EXPERIENCE SUMMARYComputer Data Systems, Inc., Rockville, MD- Systems Development SpecialistAugust 1996 to present Ms. Kaplan is currently assigned to the Technology Integration Division, Business and Systems Engineering Office (BSEO) as a Systems Development Specialist. Her primary position is the internet/intranet expert on the team. In addition, she participates on a team to administer development and test environments for CDSI's support to multiple customers, including the General Services Administration, Public Buildings Service (GSA/PBS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and commercial firms. Responsible for assisting with network maintenance (Novell Netware 3.x/4.x, Windows NT 3.51/4.0, MS Office, Netscape Navigator, Web Software, various development tools and utilities); server support (Development Servers, Application Server, Oracle Servers, cc:Mail Server, Lotus Notes Server, MapInfo GIS Server, Web Servers, Test Servers, Comunications Server, and Sequent SE5000 data warehouse); and office automation support (MS Office, WordPerfect, cc:Mail, Netscape 2.0/3.0 and Internet Explorer 3.01, Internet Exchange for cc:Mail GateWay, TCP/IP). Ms. Kaplan is involved in end-user support (100 users) and equipment troubleshooting (130 nodes) in a Novell Netware 4.1 LAN environment. Ms. Kaplan is an accomplished web developer. She has worked on web design projects for a variety of clients including the U.S. General Services Administration, Public Buildings Service (GSA/PBS) Project, the National Institutes of Health, and the California Society for Biomedical Research. She also served as lead developer for CDSI's web site. Responsibilities have included hardware/software requirements analysis and definition; creating documentation about web site design and maintenance; designing, coding, and maintaining web sites; and integrating web sites with Oracle databases. She is also tasked with the administration of three Windows NT Web servers and researching new techniques and technologies in Web design. Ms. Kaplan helped write and present a seminar to the California Society for Biomedical Research on web page design with an emphasis on how to best leverage the web to target specific audiences. She has also written and presented technical seminars on HTML and JavaScript coding internally at CDSI. In an assignment for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Ms. Kaplan wrote Perl scripts designed to take information from both a Mathematica program and customer input (via a Java and HTML web interface), check data integrity, and place the processed information into an Oracle database. Ms. Kaplan also acts in an advisory capacity to other CDSI web developers and has contributed technical information for proposal work. Additionally, she researched and co-authored "Web Design Guidelines," a document, adopted by the CDSI Web Council, detailing guidelines for the design, creation, and maintenance of SEI/CMM level 2 compliant web sites. As a resource to web development at CDSI, Ms. Kaplan also submitted a proposal to direct the growth of Web and Lotus Notes development. This involved researching popular combinations of software and hardware used in Web development, anticipating areas of future growth and client demand, and recommending developmental tools. Ms. Kaplan also participated in the preparation of a web development white paper for the PBS that focused on HTML, coding standards, correct use policy, and security. She also helped prepare a web-based, automated web development demo for FOSE '97 and staffed CDSI's booth at the show. Hood College, Frederick, MD- Teaching AssistantMay 1998 - August 1998 Concurrent with CDSI employment, Ms. Kaplan served as a graduate assistant to the WWW Programming class. Responsibilities included tutoring students, reviewing and developing assignments, assisting with the lecture notes, and developing teaching aids for the course. Washington College, Chestertown, MD - Lab Assistant and Web Design InternSeptember 1993 to August 1996 Ms. Kaplan supported Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers networked with AppleTalk, MacTCP, and TCP/IP; systems supported included Macintosh System 6 and 7, Windows 3.1 and 3.11, and Windows 95. Ms. Kaplan designed, implemented, and maintained pages for the Washington College web site. Other duties included technical writing to support IBM and Macintosh software, development of a series of setup diskettes and instructions for connecting IBM-compatible computers to the campus LAN via dial-up modem, development of comparative and instructional guides for various software packages, and training faculty and student lab assistants in the use of computers. Washington College, Chestertown, MD- Features Editor and Column WriterConcurrent with the above tasks, Ms. Kaplan served as Features Editor for the Washington College Elm (the student newspaper). Responsibilities included managing student writers and assigning articles. She also proofread articles, designed the layout for the Features section of the newspaper, and assigned photo coverage of articles. A further duty included writing articles as needed. Ms. Kaplan also wrote a bi-weekly column on the Internet entitled "NetSurfing." This included researching and reviewing new technologies, programs, web page design techniques, and policy decisions at Washington College.
