"Leftover Salmon rocked the River Stage tonight at the Memphis in May Beale
St. Music Festival.... I met a few folks who saw LoS for the first time tonight,
and they were definitely impressed. ("amazing" was the word they used)"
<BrianJ102@aol.com>

[also about Memphis in May] "wow! leftover was fantastic yesterday!
i got there super early and was able to get in the front row....so close that vince
saw me doing some puffing and smiled real big down at me and my friend alison!
it was incredible, what a band." <UTWSPfan@aol.com>

"Well, I was a *tad* late to work today, but well worth it! Last night's LoS
show, at 5 Points Music Hall in Birmingham, AL was quite a treat. Gibb Droll
opened, never seen 'em before. They were quite talented, although their style is
not really my thing. I enjoyed several songs though, and there were some
pretty hot jams during a few numbers. Los took the stage somewhere around
11:15 or so. I didn't keep a setlist but here are some memories...

Set I started off with Paint It Black, I was pulling for something like this to
kick it off and was not disappointed. Carnival Time, Green Thing > Whiskey
and River's Rising followed (I think). I don't remember much after that, I know
Whispering Waters was in there, and that was as slow as it got in the first set,
which is not all that slow, really nice jam in that one. Hoodoo Bash(?) maybe
was in this set, maybe in the second I can't quite recall, but that is one cool
song I don't have on tape but have heard a couple of times live, I love the feel of
this song. The Green Thing > Whiskey got everyone dancin' and havin' a good
time, the crowd I thought was a little more laid back than last time at Zydeco's,
but not that they didn't seem to be having as good a time, just people were a
little less zealous about pushing close to the front and all that. Plenty of
dancing room all night!

Set II began with Better, and it couldn't have been! Sometime fairly early in
the set they began Space Cowboy, suprisingly at normal speed, and played the
whole thing (I think) without any lyric adlibbing from Vince, crowd sang along
(and supplied the whoo-whooo part) and then Vince began singing the first
verse from Takin' Care of Business and from then on into about 10 songs
without a break, Legalize It was next and then some others, in no particular
order, were Rocky Road Blues, I Know You Rider (real lyrics, not Momma
lyrics), Hot Corn/Cold Corn, Message To Rudy(?), Joe's Garage(!) complete with
both Mark and Drew taking a stab at that horrendous guitar solo lick that
anyone familiar with this Zappa album will recognize, and a few more that I
can't believe I don't remember, before ending triumphantly with a Space
Cowboy reprise at typical Salmon breakneck speed. Whew! I don't remember
any order after this, but I enjoyed Old Rounder, a typically incredible When The
Levee Breaks > Doin' My Time > When the Levee Breaks, a Hot Burrito
Breakdown, which Vince explained was about when you go to one of those 7-
11's and get a burrito and put it in the microwave and the plastic melts all into
the burrito, and then said maybe it was called Hot Burrito Meltdown, he didn't
know. He did say "Sir, your microwave is on fire" during the middle of it though,
I laughed. Also did Hotel Rocky Top, a treat for the bartenders I am sure, after
mentioning that the Eagles recently surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller for
best selling album of all time with their greatest hits compilation. My ass was
draggin' by the end of this set.

Encore was Zombie (good call, everyone pulled their last energy out to dance
hard for this one) and then Wake & Bake.

I don't remember where this occured, but at some point Mark did something
and Vince kinda stopped everything and accused him of thinking he was Ozzy
Osbourne, and then told Drew to show him how to do it, and then said Drew
didn't know how to do it either, before continuing whatever song that was.

Another great show from Leftover Salmon, left me thirsting for more. Happily
there are three more Salmon gigs in Alabama this month!"

[re the 5/4 show in Birmingham] "Oh my gosh!!!!! The boys were on in
full effect last night. They were going absolutely bananas. I had heard that
the recent shows were absolutely smoking the shows from the winter, but I
couldn't believe that they would be that much better. I heard one girl describe a
recent show that "blew my face off!!" What a heavy duty way to describe a
show!!! ...let's just say that this was about the most insane thing I've ever seen
at a show.Leftover Salmon or otherwise. So, a big thank you to all the boys in
the band. We loved it!! They also did the pretty rare "Hotel California" mutant
version of "Rocky Top" The show was nuts from start to finish."

