The cairn to Tranter's memory was unveiled on 23 November 2000, the 91st anniversary of his birth. It is built of East Lothian stone, mortared, rectangular in section and tapering toward a narrower top. It is about four feet high and is built on a cobbled base surrounded by grass. It sits at the edge of the marshes of Aberlady Bay beside the little car park just to the west of the 'Footbridge to Enchantment'. The bronze plaque on the cairn is inscribed with the text taken from his 1991 novel, Crusader as shown below :
