Here's some of what folks KEPT saying on Internet
about Leftover Salmon in 1996
"looking for a tape of the leftover salmon show at the cubby bear last
friday nite in chicago. SMOKIN!!!!" <genepool@ix.netcom.com>
"they played with a whole lot of energy. Every time I see these guys
they never cease to impress me. The longest song clocked in at just
under 15min (ask the Fish) and most were between 5-8min. It amazing me
the amount of serious playing these guys can cram into a song. Mark is
continously incredible (not to understate the power of the others ;-)"
<kml0@pooch1.allencol.edu>
"Well, the boys really smoked the place tonight (the place being the
8X10 a great little venue in Baltimore, where the show was...TOUCHDOWN)
Second set was chock full of jams (you all must hear the Stairway to
Heaven -> Iron Man jam). As always the band was hot as hell, possibly
the best Salmon show I've seen" <barett@netcom.com>
"Let me just say that each of these guys are such excellent
musicians!!!! However, what continuously blows me away each and
everytime I see them is Drew on electic guitar (IT SCREAMS!!!!!!) and
Mark on his 'Tree Stump' Banjo! The sounds these guys make are
incredible." <taz@nowhere.Net>
"Wow, I arrived at Irving plaza around 9:30 on saturday night and bought
my ticket. Little did I know what kind of treat I was in phor. Leftover
came on about 11:15 and opened with a song I was kind of unphamiliar
with. The next song was Bend in the river which was so amazing. The
violin solo's were so tight and good. These guys are amazing they played
about a 20 minute headbag which rocked and they covered ther rolling
stones tune paint to black which was amazing. If anyone has a chance to
see these guys dont pass it up. Go phor it." <rotarybill@aol.com>
"A friend of mine out there in Baltimore caught salmon at the 8x10, and
(of course) LOVED them and had an amazing time. Yes, I know you're all
completely surprised that such a thing could happen, but it just goes to
show . . . there's no accounting for taste. ;^>"
<jeff.stampes@Xilinx.COM>
"And thanks to all of you on the list for sending groovy reports direct
from the hottest (I can imazine) LOS shows. Please remember, folks, the
legend of LOS has reached to Japan already." <MXJ02052@niftyserve.or.jp>
"Leftover Salmon--they're amazing! They describe themselves as 100%
PolyEthnicCajunSlamGrass. I saw them at the Paradise on 4/11. I was
dancing the whole time. Check them out---you won't be disappointed."
<ickulus@aol.com>
"Some of my other favorite things about the band include their ability
to drive the crowd into a frenzy with their ecstatic jamming, the energy
exchange between audience and band, the bands friendliness, and the
kindness of others in the audience. It's also a special pleasure to
watch newcomers stare with their jaws agape until the music moves into
their bodies and by the end of the show they're Dancing Uncontrollably.
(that was me(: )" <openint@cruzio.com>
"I saw Leftover Salmon last night at the Highlander and just wanted to
say THEY WERE SMOKIN!" <lsalvato@runet.edu>
"Check out Leftover Salmon and Medeski, Martin and Wood because I can't
say enough nice things about these guys!" <conjuraem@urvax.urich.edu>
"Wow!!!!!!! I had such a great time at the show on Friday in Raliegh,
NC. The guys were hot, as was the club." <pagey@email.unc.edu>
"Hello if anyone has a copy of this incredible show from last weekend at
Irving Plaza in NYC please get back to me." <rotarybill@aol.com>
"A friend of mine said, "It's impossible to go to a Salmon show and not
have a good time." I concurred. This was by far the best one [Asheville
- 4/22/96] I've seen yet! High, High, energy." <AMZENDEL@unca.edu>
"Saw these guys at Pearl St. in Northampton MA they blew me away!! If
you like Phish SEE THIS BAND and become a Salmonhead yourself! A little
Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass will always do the trick." <MonJef@nai.net>
---------------
[Here's some fan mail sent to their new Web site in April 1996]
"I saw your last two shows at the Fillmore and danced til I droppped.
Thanks." <csml@sirius.som>
"Your music beats all other poly slamgrash fakos and I am thoroughly
commited to whatever leftover salmon I may come across."
<garot@soc.sscnet.ucla.edu>
"You guys are incredible and I have HIGHLY enjoyed every show I've
caught in the last few years. I look forward to seeing you Friday @
Pearl Street, MA. Take care and stay in touch!" <wkbrew@aol.com>
"Hey guys, Thanks for the nice escape from urban madness the other
night at the Paradise in Boston -- It was fantastic...I woulda liked to
jump on your bus after the show..." <mcamillo@lynx.neu.edu>
"Say Jack Thompson! Marty here from Minnesota, hay you guys really
smoked the Fine Line last time in town. Here are a couple comments
received from wondering fans who had never seen you before. Jeff Ryder
'Jesus Christ I think I just saw the greatest band in my life'. Graig
Schoeneman 'Wow' Not mention alot of the little girls had what we
call here MPs. Even the Krewe was asking about you guys. I told them
they can lick my shorts. I told these people that you guys are alot of
fun checkÕem out. Not one Dad was there! except me. Next time in town I
will fill you guys in on the Krewe of Dads (Mpls). Before I go, 'I
gonna rise up wake & bake early on in the morning'! See Ya"
<Marty_Marion@Meyers.com>
"I saw your show in Cincinnati and had a great time. I think you guys
kick ass and can't wait till you make it around again!"