"Just got back from New Orleans and saw some incredible music. First night in
town we caught the LoS show at Tipitinas and they were incredible. I hadn't
seen them in awhile so that made it all the sweeter. I know alot of the songs
played but couldn't tell you what order they were in. Maybe Marcie can help me
out. Anyway, I took some friends who had never seen LoS before and they were
hooked. I think they might go on tour with HORDE. "

"Just got in from the first night at Ziggy's. The boys played until 3:00 and
needless to say were incredible. I'll try to write more tomarrow, after some
sleep and round two." <milase00@wfu.edu>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"I had to leave about 2:30 - sorry I missed the end of what was one of the best
Salmon shows I've seen, very HIGH energy and lots of good times on stage for
Vince. Drew was his usual maniac self on all instruments, Mark was pickin
some great banjo leads, Dr. John Flowers and the Hypno Clambake Sax
player joined in for a few songs ( all rockin good ) Mike was solid on drums, and
Tye knows almost all the words to Euphoria - ...I know I'll always be proud to
say I was there for Ziggy's Rockin Tuesday Zuki Dog Givaway !"

"the show at Tip's was the best I've seen yet" <taz@nowhere.Net>

"For those of you that missed the last two nights in Winston-Salem, you
missed a good ol' time. I'm not a review writer or set list keeper, so I'll let
someone else give those to you, but both nights were INCREDIBLE, the boys
just keep getting better. The first night brought Dr. John Flowers, Mark from
Hypnotic Clambake, a "roots, rock, and reggae" run in honor of Ziggy's 7th
Anniversary, and of course the "zuki dog giveaway" to the stage. Last night
was all out jam, not quite as crazy as round one, but still quite amazing. The
energy level was high for both nights, one friend leaned over and said "I'm tired
as hell (it's exam week) but you just can't help feeding off the energy in this
place." Can't wait until Tampa on Saturday!" <milase00@wfu.edu>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Just joined this list after seeing the FAQ on rec.music.phish. I had seen a lot of
posts about LoS on r.m.p & r.m.gd and was passing through New York last
August when I saw in Time Out that the boyz were playing at the Wetlands.
By the way, this show was omitted on the setlists site mentioned in the FAQ.
Anyway, the Wetlands show was really great, much better than the 1 WSP or
3 Phish shows I've seen." <MSCHLAC@delphi.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[re Webster's Lake FEEESTIIIVAAAALLL!] "Webster's Lake was a
blast! ...Mark Vann got up and jammed with Jupitor Coyote for a while, and it
was really a pretty good little jam, by far the best part of the JC set...

I have never seen the boys so energetic before! They looked ready to explode
as they kicked off Better, and absolutely kicked ass! Paint It Black was
INTENSE, Drew was going nuts, head bobbing up and down and hair flying.
This was by far the most intense I had ever seen them, they were just busting
with energy. This continued the whole show, even Muddy Water and Bend in
the River was more upbeat than usual. After Carnival, Mark went over to
Vince and apparently called for a Funky Mt., and it was the right call, they just
jammed it like crazy. A dog got up on stage during this song and afterwards
Vince asked everyone if they liked that dog solo. During Corn the guest
keyboard player joined in, and while he wasn't as forward as Pete Sears on the
tapes I have, he definitely added a lot to some songs like River's Rising and
Boogie. He took a solo in a few songs. This Boogie was nuts, with Dr. Dan
doing a solo and then Drew going absolutely apeshit, he actually got down on
his knees and leaned back while soloing frenetically ala Michael J. Fox in Back
to the Future. I have never seen Drew so animated before, he was matching
Vince at jumping up and down and going crazy the whole show. Ask the Fish
was cool and spacey and Vince talked about the 500 lb. catfish in the lake back
there. The last song was awesome, Col. Bruce sang it, there was the keyboard
player, a String Cheese guy on guitar, one on washboard (Vince also switched
to washboard after a while), and one on drums. They jammed for a while and
looked like they were all having the time of their lives. I guess you could only
call this Col. Bruce and the Leftover Cheese Salmon Incident.

I'd say Salmon made some new fans last night.

