Sao Sebastiao Island

Sao Sebastiao Island is situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the shore of Sao Paulo at 23°46' S and 45°22' W. Besides Buzios, Cabras, Castelhanos, Codo, Figueira, Galhetas, Ilha dos Pescadores, Serraria, Vitoria and the Sumiticas Islands it belongs to the Ilhabela archipelago. The whole island has approx. 20.000 inhabitants and covers a size of 346 sqkm and 84% of this area belongs to a National Reservate since 1977. The highest elevation is 1375m asl, temperatures average between 22° and 28° Celsius.

The island was discovered by Americo Vespucio on January 20, 1502 and named after Holy Sebastian. Before the Portuguese landed in the 16th century and enlarged this place to a fortress this was home to to the Tupinambas Indians who called their island Ciribai ("silent place"). Since 1533 the calm sea at Saco Sombrio served as a perfect headquarters for Dutch and British pirates looking for Portuguese caravelles. On Sep 3, 1805 the district was named after Princess Beira "Villa Bella da Princeza", in 1838 renamed to "Formosa" and in 1944 to "Ilhabela".

Nowadays this is the Baleares of Brasil attracting 100.000 tourists only between Christmas and Carnival mainly by its 36 km of sand beaches, a 22km offroad track for 4x4 drivers or sailing, surfing and diving possibilities. Amateur radio: PY2, IOTA SA-028, locator grid GG76
