The scene was outdoors at Marshall Mountain, a local ski area just outside of town, at a festival put on by a couple of local crazies, and on a Tuesday no less. Five bands played, starting with Cold Mountain Rythym Band (local) followed by Larry Keel and his wife (who were flown out from Virginia for the show), the Yonder Mountain String Band (on tour with LoS), the Tony Furtado Band (who ripped it up before a packed and bouncing crowd at a local bar the night before) and then Salmon. Due to a late start, the Yonder Mountain boys were limited to about 40 minutes but Drew and Vince came out to help on a spirited Polka on the Banjo! By the time that Tony was half way through his set, the sun had gone down, and it was getting mighty cold. The best way to stay warm was to dance and EVERYBODY did. A bundled up Leftover Salmon came on around 8:50 and promptly proceeded to tear it up, opening with Neil Young's Are You Ready for the Country (have they ever played that one before?). Here's the setlist with comments and guests in parentheses: Are You Ready for the Country (big time smiles from the band and crowd) Breakin' Through (we called bullshit on Vince trying to convince us that it was Mark's Birthday) Dance on Your Head Highway Song Troubled Times (with Tony Furtado and Ross Martin from Tony's band on guitar) I Can't Dance (Steve Goodman song with Tony and Ross) Five Alive (with Larry Keel) Midnight Blues (with Larry Keel) Instrumental with just Drew, Larry, and Mark Mama Boulet (featuring seamless rotation of the Apt Q258 and Tony Furtado's drummer on the drum solo - they were having a lot of fun with that!) Rankin Full Stop (big time dancing rage) Can't You Hear Me Calling>High on a Mountaintop>Can't You Hear Me Calling (with Jeff Austin of the Yonder Mountain String Band for the rest of the show) Y'all Come Blister in the Sun! (with Vince's Get a Job rap - "is that all your gonna do, get stoned and watch Andy Griffith reruns?....uh yeah!....Get a Job!") Ain't Gonna Work Tomorrow Walkin Cane 9 lb Hammer (with Tony, Ross, Jeff, Larry, and Tony's drummer sittin in on Jeff' kit) Encore 1: Pasta on the Mountain! Encore 2: Up on the Hill Boogie No set break, no wake 'n bake, just two and a half hours of slamgrass on a very chilly evening. I don't know how they picked, it was so cold. Drew was taking shots of Crown Royal throughout the evening, I'm sure that helped. The stuffed chicken on the front of the stage got lots of comments from the bands, especially Jeff Austin and Vince - this may someday be known as the "Chicken show". I was pissed that the chicken never got a solo though. A sidenote: a couple of the local promoters in attendance were real impressed with the Yonder Mountain String Band. I'm going to try to get a little competition going between promoters for their return trip through Montana later in the year.