<s009sds@desire.wright.edu>
"well, i saw you play here at the 8x10 club in baltimore...i don't
remember jamming so hard in my whole life. i saw you once before at the
bluebird theatre in denver...wow..that was a kickass show too."
<jwolf2@zeus.towson.edu>
---------------
"If you're into Bela, you should also try to catch Leftover Salmon.
Lots o' fun." <nick@cybercom.net>
"Leftover Salmon was at Merle again this year. In addition to two
regular slamgrass sets, LoS did a "Rock Out" set with John Cowan
(formerly with New Grass Revival) and an "unplugged" bluegrass set. They
were amazing." <RHILLARD@cc.atinc.com>
"So, last night's show at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC was truly
amazing...definitely the best of the four that I've seen, and the scary
thing is, folks, they're only getting better! A very tight show, the
usual three hours long, and fun from top to bottom!"
<76463.1116@compuserve.com>
"Well, I doubt that there is anything magical about Polyethnic Cajun
Slamgrass, fine musical style though it is, that makes LOS shows so
consistently great. It's the five men who are its sole practicioners
that make it invariably amazing. They bring so much talent, energy,
spontenaity and (most importantly) FUN to the music that their
enthusiasm never wavers. They just get everyone so into it that every
show is a great one." <stighe@ix13.ix.netcom.com>
"I heard from a friend that this band KICKS ASS!!! I really want to hear
them." <yoda@wwa.com>
"They do KICK ASS. Love that Salmon." <preed@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us>
"FESTIIIIVVAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!! At least that's what it seemed like
this weekend, as Leftover Salmon took to the stage at Music Midtown,
Atlanta's annual music-fest. Wow, smoked salmon! The guys were just too
hot, and seemed undaunted by the "commercialization" of the festival and
had no problem dealing with the horrible acoustics of the park."
<John.H.Galloway@bridge.bst.bls.com>
"I am looking for a copy of the Northampton Leftover Salmon show on
4/12/96. It was the first time I saw them (or heard them, for that
matter), and I was totally blown away." <Daniel.Berger@ummed.edu>
"Actually Leftover Salmon were smoking! I can't wait to see them again
at Laguna Seca :) :D :-> =];->" <cparker@igc.apc.org>
"The last act [at Wavy Gravy's 60th birthday party in Berkeley] was
Leftover Salmon: drum, bass, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and Pete Sears on
piano and accordian. These boys are very hot - if you're going to
Laguna Seca, don't miss them. The mandolin player reminds me of Grisman
at his most frenetic (well, he would if Grisman had lost about 50 lbs).
Everyone in the band was excellent, and no one got lost in the mix-
pretty impressive. They do extremely complex arrangements, like a
jamming Dead, with everyone seemly going off to play their own thing,
then meshing together again. They're also very funny." <baum@apple.com>
"this guy was beyond frenetic; if grisman played at that speed for as
long as he did, he *would* lose about 50 pounds. right there on stage.
I've never seen such energy! Leftover Salmon was fun, definitely worth
watching for." <narad@nudibranch.asd.sgi.com>
"i just caught Salmon last light at this festival [Strawberry Music
Festival].... as usual, they Tore the Roof off the Sucka..... all the
other bands were ok, but LoS blew them all out of the water..."
<MAnsolab@aol.com>
"caught Leftover Salmon - they were GREAT" <glauer@lsil.com>
"I agree LS was wonderful" <stellab@ns.net>
"Salmon put on a great performance [opening for Widespread Panic at
Red Rocks]" "The guys were in really good shape for this concert, &
were having the most fun on stage i've ever seen them have..... the
drummer was jumping rope every second that he wasnt playing the drums, &
everyone else was jumping around having a great time.... at one point i
remember the drummer dancing around his drums (in a circle) while he was
playing along w/ the song..... there was some serious energy coming from
that stage.... & we had an electrical storm in the background for a
light show.... Unbelieveable!!! to motivate the salmon guys, every time
they looked up there was a sea of people shaking a MEAN leg (if you've
been to Red Rocks the place was at least over half full.... probably
4,000 people when they started & 7,000 by the time they were done)....
to add to the joyous time, Red Rocks lets you bring in your own
beverages..... wow, that was great:-)" <MAnsolab@aol.com>
"If the opening band's job is to get the audience revved up for the main
act, LoS was the perfect band. The whole place was bouncing and smiling
as we waited for the Panic. I'm so glad I went! =:-)... That's part of
what I like about Leftover Salmon (and Phish), that they goof on stage
and have some fun up there." <michael.page@exemplar.com>
"i would be unbelievably psyched to see leftover salmon or michael ray
and the cosmic krewe open for phish. either of these wonderful bands
would probably leave the audience completely out of breath before phish
even took the stage..." <j-price@nwu.edu>
"another good band to listen to is Leftover Salmon. Loud, in the car,
it'll beat them blues anyday (I know, it's been working great for me!)"
