my photo Welcome to Rayvenna's Corner

Rayvenna Information
Work and School

I am the webmaster at Life Technologies, a biotech technology firm in Rockville, Maryland. Just to make sure I stay overworked, I've also enrolled in a graduate program at Hood College in computer science. This semester, I'm taking Operating Systems, my last course.

I graduated from Washington College, class of '96. I majored in English, philosophy, and minored in religion.

Recreation

I'm slowly getting back into a normal lifestyle again... rock climbing, caving, camping, and dancing (anyone looking for a formerly crippled Ballroom dance partner?). One of my classmates is teasing me with the idea of spending time at a local rock climbing gym. It won't be the same, but it's certainly more convenient than the real thing. :)

I'm only a beginning horizontal caver. I've been in the following WV caves (listed in order)

  1. Simmons-Mingo
  2. - can't remember the name of my second cave -
  3. Confluence
  4. Red Run (?-- right across the river from Confluence)
  5. Bowden
    more images of Bowden
B.A.T.S's Bowden pictures (can you tell this is a popular cave?)
  6. My Cave
  7. Blood Cave
  8. Keys Cave
  9. McCoys Mill

In order to insure that caves are there for everyone, I'm a member of (and encourage you to join) the Mid-Atlantic Karst Conservancy, the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, and the West Virginia Cave Conservancy. (Okay, so I can't say no. If they were at OTR, I gave money, but it went for a good cause and, hey, I even got to adopt a Fricks Cave bat I named Quid!)

Other interesting cave and rock climbing links are: PSC's web site, NSS, and Basic Caving Equipment, The Virtual Cave, Seneca Rocks, WV.

Pets

The managerie consists of assorted reptiles and a rabbit. :) Specifically, the loves of my life are:

"The Children"

  • Gizmo: A beautiful, perl gray male angora rabbit who loves to snuggle
  • Shadow: The love of Gizmo's life, a charcoal colored female angora.
  • Phoenix: My newest love. He's a young male iguana I adopted from the Montogomery County Humane Society (where I volunteer). We still have a few battles over who's *really* "Top Iguana" in this family, but overall he's really very sweet.

There's a WHAT on my head?

This picture of Phoenix was taken at the August 1998 Humane Society picnic. He wanted a closeup, so he started walking towards the camera, nearly tipping the hat off my head! Well, I usually win the war of the "Top Iguana." Really I do.

"The Slithers"
  • Paas: A beautiful male albino Texas Rat snake who's pink-and-white coloring reminds me of an Easter egg. At around 4 feet, he's fully grown.
  • Sunshine: A beautifully colored amelenistic corn snake (female). When I got her, she had a few broken ribs. The oldest of my snakes, she's also the smallest (except for Maharet) and perhaps the most gentle. She looks like a brilliantly colored sunset, full of red and orange.

My volunteer work at the Montgomery County Humane Society lets me play with lots of other wonderful animals that (unfortunately) won't fit in my townhouse.
I'm also finding myself spending time at Kehilat Shalom, a local conservative synagogue.
