Amsterdam Island is situated at 37 deg 50' South and 77 deg 30' East in the Indian Ocean (about 3000 km away from Africa, Australia and Antarctica). This island is of volcanic origin, about 9km long, 7.5km wide and measures approximately 55 sqkm in size. The coastline is mostly very steep and about 400-700m high in the West. Highest elevation is the Mont de la Dives (881m) which extincted a long time ago like the other volcanoes Le Fernand (741m), Le Grand Balcon (616m) and Le Pignon (720m).

Ile Amsterdam, its neighboring island St. Paul (90km away; area 7 sqkm), Crozet and Kerguelen are French Antarctic islands the so-called "Terres Australes et Antarctiques". Contrary to the other islands the vegetation on Amsterdam offers a rich animal and plant life caused by the relatively mild climate. The average temperature over the year is 13.5 degrees centigrade and the precipitation is rather strong with 1120mm drizzle on 238 days/year. The humidity is relatively constant at 80 percent. Some say this is the last place before the Antarctic where trees grow.

Amsterdam Island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1559 and explored by the Dutch in 1633. France took over the islands in 1843. Martin de Vivies was founded in 1949 and is now home to some scientists working in a research station. Codfish and lobsters are caught by the fishermen from Reunion.