<hlcoburn@access.digex.net>
"[re High Sierra Music Fest] - Leftover Salmon: Polyethnic cajun
slamgrass...what more could you ask for? Fast-paced, high-energy
pickin', fun lyrics, and a great band to groove to. They played the Main
Stage, the Midnight Tent, and poolside at the Lodge! Another must see."
<pp54@columbia.edu>
"The boys kicked off their HORDE stint last night with an very energetic
show. The crowd was very enthusiastic considering it was only their
second time to play in Birmingham, the first being a month ago. Some in
the crowd were begging them to play through Blues Traveller :-). They
played that Drew song about the river with the great jam, the song where
Drew and Mark kinda duel, the song I have on a tape labeled "Better
Off", the song that goes "in a house, in a home", and closed the set
with a smokin' Paint It Black, which is one I was achin' to hear... I
can't wait for Leftover to come close to Birmingham again!"
<dritchey@mail.scsinc.com>
"[re the 7/20/96 H.O.R.D.E. show at Austin] needless to say LoS
played an energetic and practically nonstop set...i wish they could've
played longer... included were Do the Boogie, 4:20 , and Rise Up/Wake
and Bake. some friends saw LoS for the first time and said they lived up
to all of my praise/talk..." <brook@mail.utexas.edu>
"I went to HORDE last night [at the Shoreline Amphitheater on
7/28/96], and it was awesome. I *loved* rusted root and leftover
salmon (it was my first time seeing both), they were fun, and they
jammed." <mendo@ccnet.com>
"A few words about Leftover Salmon [at the 7/28 H.O.R.D.E.
show]... these guys f__kin' jam, period ('scuse my French, it just
kinda slipped out.) They played a bunch of songs, despite the short
stage time. The sound from stage two outshone stage one by miles.
Loud, crisp, punchy, obviously no poor acoustics to deal with, just a
great setting. Don't ask me what the hell they played. All I know is
Leftover played all but the second song with John [Medeski], who
just blended right in and knocked out some funky solos when they gave
him space (which was more than once.) Bluegrass, cajun, calypso, call
it whatever the hell you want, it was great. They closed with "Hey
Joe", complete with banjo, mandolin and John, no less. Wild. Folks,
let me tell you, there is some tasty fine music on the horizon. I can
feel it in my bones." <rbrennan@aol.com>
"Traveler and DMB have certainly waned in the last year or so. I would
say Leftover Salmon or Seapods before DMB or Traveler." <phnkyphrsh@aol.com>
"one of the best nights I've had at the Wetlands in some time...
Leftover Salmon: Wow! Every time I see these guys, I have a ton of fun.
Part of what accounts for that is that the entire band always looks like
they're having just as much fun if not more than everyone in the ground.
LOS went on around midnight or 12:15.. I left the Wetlands at **4:20-
4:30**am. Talk about a night of music in one of my favorite places to
see a band. Besides that fact that they were very willing to talk to
people after the show, and willing to keep playing after they were asked
to leave to the point that Wetlands encouraged them to stay. Wonderful
evening." <chrisnj776@aol.com>
[continuing on the Wetlands show...] "Gotta agree with you here!
They also had a special guest, Jim Page, who sat in with them for a
couple songs (am i crazy or do I remember Jim Page with them at
Merlefest?), which was very fun. These guys amaze me more every time I
see them; it's like nonstop energy. I was dying by 3, but managed to
prop myself up to keep dancin' until the bitter end... I mean, how
could you not? FESTIVAL!! First time I've gotten home at daylight in a
loooong time!" <daisycat@concentric.net>
[re: Warrenton, VA , 8/3/96] "My second encounter with the boys
from Boulder (and elsewhere ) couldn't have been much more spectacular.
I am continually impressed with the musical abilities of all of them,
and I was wondering, do they ever have a less than stellar performance??
From my vantage point on the lawn { a recently injured knee makes
severely liberated dancing a liability : ( } I saw *every* toe
start tapping with the opening strains of Gold Hill Line, people turning
their heads to each other with *big* smiles, seeming to say, " this is
how our weekend concerts should sound *every* Saturday night!!!!!!
People had their toddlers swinging and dancing like nobody's business
late (well, not too late) into the evening, and at one point (I forget
during what song) while a spirited 'conga/salmon' line rolled on the
street, it's twisted doppleganger of the 60+ set briefly made a short
sojourn on the lawn (headed for refreshments) like a psycedelically
challenged field trip. What FUN! I think on a certain level, all
people basically * understand * this type of music,(I use this term
because dig, enjoy, and love just don't seem to cut it) and the people I
saw understanding the fun that night were no exception. When the long
jam in Whispering Waters rolled out from the assembled musicians, the
symbiotic feedback from the people gathered with them just astounded me.
