Monroe Avenue Bridge US 1 Options

The choice to allow dense development in Potomac Yard, calls for increased access to US 1 South. To meet the requirements for the developments on Alexandria side, at least two more lanes are needed, To meet the zoning requirements for high rise densities in Arlington at least four more lanes are need.

Tuesday 18 May CAP and the city will offer their proposals.

Different options have been considered to some degree, Here is what I remember,

This is a satellite view showing what is there now. North is to top.

Old Town is to south,, NECA is on right side, Delray is to left.

The Monroe Avenue bridge is four lanes.

Not show is just south, is where US 1 splits to two, three lane road. These roads allow parking on one side.

THis is often called a "Spine Road Option"

This shows where a four lane 'T' connection is made on to bridge span.

All existing roads remain, as is, but traffic from Slaters lane would lose 'right on red' option. Loss of this will produce new backups on to both Slater Lane and Powhatan Avenue

This is the straightened and widened (eight lane) bridge solution that has been advocated by some in Delray.

Note: existing US 1 to left/west of new bridge goes away. As does our direct connection to all west of US 1.

Right turn on red for North Bound traffic can remain.

This is my thought, grow new bridge from east foot of Monroe Avenue bridge.

Leave existing bridge where it is.

Make 4 way intersection for east / west travel.
