NGC 2301 Mon 6.0

NGC 2343 Mon 6.7 2003-02-01 21:35 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear, cool, limiting magnitude around 5.5 to 6.0 (Tau). Quite transparent. Nice fan-shaped OC. Could count about 5 stars with averted vision and some fainter stars blurred together.
NGC 2360 CMa 7.2 2003-02-01 21:45 CST Canyon of the Eagles, TX Clear, cool, limiting magnitude around 5.5 to 6.0 (Tau). Quite transparent. Somewhat fan-shaped. Looks like nebula with direct view, but was able to resolve some stars with averted vision.
NGC 2403 Cam 8.4

NGC 2527 Pup 6.5

NGC 2539 Pup 6.5

NGC 2571 Pup 7.0

Mel 111 Com 1.8 1999-06-04 2325 EDT Savage Farm, VA Fairly clear and good transparencies (~5.5 or so). A bit chilly. A cluster of bright blue stars, easily visible with naked eyes. Lovely sight!
IC 4665 Oph 4.2 1998-08-21 2330 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and very warm, implying high humidity. Seeing is reasonable, about 6.0. A nice and bright open cluster--I came across while I was searching for some 'guide' stars--I was way off, but only because of the clouds that persistly block off one side of Oph, thus making it hard to figure out where the heck I was looking at.
NGC 6520 Sgr 7.6 1998-08-28 2220 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. Appears to be a linear smudge and looks little bit like a out-of-focused galaxy.
NGC 6633 Oph 4.6 1998-08-28 2235 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. A rather irregular cluster.
IC 4756 Ser 4.6 1998-08-28 2245 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. Big and very fine cluster (fine in that there are a lot of tiny stars).
NGC 6709 Aql 6.7 1998-08-28 2250 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. A fuzzy but nice cluster. I could make out 3 or 4 individual stars with averted vision.
NGC 6716 Sgr 7.5 1998-08-28 2310 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. Only with averted vision could I see anything, which is a small and irregular cluster.
Cr 399 Vul 3.6 1998-08-28 2335 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. Believe it or not, I had some trouble finding this Coathanger Cluster, because I kept going off on the wrong track from some guide stars. I could make out about 10 bright stars and a dim star.
NGC 6819 Cyg 7.3

NGC 6823 Vul 7.1 1998-08-28 2350 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and rather warm, with seeing being reasonable, about 5.5. A faint cluster. There appear to be some fuzziness in the center and a couple of lines of stars leading away from the cluster.
NGC 6910 Cyg 7.4 1999-07-17 2320 EDT Savage Farm, VA Rather nice evening, temperature was about 70 to 75 degrees with limit magnitude of about 5.5 to 5.7. It was a rather loose cluster. 4 bright stars serves as "corner" stars of the roughly trapezoid cluster
NGC 6934 Del 8.7 1998-10-10 2150 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very transparent and decent seeing, but pretty windy. A faint smudge that seems right next to a star, giving it a comet-like appearance.
NGC 6940 Vul 6.3

NGC 7063 Cyg 7.0

NGC 7160 Cep 6.1 1999-08-03 2300 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very nice evening, with steady seeing and transparency of 6.1 A very small OC surrounding a star. Either that or it was the "cluster" of stars over 3 degrees wide.
NGC 7209 Lac 7.7 1999-08-03 2325 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very nice evening, with steady seeing and transparency of 6.1 Rather dim OC. Needed averted vision to see it. Fine stars, evenly distributed. Looks like a kidney bean.
NGC 7235 Cep 7.7 1999-08-06 2220 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very nice, 70-75 degrees, a bit breezy A very small OC. Looks like a star but with some fuzziness to the south more or less.
NGC 7243 Lac 6.4 1999-08-03 2310 EDT Savage Farm, VA Very nice evening, with steady seeing and transparency of 6.1 Beautiful OC, about 1 degree wide. 8 bright stars.
NGC 7789 Cas 6.7 1998-08-21 2330 EDT Savage Farm, VA Partly cloudy and very warm, implying high humidity. Seeing is reasonable, about 6.0. I came across this nice open cluster while I was looking for M52. It appears as a fuzzy object, indicating it was pretty far (am I right anyone?)