Talk about lovin' life!" <espall@netrix.com>
[more on Warrenton] "Boy Howdy did that show kick butt!! I'll add
my two pennies in with Marcie and Ed and say - WHAT A DAY!"
<erjanus@welchlink.welch.jhu.edu>
[and again] "Can't add much to the Sat. gig, except. The band
talks about getting all kinds of different people out there dancing, but
till then, I'd never seen it. You literally had parents dancing w/ kids
on their shoulders or the parents dancing w/ the kids, or just the kids
dancing on their own (as well as the adults). It was a mad scene, and I
don't think I saw a face without a smile in the place."
<barett@netcom.com>
"The Warrenton show reminded me how SPECIAL LOS is! Such a good feeling,
as many have mentioned to dance in the street with young and old, all
just enjoying the moment. When Jerry died and the GD disbanded I had a
big hole in my heart. There was something I got from being a "deadhead"
that was WAY more than the music. I thought for a while it might be gone
forever, but now I realize it's still there, just a little more spread
out. LOS shows, and the friends I've made there, are one place "IT" is
THRIVING!" <coyote@nando.net>
"Just a newbie to this list who wanted to add to the general echo and
commentary on the great energy, music, dancing and night that made up
the Warrenton show; a truly great event. Add to that the excellent
people we met and you have nothing else but LoSers, of course..."
<wpainter@erols.com>
"Please tell your son "Thanks" for some incredible music. He and Bela
have inspired me to switch from guitar to banjo. They have opened my
eyes to new forms of music. For this I am eternally grateful."
<Burrdog@aol.com>
"Now my desire for another Leftover encounter is even greater than I
imagined! ...they are some *damn* fine people who make *damn* fine music
and provide all with a *damn* good time! I've never danced with such
joyful abandon.... We felt very fortunate to have such gracious hosts
and to spend time with these vibrant people, and to have Mark as our
unofficial Leftover Ambassador. My friends and I just wanted to let you
know what a truly wonderful person your son is, and an incredible picker
at that! " <zipperhd@io.com>
[re Wolf Trap, 8/4/96] "Was really cool seeing all the tied-dyed
people and stealies over at Ricky Scaggs' Pickin Party over at Wolf Trap
on Sunday!!!! :) even a few spinners showed up to help fill the dancin
area :) :) :) a fun night indeed.. and really funny how, even tho Mr.
Scaggs thought/said we prolly didn't know who Bela Fleck & Leftover
Salmon were, the crowd cheered loudest for those 2 bands!! :) heheheeh.
nope...never heard of em... who're we here to see?? hehehee"
<waif@netcom.com>
[Again, referring to Ricki Scaggs Pickin' Party w. Bela Fleck, Sam
Bush, Tony Rice, et al...] "...the highlight of which was
definitely Leftover Salmon, a band whose sound has all the funky, down-
and-dirty, intensity its name suggests. The plethora of hippies who
graced the concert were obviously elated when the band made its
entrance, and even the middle aged, carefully groomed couple sitting in
front of me seemed sorry to see these filthy, longhairs go at the end of
their set. Playing what they refer to as "Cajun Slam Grass," the Salmon
let out about a thirty minute set of rockin' hillbilly swing with enough
Deliverance style squealing thrown in to make you more cautious about
visiting the great state of Colorado -- where these boys hail from. The
great thing about their music though is the noise. When the mandolin and
the guitar, and the fiddle all start blending into one rowdy cacophony
even alot of the seated members joined the group on the lawn for a dance
or two proving that Leftover Salmon is great music to lose your
inhibitions to." By Michael Santa Rita, SPECIAL TO THE POP ART TIMES
[from their Web site]
[re: R.O.A.M. Festival, 8/96] "This was the time of my life
folks! If, as Vince said, this was the first annual ROAM festival and
they do it again next year, GO!! If you can only take one vacation next
summer, plan it around ROAM!...
It was absolutely the best concert atmosphere I have ever been a part
of. It was mellow when it was supposed to be mellow, and high-octane
raging when appropriate. Non-stop music for like 14 hours a day! I was
too wrapped up in the event to keep much track of the sets or the
lineups, but Tim and others have already done a good job of that.
Basically, it was a constant all-star jam session, with everyone sitting
in with everyone else....
And then there was Leftover Salmon. WOW! I'm still shaking from the
intensity of those two shows. I'd seen 'em a few times, and I've got a
bunch of tapes, but man, it was never like this! High On A Mountaintop
was so beautiful, and so appropriate, it chilled me to the bone. The
Rivers Rising and One Love on Saturday were just staggering! Hey Joe has
already been described, and words just don't do it justice. Gotta hear
the tapes! An incredible experience from beginning to end."
