OKINAWA ISLAND

Okinawa is situated at 26 deg 19'North and 127 deg 31'South between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is the main island of the Okinawa Group which forms together with the Satsun Group the so called Ryukyu Group (also called Nansei Shoto) with more than 70 islands. The Ryukyu Group is spreading over 1300 km from the southern tip of Japan to Taiwan. The climate is subtropical with almost constant 21-25 degrees centigrade resulting from the numerous daily rainfalls. The monsoon time is in September and October with frequent typhoons.

The suburb Shuri of the capital Naha (nowadays about 300.000 inhabitants) was residencial city of the Kingdom Ryukyu from 1429 until 1879. Even today one can visit the well conserved Shurimon Gate of the palace. The islands belonged to Japan until World War 2 when Okinawa fell to the United States until 1972. Today the islands are a part of Japan again.

The complete west coast was declared a national park because of its nice sandy beaches. Tourist destinations are the caves, the remarkable Himeyuri cacti park with 1000 year old plants, the swimming city Aquapolis and the former headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Navy (a war memorial today). In the town of Okinawa one gets the impression to be in the United States which are running a large military base around the airport Kadena.

Amateur radio: Okinawa belongs to Japan. It was an own DXCC entity called the Ryukyu Islands (JR6, KA6, KR6, KR8) until May 14, 1972. Prefix now: JA6, CQ zone 25, ITU zone 45, IOTA: AS-017, Time difference: UTC +9h
