The Whitelaw Family

Welcome to our pages devoted to the Whitelaw family history. We will be updating our content frequently so please revisit soon.

My Whitelaw ancestors all descend from General James Whitelaw, Surveyor General of Vermont.
General James Whitelaw, b. 1/31/1748, Old Monkland, Scotland, d. 4/29/1829, was the son of William Whitelaw, b. 1715, d. 1787, a farmer and miller near Bothwell, Scotland and his wife Marion Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, Scotland.

A great deal of information about this line of the Whitelaws can be found in the "History of Ryegate Vermont", 1913, by Miller and Wells. This history contains portions of James Whitelaw's Journal in which he tracked his travels for the Scotch-American company. Another history of interest is "The House of Whitelaw, a Short History from A.D. 1400 to A.D. 1900", 1928, Glascow, by H. Vincent Whitelaw, F.S.A. Scot. You will find information about these books and more here.

I will be adding content from these histories and other sources to this website so please return.