<stighe@ix.netcom.com>
[re: Wavy Gravy's Hog Farm Pignic show on 9/1/96] "Sunday's show
was the best I have ever seen from LOS! MORE SALMON! MORE SALMON! MORE
SALMON!" <roach@aimnet.com>
"The show in Ashland [OR] was definitely a treat. They played at
the Buffalo Music Hall, a.k.a. the Old Ashland Armory. By my
calculations, (my concept of time was a little off that night) they
played about four hours. Aside from some technical difficulties Drew had
with his fiddle, it was a smoking show!!! Tye was a-funkin', Mark was a-
shakin', Mike was a-thumpin', Drew was a-wailin', and Vince was a-
preachin' to the mass wrigglin' in front of the stage. The show ended
with the crowd singing "Rise-up-wake-n-bake" over and over while the
owner of the place stood on stage waiting for it to end so she could
thank everybody. She was pleased, albeit a little befuddled, from what I
could tell. It was a cool place; Ashland's a beautiful town and had a
friendly vibe. Now I'm really jonesin' for another show."
<zipperhd@io.com>
"Thought I'd mention a really awesome thing the band did on Monday for
the kitchen staff at the Hog Farm [Pignic]. These folks feed well
over 800 people, 3 times a day and snacks in between! Barely time to
see any music; sooooo... Mark, Drew & Vince show up, eat lunch and
proceed to play for about a half hour for the staff. It was a mighty
fine gesture and by the looks of the crew: well worth it. Songs
included a variety of food based tunes including Squirl Heads & Gravvy
and Vince's brand new tune "cabin in time". I just love it when the
boys bust out the acoustics for the pure reason of sharing music. Let's
Pick!!" <epa@yellowpine.com>
"Ya know, I love these guys and their attitudes and willingness to share
and their pure joy and love for the music. WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
<taz@nowhere.Net>
"...the always awesome Vail crowd packed in under the roof [of the
Gerald Ford Ampitheater] and rocked out with the guys for one big
set and even a few guests (what else is new?). Merl Saunders and part of
the horn section from Psychedelic Zombies contributed to a rousing Blues
in a Bottle. As usual, I'm not one for set lists but the crowds
enthusiasm definitely helped bring the house down during one long set of
killer pickin'! Would you believe a double encore?"
<epa@yellowpine.com>
"The dead can never be replaced, but there are other good times out
there. Go to a Leftover Salmon show AS SOON AS YOU CAN!"
<pdunham@u.washington.edu>
"I saw them [ARU] jam with Leftover Salmon and Phish at Nectar's
early in 1994. It was billed as a Salmon show but ARU and Phish made a
surprise appearance. They jammed for hours and hours. At times all
members of all bands were on stage but they would just wander on and off
and it was always different combinations of musicians. Probably one of
my best musical experiences." <caitlin.daniels@harpercollins.com>
"Boy howdy!! Just rolled off the train from that crazy, mind-boggling
whirl-of-a-time at the Georgia Theater in Athens. Just when you think
these guys [Leftover Salmon, natch!] can't possibly make things
better from the last show you saw/heard/were blown away at, they manage
to transcend it all and pull out even more insanity. Such was the case
last night! For those of you who were there, this was evidenced in the
second set. I didn't time it, but it went on for... days."
<gt5685d@prism.gatech.edu>
"Just got back from the Leftover Salmon and Widespread Panic show. I
really wish LoS would come play a full show in Alabama, or that they
would do one in the area when I can go..<sigh>. The boys were absolutely
on fire, as usual." <DRITCHE1@UA1VM.UA.EDU>
"Man what a show [Variety Playhouse, Atlanta]!!!! I haven't danced
that hard since PHISH's 2nd night at Deer Creek this summer... Eagerly
awaiting a full scale Alabama FESTIIIIIVAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!"
<ZU03570@UABDPO.DPO.UAB.EDU>
">Leftover Salmon took the stage next. Wow. After they finished, I
>immediately went to the concession booth and got their CD. Why aren't
>they on AWARE?!? Anyway, they play similarly to Grateful
>Dead/Phish/Dave/with a folksy Aware-style twist. Very nice. This band
>was the most popular of the evening, and I promise you that LS will be
>making it big soon... VH and LS are fantastic, so go see either if you
>get the chance." message from AwareNet forwarded by <cmo7x@virginia.edu>
"I asked Bruce [Hornsby], if he had ever heard of a band called
Leftover Salmon from Colorado. He thought for a second or two and then
said, 'Yea, they have a bluegrass feel to them, right? They sent me a
couple of their tapes. They are really good and they have a great
sound. You would not believe how much garbage I get. But those guys are
really good.'" <robkatz@erols.com>
"Phish is a concert band. I enjoy more of the concert tapes I have than
any album. BB [Billy Breathes - the latest Phish album] may look
mainstream, but it will fizzle. The concerts will continue to keep
going. The ultimate concert would be WSP, Leftover Salmon, and Phish."
<bjaj@nternet.net>
"I'm a big Phish fan, but recently I've been finding that I like LoS
even better than Phish. I'm glad there's a forum for LoSers."
<cct@minn.net>
"Ziggy's was PACKED!... I got to the show late, to find the HUGEST
crowd I've ever seen [there]. At least 1000 folks, gotta love
it... THANK YOU LoS !!!!!!!!!!!! (and Jack [their road manager]
for lettin 'em play so long)... The show was incredible..."
