A Museum and Some Icons

Musée d'Orsay

A former railroad station on the left bank of the Seine. It was abandoned because the trains got longer than the platforms. The museum focuses on the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lots of Impressionism. Since this is popular, and the museum is right by the river across from the Louvre, it gets lots of tourists. Most things in the museum did not photograph well and anyway the souvenir photos that they sell are better than what I could do. But I did take a few photos of one scuplture.

Polar Bear

This polar bear was so cute. More typical statuary can be seen in the background. They were very dramatic and allegorical. But they don't photograph all that well. The polar bear was a nice cool contrast.

Polar Bear from front

Pompon's polar bear with the station's great clock in the background. The glass-fronted wall has walkways behind it like Grand Central Terminal in New York. You can see the blurred images of people crossing.

A Few Final Iconic Scenes

Place de la Concorde

Place de la Concorde. The sky was overcast and the gold leaf on the Luxor Obelisk stood out. (There are lane markings here, but they're very subtle.) To the left of the obelisk is the Hôtel de Crillon. There, in 1778, King Louis XVI and Benjamin Franklin signed the Treaty of Friendship between France and the American colonies.

Eiffel Tower and Pont Alexandre III

Hey, the Eiffel Tower. Fancy seeing that. The very ornate bridge is Pont Alexandre III.

Eiffel Tower and Assemblée Nationale

A view of the river with the Eiffel Tower in the background. The Assemblée Nationale (last seen from far away Montmartre) is on the left.

Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe.
