4th Arrondissement (Right Bank)

Hotel view North

Looking from the window of my room in the Hôtel Saint-Louis Marais toward the north along Rue du Petit Musc. The Boulanger & Pâtissier (red storefront) had tasty baked goods.

Hotel view South

Looking from my hotel window toward the south along Rue du Petit Musc. Beyond the trees at the end of the street is the river Seine.

Place de Bastille

After checking in and a quick nap I wandered around the neighborhood: right into part of a massive demonstration by the fire brigade. The Place de Bastille would normally be filled with cars. In other parts of the city the police and the firefighters clashed and 15 cops were injured. That is not a fountain. It is a an open fire main and the water flowed down into the Opéra.

fin de zone touristique

Just south of the Place de Bastille, was the oddest sign. Fin de Zone Touristique. I went past it of course. Anyway, the cops were busy.

(I later found out that it refers to a zoning regulation concerning businesses being open on Sundays.)

RATP ticket litter

Among the usual street litter (cigarette butts, leaves, &c.) there were lots of discarded purple tickets for the Métro and RER. A distinctively Parisian litter.

I bought a weekly pass (Carte Orange) and didn't litter.

Saint-Gervais is Gothic and Baroque at the same time

Saint Gervais had a facelift. An old Gothic church with a Baroque front. It is a bit jarring.

Some boys out early from school played football (soccer) in the Place Saint Gervais at Noon. Schoolbags set the goals. The Hôtel de Ville is in the background.

A vendor of old musical instruments. Interesting window display and a good name too.

Alley between rue du Pont Louis-Philippe and rue des Barres

This old alley is behind Saint Gervais. Even in late November there are flowers in the window boxes.