<nickh@ncnatural.com>
"I know alot of people, myself included, who consider WSP and LoS as
their two favorite bands... Anyway I hope you get the chance to hang
with these fellows. They are super cool and I'm sure they will treat you
right." <JPRITCHARD@fginc.com>
"I danced til I died, then I danced some more...what a great show!
[Trax 10/25/96] The River's Rising was a real treat... It was
especially great to meet the band... I still can't walk up and down the
stairs cause my ankles hurt from jumping around so much at Trax and the
Bayou... What a great scene! I can't even fathom passing up Salmon for
some other kinda phish :)" <hlcoburn@access.digex.net>
"They played forever. Every time I thought it was the last, they rocked
out on another one. They were sounding mighty nice. I heard several
people(who sounded like it was their first show) around me talking about
how "tight" they sounded, how true?! All I can say is they better not
spend too long in the studio because I'm ready to see them again now!!!"
<pagey@email.unc.edu>
"To Marcie and anyone else who decided to see Phish instead of catching
Salmon. I hope Phish was amazing, cause the show you missed was...
I've seen LoS about 5 times now and have a good batch of tapes, I've
never heard jamming like this. Really great stuff with amazing solos.
It all just floored you to the nth degree. The Jokester following was
hot as usual. It's such a great song ;) And if the club hadn't turned
the music on I'm sure that Wake & Bake would still be going even though
the band was already at the bar by the time it ended. The mellow songs
of the night were a very nice breather between the songs that just drove
you to the brink of exhaustion. In short everything we've come to
expect from a leftover salmon show." <barett@netcom.com>
"Leftover's one of my other favorite bands. They are certainly among
the top three bands that I like to see live (Panic, Phish, Salmon)...
I've seen 'em play about 15 shows by now, mostly east coast and
colorado, with one in mississippi. I saw 'em this summer at the
American Music Fest in Winter Park and I was told there were at least 5
different record reps there..." <Daniel_Gold@Brown.edu"
"Saturday night [at the Bayou, 10/26/96] was........ferocious.
Undoubtedly the hottest they've been in my limited memory. Think they
actually played like, just shy of 3 hrs. 45 minutes altogether... the
boys were hot, and ferocious was the only word I could use to describe
the pickin'... When I try to describe LoS to someone, I start out by
saying, Well, it's very bluegrassy, but polyethniccajunslamgrass is *so*
much more. These guys rock with the best of them. Saturday night
proved it to several people I had brought with me, who had only heard a
tape or two. The perma-grins are still on!" <espall@netrix.com>
"i just wanted to say thanks to everyone who recommended LoS to me. the
bayou was my first show and i was blown away! never before have i heard
anyone make a mandolin sound like steel drums, that's for sure. i read
all the reviews out so far, and have to say i'm impressed and definitely
grateful." <jenmar@wam.umd.edu>
"For my review, all I can really think to say is the word *dynamics*...
their selections went all over the place, from a well-built and
terrifically jammed Whispering Waters to the zydeco fun of "That Was"
and Mardi Gras to the beauty of Breaking Thru and The Bridge... these
guys just keep getting better." <76463.1116@compuserve.com>
"He's right on w/ this one kids! I was there [10/26/96] and can
assure you this is one *fun* show! Hot is an understatement! You won't
be disappointed. I can't remember when I've had so much fun @ a show."
<rshall@richmond.infi.net>
"Wow. I must admit how bummed I am at not going with my gut instincts
and blowing off Phish to make the Bayou. Oh well, live and learn. I am
*psyched* that it was excellent!!! In fact, i'd be pretty darn
disapointed if it wasn't." <taz@nowhere.Net>
"my name is Sean, I'm 17, and live in Cincinnati. I saw Salmon on 4-6-96
(also taped) and was completly blown away. Unfortunately when Salmon
returned to Cincy on Sept.31, they came to a place called Ripley's. A
bar :( Since I'm 17, I couldn't get in. Fortunately for me, my dad
(44) is also a bigtime Salmonhead (via me, of course) so he went to the
show (and taped)... More news: I did catch they WSP/Salmon show at the
Red Mile Race Track in Lexington, KY. It was an afternoon concert and a
very nice day. Salmon rocked the place for 45 minutes.......too short if
you ask me. Words of encouragement: I brought 3 friends with me to that
show who were total virgins to Salmon, and now are complete
LoSers.......Rise Up Wake and Bake t-shirts and all!!!! They are now
beggin me for shows, and to borrow my LoS discs." msg. forwarded by

"I first ran into LoS at MerleFest last year and was completely blown
away--already they rank right up there with the Dead for me... I very
much regretting missing the Bayou for Phish (but, all of my tickets and
rides, etc. were set up before I knew about the LoS shows)-- just a side
note that I have been discussing with some of my friends (I don't know
how many of you like Phish) but lately, I have been noticing that the
scene at Phish is getting less and less friendly and some of the people
who come aren't interested in being friendly and dancing and talking.