"Last Saturday's show in Tampa marked the first time LoS played in the state
of Florida, and I assure you they will be welcomed back. Several of my friends
and I headed down there for some post exam relief and it was definently worth
the discustingly long drive for the show alone. They played as part of the
"Tropical Heatwave" festival, a benefit for a local radio station, in a section of
town called Ybor City. Basically, it's a street lined with clubs, bars and
resturants that is cut off to traffic on Friday and Saturday nights. The festival
was held on several different outside stages towards the outer edge of this strip.
We get there about half an hour before Leftover plays, listen to someone else
finish their set, and then join a drum circle that was starting up beside the
stage (it kept on increasing as time went by while the band set up- everyone
there got involved- crazy fun). Leftover hit the stage about 11:30 (sorry, I
don't have a setlist and its been a while so this will be kind of sketchy). The
crowd at first was pretty tame, most unfamiliar with LoS (at one point, Vince
asked "How many of you are expereincing Leftover Salmon for the first time?"
and 90% of the crowd screams), and the boys energy kind of reflected that.
However, as is usually the case, by about an hour into things, everyone was
having a great time, dancing like crazy. The boys kick out an incredible
"Rueben's Train" (my friend comments: "Where the hell did that come from?")
and it just heads uphill from there. Members of New Orleans Klezmer All-
Stars and a Zydeco band from Texas (?) join them for some jam... A great
time! It was so great to see so many people (so many *diverse* people I might
add) getting into LoS for the first time. It was an incredible experience. (Oh,
my roommate caught them for the first time that night as well- she swore she
wouldn't like it, but said she'd give it a try, and ended up having an awesome
time!)" <milase00@wfu.edu>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[re Telluride '97] "LoS! They stole the show though....I'd give you a
setlist, but I can't. They played hard, long, and late...not finishing until almost
2:00 I think! Sam played with them and had a blast, and we danced til the sun
came up." <jeff.stampes@Xilinx.COM>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"first night, after johnny cash's set, we went to this "little" production by the
zambiland orchestra at the sheridan opera house.....and what a number this
evening turned out to be! from 11pm until about 2:30am, every member of
leftover besides the drummer, plus SCI's fiddle/mandolin player, and other
random folks like tony furtado jammed out, with vince holding up
spontanaeous cue cards with phrases like "blues in G" or "ska" or "dead torso
stance" written on them.....all in all, in that whole span of 3+ hours, the group
only stopped once (for a break).......so needless to say, the whole entire
performance blew my mind especially since i was in the very front row where
vince was hanging out holding up the cards! plus, they finished the night with
hotel rocky top (which i heard at the famous fillmore concerts the other month)
and locomotive breath by jethro tull, since the flutist was so intense and
incredible." <Rain699077@aol.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"And that brings me to THE ZAMBILAND ORCHESTRA:

It included all 5 members of Leftover Salmon (it was Tye's brainchild). Vince
was directing the madness w/ posters that had instructions of them, he had a/b
50 of them, and the band did whatever he instructed. Other members included:
Jeff Sipe (Apt. Q-258), Tony Furtado, Baby Gramps, Roger North, Michael
Kang (of STring Cheese Incident), and literally a/b 15 different other people
througout the course of the evening. It started a/b 11pm in the Sheridan
Opera House. A lucky crowd of a/b 175 watched the sold out event. They took
a 30 min break in the middle, but besides that it lasted until 3am. Not
everyone was onstage at once, but would just wander on, jam, and then take off
for a while. they only did 4 songs: Hotel Rocky Top, Lively up Yourself, Time is
Free, and A Love Supreme (which quickly morphed into A Bud Supreme.)
Besides that it was just free form jamming. It can't be described unless you
were there. And i don't think that it will translate well to tape, but it was
magical inside! it was crazy......I hope everyone else had as much fun in
Telluride as I did. FESTIVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!!"
<ZU03570@UABDPO.DPO.UAB.EDU>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[more from Telluride...] "Finally the dance sensation of the evening took
the stage. Leftover Salmon, anything but, got the few laggards to their feet
and didn't let them down for two-and-a-half hours of Salmon tunes punctuated
by Salmon versions of When the Levee Breaks and Paint it Black."

[re Opening for Blues Traveler at Red Rocks on July 3] "Hey Hey!
Just got back from a great show at that most incredible of venues, Red Rocks!
Since i was expecting about 45 minutes, maybe an hour, from the boys, i was
surprised when they went on for an hour and twenty minutes! And a fun time
it was! ...The boys tore the place up! Very high-spirited set. Highlights for me
were Doin' My Time and Rueben's Train. During Doin' Drew seemed to be
dragging a bit during his solo, then out of nowhere he just cranks it up, starts
his manic head-bobbing, and got everyone going nuts! And Rueben's was just
as intense as it always is!

