Trash Disposal
- Chapter 5 of the City Code provides the following in regard
to solid waste not in excess of one cubic yard per week (over
that amount has different requirements).
- Approved containers are:
a sturdy metal or heavy plastic container which is water-tight,
equipped with handles and a tight fitting metal or plastic cover,
with a capacity of not less than 15 nor more than 30 gallons.
Total weight cannot exceed 75 pounds.
- A plastic liner at least 39 inches long with a minimum diameter
of 60 inches made of min. 1.7 mil opaque plastic (or a waterproof
paper bag approved by the T&ES director) may be used in the
metal or plastic container.
- The liner (or bag) may be removed from the metal or plastic
container, securely tied and placed at the collection point.
- Trash should not be placed at the collection point sooner
than 5:00 p.m. of the day preceding the regularly scheduled collection
day, and should be returned to their normal storage point not
later than 7:00 p.m. of the collection day. (On collection day,
trash should be out by 6:00 a.m. from May 1 - September 30, and
by 7:00 a.m. from October 1 - April 30.)
- As you can see, the right kind of plastic liner (or bag)
securely tied is OK to be put out. Perhaps some folks are using
a less strong bag -- or the urban critters are adapting. Trash
collection and any related enforcement are the responsibility
of the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services'
Solid Waste Division at 751-5130, so you may want to get their
attention on the matter of people putting trash out too early.
- Others in the neighborhood have raised trash concerns since
we started the community walks. I will share this information
with Tom Witte so he can put something on Northeast's web site,
and I will bring a handout to the April meeting to remind residents
of the requirements.
- Hope this information will be useful to you, and that you
will consider participating in the next community walk ( email
and web pages will post the date).
- Trash Day Parking restrictions:
Car owners should note, there are parking restrictions that can result is ticket and tow,
on the east side Michigan Ave. on Tuesday mornings, so trash
trucks can enter alleys.
Please do us all a favor, check and obey parking signs.