It is pretty scary to me-- especially since the Dead is no longer
around-- but of the two LoS shows I've seen, I've noticed a totally
different atmosphere-- and though I completely love the music, it is
totally enhanced by the people, which fills a void for me which the end
of the Dead left-- I was just wondering if anyone else has been having
these same vibes." <evansrl@mnsinc.com>
"That goes without saying. I started trekking to Merlefest two years ago
to catch them, and the Bayou show definetely smoked anything that I have
seen in the past. My huge fear is that they will outgrow the place. I
was so close to the speakers that I couldn't hear for two days. That
won't happen in the US Air Arena." <IGillespie@aol.com>
"just saw LOS at Trax in C'ville the 25th. still recovering from it.
me and my brother went (first time) and we were both completely blown
away... we had the best time ever. Twas a great show and the small size
of trax added to the friendly atmosphere. everyone was dancing and
having a wonderful time (including us)." <LUSD22A@prodigy.com>
"great blistering show [refering to 10/24/96 at Ziggy's]....
probably the greatest sweatin with LoS show thus far??"
<arnoldgr@pilot.msu.edu>
"Yep, just back from a weekend of bluegrassercise with Salmon....can I
say enough good things about them? I think not. I have just had one of
the best weekends I've ever had music-wise...Salmon plays stupendous,
awesome, high-country-kickin-your-heels-up, shake your ass slamgrass.
And not only that, but a bunch of incredibly nice people :) ...LEFTOVER
SALMON!!!!! Don't even let me get started. These guys are
unbelievable! Two shows this weekend, and I'm still recovering."
<hlcoburn@access.digex.net>
"I'll second that emotion! I saw them for the fourth or fifth time about
a week and a half ago in Chattanooga opening for Widespread, they are in
the best form I've seen them in and are tearin the roof off the sucker."
<gt0556d@acmey.gatech.edu>
"Yes, it's happened, and yes, I checked it out! I was going to go to the
show [at the Fillmore] in person, then found out about the
webcast. The thought of it just seemed too wild to miss! I had to buy
some special s/w and even then had problems setting it up and getting it
to work. It was GREAT! (in a word) I had my stereo plugged into it all,
so the sound was enjoyable. The picture wasn't quite real time, but I
still got to see the boys doin' it! I have to say, I haven't checked out
too much live stuff on the web, and this was exciting! It feels neat to
have been a part of it. The music itself was sweet. They jammed hard
and it was so smooth. Really! I can't wait for the show tonight!!"
<openeyes@well.com>
"Seeing Salmon at the Fillmore last night was a great topper after
seeing the webcast the night before. ...my friend, who has never heard
Salmon said she really liked the general vibe. She said she hadn't felt
a vibe like it since the 'Dead'. She is extremely psyched and ready for
Salmon Festival! ...In general, the show was sold out and there were
several people waiting in the rain for xtras. The people inside were
dancing fools and Very Appreciative...I noticed the applause seemed
especially explosive." <openeyes@well.com>
"Missed you at the Fillmore last night!!!! Just another totally
smoooookin' slaammmmmmmmmmmon show!!!! ...they did a very very sweet
Funky Mtn Fogdown in the second set, and the encore was HUUUUUGE --
Paint it Black, but, if you can believe it, even more intense than
normal right from the start. Drew was GOING OFFF and the other band
members were looking at him like "Slow down Drew, we just started the
song.." ...the second set was **EXCELLENT** right from the start. The
place was going NUTS and the energy made it to the stage. I was
extremely pleased!!!!!!!" forwarded by <taz@nowhere.net>
"They have re-arranged the Jam coming out of Boogie which makes it sound
ENORMOUS. Mama Boulet featured a new jam (at least one i've never heard
before) which segued into an amazing drum solo! Someone was sitting in
on Bongos Friday night set 2 & boy howdy him & Mr. Wooten were
smooooookin. ...holy-mackerol Tye is a mad-man on that Fretless Bass.
Songs that are popping in my head are THIS OLD ROUNDER, Ask the Fish,
Whispering waters.... & there were many more. Tye on the Fretless has
added a whole new dimension to those songs (especially Rounder). The
sound he gets on that Modulus is superb! Hopefully he busts it out for
some of their studio-recordings..." <MAnsolab@aol.com>
"[back to Warrenton -- one more time!] I just remember the street
being full of people ranging from about 5 years old to about 55. And
then when that girl (about 11 years old I think) started leading the
conga line through the crowd? Man, [stuff] just got interesting.
Near the end of the show I took a break on the lawn and just watched the
madness in the street. Let me say you all looked beautiful. Hot, sweaty,
and grinning, the way things should be at a LoS show. This was
definitely a night where the bridge was not only built and crossed, but
had to be enlarged due to the heavy traffic. It was definitely a night."
<barett@netcom.com>
"> Leftover Salmon are pretty hot...
Oh, absolutely! But they've been around a while and have gone national.