The Boys put on one hell of an opening act show last night! But when do they
ever let us down?! ...highlights included a Hey Joe that got most everyone
saying a collective "WOW!" Ask the Fish was very incredible! Great low bass
fish sounds from Tye, and Mark had the rubber fish! By Hot Corn, a heavy
marshmallow fight was taking place, and many of the white puffballs
eventually made it onto the stage. Vince made a reference to the
Marshmallow Cream Fest, or something or other in one of the songs. By
Whisperin' Waters, i would say that maybe close to 3/4 of the place was on its
feet despite a quick little rainstorm. When they broke into Rocky Mountain
Way, everyone was going pretty well nuts! And the boys decided to close the
show rockin' and rollin' with Lick It. I know they definitely had more than a few
converts last night! I met one woman who is going to be writing up a review of
the shows for Relix magazine and i know she's gonna speak positively about
LoS!" <gfellman@du.edu>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[re HSMY '97] "It was around 12:15 that the stage was graced by
Leftover Salmon. Yee-Haw we were ready! The band looked as though they
had been partyin' as hard as we had (especially Mark) but they were having a
ball (so were we). It seemed all of a sudden the Festival kicked into High
Gear... the guys were very excited to be in the High Sierra's & played with alot
of energy. I didnt recognize the song they opened up with, but i'm hooked on it.
It's an up-tempo song almost sounds like Drew might be saying "maggot" in a
key verse of the song & theres a line about a banjo on his knee (or something?).
Other than that, here's the setlis:

(?), Better, Top of the Word, Squirell Heads, Breakin Through*, Redneck
Freind*, This Old Rounder!*, 420 Polka*, High Sierra Bound*#, Good
Enough(?)*#, Ask the Fish*%-> Drums*%-> Bosco Stumble*%, Shape Im In*%

*- w/ Sally Van Meter
#- w/ Jim Page
%- w/ Everyonee!!!

Ok, everone is a quit open here, at one point i counted 13 people on stage. 5
guys from the band, Sally, Sax & Fiddler from HypClam., Tony Furtado, String
Cheese's Drummer, Trillian Greens Flute player, ?Accordian player,
?Harmonica Player. Ay-yi-yi, the Ask the Fish they played is by far the
trippiest i've ever heard. At one point Vince was conducting everyone on the
stage like a composer... everyone would change their dynamics accordingly & it
sounded wicked. Trillian Greens Flute played added alot, he's very talented.
Or mabye it was the way he pranced around the stage like a praying-mantis
. Shape I'm In was a fitting encore cause boy howdy we didnt know
what kinda shape the guys were in. Mark was full of funny comments at one
time he said something like "ya'll better not laugh at us tommorow". We all
really had a blast though, the Festival had taken off to a new level!

...Around 8:15 Salmon hit the stage to a very eager crowd. Most of the people
had headed back home, so there was alot more room to boogie. Of course the
guys once again played a mind blowing, energy filled show that left me with a
smile ear to ear which i still cant wipe off my face 2 days later. The opened
with Hotel Rocky Top, other songs i recall are Honky Tonk woman, Muddy
Water, Bend inthe River, the Bridge, High on a MTn Top, Pasta Encore!
Spoonman sat in on Funky Mtn Fogdown & the Spirit.... the stage had SO
MUCH enery during the Fogdown it was amazing. Spoonman stood in the
middle of the stage slapping the spoons across his legs, torso, chest & face
while Mark/Vince/Drew all stood around him freaking out with the that "too
much fun" look on their faces. Jim Page came out & made up some more
lyrice for another made up song, these lyrics seemed a bit more crafty that the
circus tents the night before." <mansolab@earthlink.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[and more...] "Sunday night, the main event... LoS on the main stage! I
had a much better time... opted for the sbd patch after the fiasco in the tent
the night before. I got patched, the boys came on stage, hit record and my deck
started flashing "no input"! The guy I patched outta had signal but had given
me and another guy a digital Y cable that wasn't passing the signal on to me.
Argh! Several people came outta me and we were all freaking out... I finally
found a deck to come out of by the second tune. From that point on I had a ball!
We had several blankets spread out next to the wide path behind the sbd w/
plenty of dancing room. The boys seemed much tighter than the night before.
Some of thier slower tunes... "Just Before The Evening" I think was one of 'em,
had ripping jams in the middle that blew me away. The Funky Mtn Fogdown w/
Artis the Spoonman was incredible. During Euphoria some guy (Whiz?) got up
on stage and Vince baptized him with a huge 1 gallon jar of mayonaise. It was
great... this guy was rubbing it all over his body, laying in it while spinning
around on the stage and was throwing handfuls of it out in the crowd. He
hugged Vince and Drew w/ the mayo all over him and at the end of the song did
a stage dive out into the crowd. Too much fun!" <gibbons_c@annex.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"My name's Mike Lerman, writing from the fine city of Chicago, where we
have been graced with some fine Salmon performances over the years.
Actually, my Salmon experience has been a real traveling phenomenon,
having seen shows in Portland & Eugene, OR; Telluride & Boulder, CO; Ann
Arbor, MI & Columbus, OH; Burlington, VT; Winston-Salem and Ashevile, NC;
Charlottesville, VA; Athens, GA...WOW!! Seeing these guys in as many states
as possible is HIGHLY recommended, sez the Mayor :)

