8A, INDONESIA (New IOTA!). A group of operators from Indonesia and Italy plan to activate Masalembu Island as 8A3M, July 29th through August 4th. This will be a new IOTA (AS-###). Operators mentioned are: YC3DIK, YC3IZK, YC3MM, YC3OX, IT9SSI, IV3FSG, IZ8CCW and possibly others from the Mediterraneo DX Club. They expect to be active with two or three stations on the air on SSB, CW and RTTY. They are looking for contributions/donations for this operation. QSL via IZ8CCW.

9M2, WEST MALAYSIA (IOTA Op). Keith, GM4YXI, informs OPDX that after 5 months, and with lots of help from local people, he has managed to get his licence renewed once more. He plans to be active August 9-11th from Pulau Ketam (AS-074) and August 16-19th from Pulau Babi Besar (AS-046). The weekend of August 24-25th is still open. Keith will be active as 9M2/GM4YXI on CW/SSB on 20/17/15/12/10 meters, using the usual IOTA SSB frequencies and around 14040, 18088, 21040, 24910 and 28040 on CW. Using only a 100w and a vertical antenna, he will operate split (up) as necessary. Keith states he will look out specifically for openings to NA, especially the East Coast since this is a particularly challenging path. QSL only via Kim Larson, (c/o N3SL), 22 N Hidden Acres Dr, Sioux City, IA 51108, USA. Kim and Steve also have logs for his previous 9M2 activity. See the following Web page for details: http://www.qsl.net/n3sl/manager.htm He will try to get the online log updated as soon as possible after each trip. Keith will actually be there on medical business and states, "As ever, with this sort of trip (the expeditions are not the primary reason for my visit to Malaysia), last minute issues may cause a change of plan." Check the Web page for updates at: http://www.gm7v.com/

C5, THE GAMBIA. Juha, OH9MM, is going to celebrate his 30th birthday (November 28th) with a special Multi/Multi operation (Multi/Single also considered) from Gambia. The main focus is to operate the contest, but there will also be some activity before and after the contest (November 20th through December 1st). Activity will be on CW/SSB/RTTY/PSK31 on 160-6 meters. Operation site will be near Banjul and the callsign will be C53M. Juha reports that he has now 10 people to go with him (some not hams). However, he still needs a couple of CW operators to join them. Juha states The Gambia is very easy to get to and cheap access, at least for Scandinavian operators (others are also OK!). If interested, contact him at: oh9mm@sral.fi

IOTA CONTEST THIS WEEKEND (July 27-28th)! With the contest coming up this weekend, it seems that the IOTA Contest gets bigger and bigger every year. OPDX recommends to visit Bill's, NG3K, Web page. You may want to see the growing list of RSGB IOTA potential contestants on the NG3K Announced Operations Web page for this contest: http://www.ng3k.com/Misc/iota2002.html The page currently contains information about 131 operations from islands around the world, as announced by their organizers and friends. The page is also available in versions sorted by DXCC entity and IOTA number. To access these, just click on the appropriate heading at the top of the main page table. Those wanting an ASCII version of the list that they can more easily copy/paste for local editing can find it at: http://www.ng3k.com/Contest/conasc.html Additional operations may be submitted by using the form found at: http://www.ng3k.com/Contest/consub.html. Don't forget to include the island name and IOTA number in the Notes field. Finally, Ric, DL2VFR also maintains a page of announced operations that contestants may want to refer to. It can be found at: http://www.iota-post.de/contest2002/hauptteil_contest2002.html

LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND ACTIVITY.................

MD4, ISLE OF MAN. Look for a group of operators to be active as MD4K during the IOTA Contest. P5, NORTH KOREA. QSL Manager Bruce, KK5DO, informs OPDX that Ed, P5/4L4FN, has repaired his AL-80a linear. It had a blown rectifier bridge. He had temporarily hooked up another 12v power supply so he could still use it and has just completed replacing the bridge with a larger one. He had to take the Hex Beam down. The mast he was using wasn't strong enough to hold it and the rotor. He is looking for something that will work better, and that might have to wait until he goes back to Beijing in 4-5 weeks. His work at the present time has kept him from doing as much operating as he would like, but he will be back on more as things settle down. Meanwhile, with great news that Ed's RTTY activity is now good for DXCC (see DXCC News above), Ed was active this past weekend on 20 meters RTTY (14081 kHz after 1130z) and 15 meters SSB (21225 kHz around 0415z).

PP3, BRAZIL (Island Op). Operators PY3JAF/Fauth, PY3ACC/Christensen, DL7AXD/Christopf, PY3YY/Garofalo, PY3KK/Koetz and PY3DX/Toledo will activate Casa da Polvora Island, valid only for DIB award, not IOTA. The DIB (Diploma das Ilhas Brasileiras) number is 33. They will use the callsign PP3P and activity will take place during the IOTA Contest.

He was an RAF veteran, and was active in the IOTA, Holy Land, WAB and Islands of Scotland Award (IOSA) Programs. He is survived by Annette, his wife of 42 years. Those of us who knew Eric, and had the pleasure of operating from islands with him, were honored to have called him friend."

Please include SASE or return postage.