Now when they come back to town the Fox is so packed you can't even
move... These guys absolutely jam. This show [at the Fox] was so packed
I couldn't move at all, which was a real bummer because you have to
dance when you hear them." <cleo@unidata.ucar.edu>
"I've been thinking about LOS and the wonderful time I had at Trax and
the Bayou. Heather and I spent some time talking to the boys backstage
both nights. Those guys 'couldn't be betta.'" <michlh@mindspring.com>
"I just got back here to CA after a wild New Years in Boulder..... &
hot-damn did we get a treat!!!!!! The Boulder Theatre is an amazing
little place...... I was VERY impressed. The Zukes of Zydeco opened, &
an hour into their set all the Salmon guys were up playing w/ them. It
turned into an all Salmon set after a funny version of K-Sir-Ra-Sir-Ra
(spelling's waaay off). The house was a hoppin' for the 1st set which
featured songs like the Bridge, Cash on the Barrellhead, Nothing But
Time, & a Doin' My Time that clocked in at 12mins or so. I've seen them
play Doin' My time 3 or so times in the last 5 months & every one has
ended up in a different place musically..... They can take this Jam so
many places, I Love It!!!
Ok, it was right before midnight when thing got NUTS. A Full-On Mardis-
Gras parade started on the stage & worked it's way like a snake through
the audience. The parade was lead by a 15-20 ft. tall BERT!!!!!!!
Following were the MayorMcCheese in all his Glory, miniture Bert's, the
Bridge, complete horn sections, bongo players, 5-person fishy's,
uhhhhhhh, gals throwing out flourescent necklaces (which everyone had on
by the end of the night) & i'm sure i've left something out. Everyone
passed around Champagne bottles & i myself got soaked in the crud, but
JEEZE-LOUIS this parade was complete outrageous!!!!!!!!!!! <if anyone
clipped some pictures, please email me i'd LOVE a print>
2nd set started as the pardade filtered out w/ Auld Lyng Sang (really
butchered spelling) bluegrassed out. At midnight a ton of Balloons were
dropped on the dance floor. Things get a bit fuzzy after this, but good
lord i recalll some OUTLANDISH BOOGIE'N, & even Slam-Dancing during
Better & R. Rising. A couple really cool songs i didn't recognize, a
beautiful Breakin' Through. The set closed off w/ an awesome Iko Iko->
Rise/Wake...... the whole show Vince had been talking about taking the
party to the Boulder streets at the end of the night, & they did just
that!!! As they got us to chant "Rise Up, Wake & Bake" they made
their way into the Audience lining up in Mardi Gras form..... Needless
to say everyone else followed in a big line that danced right out the
front door on to the streets. This escapade traveled quite a few city
blocks & took over the Pearl Street Mall & lemme tell ya it was quite a
sight!!!!!!!!!!! The whole night was such an absolute blast, i still
have perma-grin :~) It was nice to see Salmon in their home town, they
were really having a blast & so were we!!!!! Easily the best New Years
i've ever had (the Bert was finally Bridged)
I want to say this was the greatest Salmon show w/ the greatest
crowd i've seen, but i seriously think that after every show i see.....
can't wait till the next one!!!!!!" <MAnsolab@aol.com>
"The New Year's Eve show was a grand success at the Boulder Theater once
again as the whole darned fambly put their best effort forward. Anytime
you tap into the collective energy of the Salmonheads by combining both
Leftover Salmon & The Zukes of Zydeco you're bound for big fun!
We dressed the set with lots of unusual props on it like Charlie Brown,
The Cat In the Hat, a 15 foot iron angel wing with a swing for father
time all wrapped around random film & video images projected through
most of the night on the back wall and a giant clock face. Father time
seemed to struggle with the clock as it kept wanting to spin back to
4:20 from Midnight. Dick Hippy (you remember him?) made a triumphant
return flying a giant green pencil over the crowd while a huge parade
consisting of a 12 foot Bert, The Bridge to 97, Many foam fish of
various sizes and a 13 piece marching band pranced through the room.
Drew was dressed in a lovely blue sequened leisure jacket while Vince
went for the more traditional white tuxedo. Mark was sporting a marching
band jacket giving him a Sgt. Pepper aire about him.
Sally Van Meter once again lended her lap steel sound to several tunes
and the Zukes came to the stage more than once through the night. High
energy music for a high energy crowd.
Toward the end of the show Vince led about 300 people & marching band
members right out the front door of the theater onto Pearl Street's
walking mall eventually circling the county courthouse while everyone
sang "W-n-B" at the top of their lungs.(reminincent of last year's
Acoustic Coffee house post show parade) It was quite a specticle which
suprisingly didn't attract the police. After about twenty minutes, the
parade broke up peacefully and Pearl Street returned slowly to a
somewhat normal state.
All in all a grand night.... words can't quite capture the events but it
was worth the effort.
For those lucky enough to make it, we'd love to hear your comments. It
was great to see so many out of towners travel great distances to spend
New Year's with all of us!" <epa@yellowpine.com>