Just got back from the H.O.R.D.E. fest in Indiana, at Deer Creek, and it was a
blast! Salmon was packing them in over at the side stage, it was really
crowded! The only problem was that their show was so short, they had to quit
just when things were heating up. But since there are so many bands
scheduled, there is really no choice. The band headed over to jam with Colonel
Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners for a while at the Workshop tent, then
they sat down at the CD tent to sign autographs! The highlight of the evening
for me was accompanying Mark on the bus to take a close look at their
luxurious quarters...then Vince, Mark, Drew, Jeff and Tye decided to sit down
next to the bus and have a little jam session with the guys from Morphine!
This was very laid-back and a whole lot of fun. They seem to enjoy having so
many musicians around them on the H.O.R.D.E. tour, with all sorts of new
friendships apparently forming." <Lerdawg@aol.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[re Great Woods HORDE] "It may have been my slow watch, but I
think the boys hit the stage a few minutes early. IMHO, Zombie Jamboree is a
perfect opener-the calypso beat has the power to turn heads and shake bones,
and it certainly did that last night...

Incidentally, it was
Jeff Stipe's (?) birthday. I'll go on record as saying he was
fantastic. Hard to judge somebody in thirty minutes, but he laid
down a fierce beat with lots of nice sounding fills and rolls.

Mark and Tye were also in excellent form, and the bass was revved up nicely
in the mix! Drew in typical fantastic form, and Vince seemed extra cranked
(lots of high kicks, bouncing, and general silliness).

After the set, I wandered away to get a drink, only to return and find Tye and
Jeff jamming with Col. Bruce and ARU keyboardist (forgot name) on the tiny
"Culture Stage"!!! Minutes later, Mark and Vince (_and_ Drew? can't
remember ;) joined in, and the whole thing turned into a 20+ minute jam--
>meltdown. There was some serious wackiness going on up there, stuff which I
can't find the words to describe right now. Suffice it to say that it was a very
nice bonus - after seeing the previous posts about the Morphine jam, I was
afraid we missed all the fun, but no complaints now.

Although it's impossible to compare 50 minutes of music with the standard
2.5+ hours we've come to expect, the spirit and energy present last night was
perhaps the best I've seen yet." <eschmitt@mediaone.net>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Last nights show in Raleigh, NC at Lake Boone Country Club was hot in more
ways than one. The show was excellent and they rocked out more than I
remember from other shows I've seen. The club was also very HOT and
HUMID.

Jeff Sipe is a fantastic drummer and could have added to the "rock out" time
(or maybe they're just tired of those 30 minute HORDE sets and wanted to let
it loose.) I'm not sure if the moisture on the floor at the end of the show was
from beer or sweat ;-)" <goheels@mindspring.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

[A report from the Flood Zone...] "Hey guys. What a night we had on
Wednesday! The boys were sooooo happy to be able to play more than 1/2 hr.,
and we were ready for them to kick it all night. We got to the venue about 9:45
and breathed a sigh of relief as we saw only a small number of people milling
about in front of the place. I didn't think the boys would sell the place out, but I
had this nagging fear in the back of my head that we would show up at the last
minute and be turned away at the door. We parked a little off from the venue
and had a little pre-show session in the car which sent us walking to the venue
with a slight weave in our steps. The perfect groove for a Salmon show,
IMNSHO. I had one Panic virgin with me, and two Salmon newbies who had
each seen a show. There was one other guy I tried to get out there, but he was
too stubborn. I even offered to refund him money if he didn't like it. Still
couldn't do it. I made sure he knew that when he finally does see these guys, he
would be kicking himself for a couple days afterwards remembering that he
skipped getting to see them for $10 in town.

