Henry R. Linden, Ph.D.

In June 1990, Henry Linden was named the Max McGraw Professor of Energy and Power Engineering and Management at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and assumed direction of the activities of IIT's interdisciplinary Energy and Power Center. From July 1989 until June 1990, he served as interim president and chief executive officer of IIT and interim chairman and chief executive officer of its subsidiary, IIT Research Institute. He has been a member of the faculty of IIT since 1954 and served as the Frank W. Gunsaulus Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering following his retirement as president of Gas Research Institute (GRI) in April 1987, until becoming interim president of IIT. Linden was instrumental in the organization of GRI, the U.S. gas industry's cooperative research and development arm. He served as interim president from 1976 to 1977, was elected GRI's first president and a member of its board of directors in 1977, and continues to serve GRI as Executive Advisor and a member of its Advisory Council. From 1947 until GRI went into full operation in 1978, he served the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), then an IIT affiliate, in various management capacities, including four years as president and trustee. In 1965, he organized IGT's wholly-owned subsidiary, Gas Developments Corporation and served on its board of directors and as its chief operating officer and then chief executive officer until 1978.

In addition to his activities in research and education, Dr. Linden serves as a Senior Advisor of the economic and management consulting firm Putnam, Hayes and Bartlett, Inc., and on the boards of directors of The AES Corporation, Proton Energy Systems, Inc., and Centennial Holdings, Inc. (formerly Larimer & Co. -- a manager of venture capital funds). In 1992, he retired from two boards of directors: Reynolds Metals Company after 15 years of service and UGI Corporation after 12 years of service. In 1993, he also completed a six-year term as a member of the Advisory Council of the Electric Power Research Institute and a seven-year term as a member of the Energy Engineering board of the National Research Council. In 1994 he retired from the board of directors of Sonat, Inc. and Sonat's subsidiary, Southern Natural Gas Company after 20 years of service and served as a consultant to the board of Sonat, Inc. until July 1996.

After receiving his B. S. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1944, Linden began his work in the energy field with Mobil Oil Corporation in New York. He received a Master of Chemical Engineering degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic University) in 1947, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1952.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and, in Britain, a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Energy, and is active in numerous other professional and trade organizations. He has served on many federal advisory bodies dealing with energy policy, technology and regulation beginning with the Kennedy Administration and held a Presidential appointment during the Ford Administration. He has written and lectured extensively on U.S. and world energy issues and has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications and 27 patents. Linden has received numerous awards for his technical and analytical work in the fossil fuel area -- most recently the Homer H. Lowry Award for Excellence in Fossil Energy Research from the U. S. Department of Energy in 1991, the 1993 United States Energy Award from the United States Energy Association, and the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award of The Energy Daily. In 1996 he was also inducted into Georgia Tech's Engineering Hall of Fame.
