Song Information:

actual time
S. Andrews, P. Smith, B. Derrick, T. Snyder

This instrumental was the last new ATAXIA song before Phil and Ken moved and the band mutated into actual time. Scott wrote the 5:4 intro and verse and mated them with Phil's syncopated 6:8 theme and variation. Brad and Tom wrote the verse breaks to emphasize yet another rhythmic division. The title is from a Twilight Zone episode and connotates the rhythmic intricacies in this song and in all of our music.

accidental unison
S. Andrews, B. Derrick, T. Snyder

Brad wrote the main 6:4 rhythm, Scott wrote the melody and the 9:8 bridge, and Tom wrote the syncopated bassline in the third verse. The guitar solo is two separately improvised leads layered over one another. Brad, on the resulting combined solo: "My only regret is the accidental unison."

crank
B. Derrick

Brad wrote crank years ago around a minimalist rhythmic concept of long and short note/rest values in groups of 2, 3, 4, and 3. The improvised guitar solo quotes a bassline from Steve Coleman and Five Elements.

misery of mastery
S. Andrews, P. Smith, B. Derrick, T. Snyder

This is an old ATAXIA tune, and the title is from Ken Seligmann's lost lyrics. Scott wrote the basic riffs in 5:4, and Brad accented the syncopations by inserting the rests in the intro. Phil wrote the polymetric bassline at the end of the bridge section, and Tom wrote a polymetric bassline for the intro.

frame shift
B. Derrick, S. Andrews

Brad wrote all the rhythms for this tune. Scott wrote the melodies, including the verse pattern of 4 ascending chords over the triplet rhythm. The second riff is rhythmically constant although the drums change from 12:8 to 4:4, shifting the rhythmic frame of reference as the riff stays the same.