The crowd was very sparse, so we headed up front and positioned ourselves
right in front of Mark. Actually, we were directly in front of the brick, to be
more exact. I was telling my Salmon virgin friend that Mark plays a mean
brick. He looked at me pretty funny 'til I told him I was just kidding. After
Fishman and his vacuum, just about anything is possible there days. After
only a couple minutes, I looked around to find that most of the crowd had
moved closer to the stage and were starting to focus their attention to the
stage. Finally the boys hit the stage with grins on everybody's face. Vince gave
the brick a nice introduction. He said they picked it up in Columbus when they
were up there playing with Ekoostik Hookah. Any of you at this show
remember anything about a brick? It actually looked like a big Pez they way it
was sitting on the stool. I wanted to tell Vince that to see if he would make
anything of it. Anyway, the brick was featured many, many times throughout
the night. Mark even used his mic to let the brick take a quick solo. It was
great watching Mark hold the mic up to the brick while members of the band
made faces to show they really liked what the brick was doing. True Salmon
wackiness at its best.

Kicking things off with the Green Thing had me grooving hard from the get-go.
Unfortunately, a friend came up with a beer for me sometime toward the
beginning of the show, and a flying elbow smacked it out of his hand and spewed
most of it all over the floor making a nice puddle. I felt kinda guilty and almost
headed for the bar for a rag, but instead decided just to keep dancing in the
puddle, take on the risk of busting my butt myself, and try and make the best
of it. We may have gotten the girl dancing beside us since she bailed soon after,
but I don't know. I certainly hope not. Anyway, the whole Green Thing >
Waterfall series was great. Zombie was super upbeat and kept the placing
hopping. Actually, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of dancing. Several folks
were watching intently, so I knew they were enjoying themselves. I just don't
understand how these folks can hold still like that when the Salmon are kicking
it. Doin' My Time was absolutely huge. The peak they brought that jam to
was completely stunning. I was hoping for a Levee in the middle there, but no
luck there. By this time, the band was going absolutely berserk! Everybody
was jumping up and down and Vince was strutting all over the stage. All that
pent up energy from the HORDE shows seemed to be exploding out of the band
before our very eyes. Corn was a great time. Being right in front of Mark, I
was sorta listening to what he was saying. At one point, I distinctly heard a
"What the hell's a jimmiejohn" from him. Vince led the room in a very
organized "Hot!" "Corn! Dance On Your Head was the first big treat for me.
I've got in on a couple tapes, but seeing it live was too much fun. I love that
slick, Cajun groove.

Baby Hold On was the surprise jam of the night for me. Usually this one slows
things down a little too much for me, but somehow, Drew managed to rock on
this one. I couldn't believe it. Can't wait to hear it again. 70's Lick was
another big surprise. It wasn't as long and tight as the one on Ask the Fish,
but I'd never heard it anywhere else, so I wasn't even sure they did it anymore.
I *love* Mama Boulet. Another of those slick, Cajun grooves that gets my
shakin' it hard. Everybody was loving the 4:20 Polka! Man, they jammed this
one hard, hard, hard. Before leaving, a friend asked me to pass on a Whispering
Waters request for him, so being so close to the stage, I was thinking about
calling it out. I think I'd been freaking hard enough that I had the band's
attention. Well, I think I must've gotten the request out there through ESP,
'cause the very next song was Whispering Waters. That one was for you, Pete.
Nice fat Waters jam. I've really gotten hooked on that tune a lot. The Better
closer sent everyone to setbreak a little outta breath. After Vince introduced
the tune, I warned my friend to go ahead and kick it into high gear for this one.
As they tore into it, you should've seen the smile that split his face as he
started dancing like a maniac. That set of Salmon had him hook, line, and
sinker.

