The Leftover dudes picking up a storm at Denver's new Fillmore NYE December 1999!
Looks like the Hokey-Pokey Parade through the streets of Denver just before the Gendarmes showed up with dozens of Black-and-Whites and a spotlight-equipped helo to quell the fun!
Here's a shot to show that Denver's Finest were NOT really bad guys -- he's flashing Eric a peace sign! It's just that they ALL had to be on duty on NYE and had to be prepared to deal with a bunch of terrorists trying to blow up something. By the time the Hokey-Pokey got all wound up, the cops figured that since nothing ELSE was going on, they'd ALL come out to check out the fun...
Here's what Bob Troutman had to say about the NYE Salmon show on the Leftover List:
Date: Mon, 03 Jan 2000 12:37:20 PST From: "Bob Troutman" <btroutman@hotmail.com> To: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" <leftover@lists.colorado.edu> Subject: millenium review...such as it is! A quick rundown of the Millenium show since I haven't seen one posted. The boys (sans Jeff at first) started out right on schedule at six with an acoustic set. I didn't keep a setlist but I remember that they started out with Y'all Come and Carnival followed by High on a Mountaintop. This set also included Five Alive and Just Before the Evening, oh yeah and Lovin' in my Baby's Eyes with Vince on lead vocal. These acoustic songs sounded great although I'm not sure how the tapes'll sound because they used vocal mikes but not instrument mikes. I think Jeff came out about halfway through the set for some quiet percussion. The Tony Furtado Band was up next and delivered their usual good set (I think I've seen 'em four or five times in the last year). Peter Rowan started out solo with Dust Bowl Children and Tumbleweed. Then Drew came out for a tune or two followed by Tye on his acoustic bass (which he played during the opening set) and eventually Jeff joined in. Standout songs included Panama Red and Wake Me in the New World. They finished the set with Midnight Moonlight. Leftover Sam'nJohn was up next with John on bass instead of Tye. This set was a smoker and the musical highlight of the night for me. Of course the imbibing was starting to take effect so I don't remember many of the toones. I think Sam started out on electric guitar but played mostly mando and fiddle. I do remember One More Love Song from the Newgrass Revival repertoire as well as Sam's usual Mannish Boy>Sailing Shoes>Crossroads medley. Next up, a pure Salmon set which started with Breakin Though and included a number of songs appropriate for the evening including Nothing But Time. They were eventually joined by Sam and John if I remember correctly. Then a wild parade with sax and clarinet cruised around the floor til midnight. The first song after midnight was Reach, another Newgrass tune. After that, the only song I remember being played was the Free Mexican Airforce which was a fun clusterpluck. I don't remember what time they played 'til. You know, a good reporter doesn't drink…but who said I was a good reporter! All in all it was a great time. The ride back to my friend's house on the bus is another story! Thanks to Bert who sent miracle tapes to me and cdub through his buddies Guy and Dave! Sorry I couldn't hook up with Garrett Brown and Scott Dahm but that's how it goes. Montana Bob Troutman (less than three weeks to my next LoS show here in Missoula - eat your hearts out east coasters!)And here's what Chris, aka Cdub, had to say about the NYE Salmon show on the Leftover List:
Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 11:47:21 -0600 From: <cdubbydub@juno.com> To: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" <leftover@lists.colorado.edu> Subject: NYE Ok....this may be too much.... haha But I am listening to my tapes of Salmon's set...so far so good. And thought I would give you the setlist to the first set! The set was about 60 mins...... The Other Side High Five Nothing But Time Gonna Have A Party It's Your World Rivers Rising Mama Boulet Coming At You w/ Y2K...(kind of a rap style....a friend that was with me said he had heard the song on the radio) One More Love Song> 1999> Celebrate> Stingray Great set.......Highlights for me in retrospect and on tape :) were the awesome Nothing But Time. I love listenig to Drew sing this song and was glad they did this one. The River's Rising was smoking. But the real treat of this set is when Sam Bush and John Cowan join the boys for One More Love Song. For those of you who haven't heard Stingray before...you should check out some Sam Bush! These guys were really putting on a magical show. With the parade coming...which was full of all kinds of WACKINESS. Crazy costumed characters...a giant alien, buzzard, chicken, genie, toy soldier, civil war officers, baby new year, Father Time, Elvis, a huge robot, a chinese dragon....and many more......all kinds of freaks parading around counting in the new millennium. Craziness everywhere you looked. The parade makes it way to the stage for the countdown. 2 mins left people......Tye is funkin' it up with Apt. Q-258...there are also some horn players on stage right now gettin it! They were in the parade as well. I minute left.....Happy New Year!.... Auld Lane Syne with everyone on stage....... OK...people its time for me to shower. I just had to listen to the show! I will report on the second set a little later. I know my tapes for the second set have a few dropouts due to some people's carlessness in the tapers area. Spilt beer on battery pack is NOT GOOD! Not for batteries, not for tapes...and not for the people who listen to the show later... :P Ok...I have to tell you set 2 opens with a kick a$$ REACH.....damn...which just cut.......Oh well....... But this song is outta this world. New Grass Revival...vibe with John Cowan wailing ! Man...... I will be getting clean copies of this as soon as I can. Gotta spread this one quick........ -------------------------------------- Ok......folks....how ya doin today? I'm Pheelin Phine over here! Just got through listening to the second set. And thought I would post the details. ~AULD LANE SYNE~ Reach (NGR) Euphoria (w/ Horns) Green Thing> Whiskey Before Breakfast Free Mexican Airforce (W/ Peter Rowan) No Woman No Cry ( W/ Sam, Peter, John) Fly Through The Country (NGR)> Midnight Rider> Fly Through The Country Breakin Through Doin My Time ( P. Rowan does a verse as well )> Back To Ol' Kentucky> Celebrate Reprise Encore: Better Sam seemed to be out on the stage quite a bit the second set. And I know Johnny C was out there just as much. The Free Mexican Airforce was perfect.....it made me think about a present for Vince I had seen before the show! :P The whole second set is just amazing. Leftover Salmon with Peter Rowan, Sam Bush and John Cowan. I hope to soon be able to spread this show. I am in the process of looking for an audience tape as I recorded fromthe SBD. I would just like to compare and have all of the parade on tape. My copy has dropouts during Reach. Only one song but I have to get a clean copy of this. If there are any tapers on the list that were there please get in touch with me! There were not very many of us ...but it is worth a shot!
