THE U.S. NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS HAS RECENTLY MADE A SERIES OF CA LIBRATION SERVICES AVAILABLE TO THE INDUSTRIAL RADIATION COMMUNITY AND TO USERS OF LARGE SOURCES OF GAMMA RAYS, X RAYS, AND ELECTRONS. THES E CALIBRATIONS CONTRIBUTE TO STANDARDIZING THE MEASUREMENT OF LARGE AB SORBED DOSES OF IONIZING RADIATION (10-10E06 GY), OVER THE ENERGY RANG E OF INTEREST IN RADIATION PROCESSING (O.1 - 10 MEV). OWING TO THE PR ACTICAL USE OF A WIDE VARIETY OF DOSIMETRY SYSTEMS FOR THE MANY INDUST RIAL APPLICATIONS, SPECIAL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERED IN DEVELOPIN G PROPER CALIBRATION PROCEDURES AND SELECTING TRANSFER INSTRUMENTS THA T SUPPLY TRACEABILITY TO PRIMARY RADIATION MEASUREMENT STANDARDS, FOR EXAMPLE, ABSORBED DOSE MEASUREMENTS BY CALORIMETRY. STANDARDIZED MEAS UREMENT PROCEDURES INVOLVE THE USE OF A LARGE CALIBRATED COBALT-60 GAM MA-RAY SOURCE AT NBS, FOR WHICH THE DOSE RATE HAS BEEN DETERMINED CALO RIMETRICALLY. THIS SOURCE IS USED TO CALIBRATE THE RESPONSE OF A RELA TIVELY ACCURATE AND REPRODUCIBLE DOSE METER, NAMELY, A RADIOCHROMIC DY E FILM COVERING THE DOSE RANGES OF INTEREST IN RADIATION PROCESSING. BECAUSE OF THE RUGGEDNESS AND STABILITY OF THIS DOSE METER AND THE ABS ENCE OF DOSE RATE DEPENDENCE OF ITS RESPONSE, IT CAN BE USED AS A ROUT INE TRANSFER INSTRUMENT FOR POSTAL DOSE INTERCOMPARISONS AND TO DETERM INE ABSORBED DOSE RATES FROM INDUSTRIAL RADIATION SOURCES, MEASURE DOS E DISTRIBUTIONS, AND CALIBRATE OTHER DOSIMETRY SYSTEMS FOR USE ON A PR ODUCTION LINE OR IN COMMISSIONING A NEW RADIATION PROCESS.