By setbreak, the beer puddle I was dancing in had dried up and just left the
floor a little sticky. I figure that helps with better traction during dancing. I
love setbreak at clubs. We got to go outside and catch a little air away from all
the smokiness an noise. It's too bad a couple others friends were out-of-town
because they live in the building across the street from the Flood Zone.
Would've been nice to shoot up there for a little privacy. Oh well. They're
gonna be kicking themselves over this one. Finally met fellow Panic/Salmon
fan Chris Nystrom outside briefly. This Internet thing is cool, but meeting
people face-to-face is the best part. After that you seem to see them at shows
all the time. Also ran into a friend from Blacksburg outside I hadn't seen in a
while. Took a little walk to reset things for set 2 and chat a little with more
Richmond friends I ran into outside. Jason, the Salmon virgin, was talking up
Salmon like crazy. He ran into some other friends of his on the street and was
trying to get them to come back for set 2. There definitely was gonna be
another $10 worth of music to come out of those Salmon, that was for sure.

As we settled back into the club and the boys hit the stage, I noticed a guest on
mandolin and assumed he must be a McGraw Gap boy. Never actually seen
them, so I didn't know for sure. Later, Vince introduced him as "Danny Nicely,
the man with the prettiest name is show business," as he usually seems to be
introduced. Ask the Fish had a long, super psychedelic intro. Good version that
had more people grooving than there were first set. Since Danny was up there
on mandolin, Drew switched over to the fiddle. He went absolutely ballistic on
that thing during the Ask the Fish jam. Crazy, crazy stuff. With a set opener
like that, I was really looking forward to seeing what came next. Fastest Song
was there. Great version of Bend in the River with Danny Nicely adding some
sweet mandolin and backing vocals. Boogie had everybody doing just that.
Another song I love for its romping groove at breakneck speed. Breaking
Through showcased Drew's vocals very well. I wasn't familiar with Troubled
Times, so I spent a lot of that tune figuring out what it was. Same for Midnight
Blues, if that's what it's called. I remember them singing about the blues
tonight or something like that, so I'm just guessing. Never remember actually
hearing that phrase. I really look forward to hearing these again when I find
copies of the show.

Booboo brought the fast groove back to everybody's feet. Highway Song was
so nice. I can't get enough of Drew's vocals. Being a mountain boy myself, I
love that higher tenor sound. Danger Man was another treat that I've only got
on one tape, I believe. I was hoping for more off the wall songs like this, but we
didn't really get that many. Instead Salmon just kicked the crap out of their
usual tunes. Gotta hate that. Anyway, my two guitarist friends had been
talking about Hey Joe all day. This was the one they really wanted to see, so
when it kicked it, I had almost as much fun watching them as I did the band.
Great version, and I believe Danny Nicely joined in again. I can't remember if
he played on anything else. I loved Euphoria. When the groove peaks and
everyone calls out "Euphoria!" I feel just that. Jokester caught me a little off
guard that late in the set. I used to seeing it early on with Carnival Time and
songs like that. Certainly didn't hamper my enjoyment of the tune. I love the
steel drums effect that Drew uses on the mando for this one. The River's Risin'
that closed the show was perfect. This and Valley of the Full Moon are
probably my two favorite slamgrass tunes. At the break before the fast
ending, the crowd was squalling like it was the end of the show. I just stood
there and waited......1 2 3 4 and slam back into the jam. I love that. Orgasmic
ending to the show.

The band returned to the stage with the plastic Salmon and did some of those
crazy noises with it. I don't believe they brought it out in Ask the Fish, so
maybe they were just trying to make up for that. I'd never heard Lick It
before, but there's no mistaking that tune. Interesting lyrics. When they got
to "Suck It!" and "Smoke It!" there were smiles all around. The inevitable
Wake and Bake was great! We got most of the lyrics, and the crowd kept it
going for a while after the band left the stage. We were trying to compete with
the house music, but they just kept turning it up. I kept squalling "Rise up!"
until I couldn't do it anymore. Great ending to the show. We hung around to
stare at all the fine women and chat a little with the band. They were all
coming out into the crowd and super friendly. I never know what to say right
after a show to band members, so I just shook a few hands and stood around.
Finally, we tore ourselves away and headed back to the house for some guitars
and munchies. I haven't had my ears ringing like that in a while. Whoever
commented about the volume was right on. It was loud! I took a hearing test
at work yesterday (1.5 days later), and I had a little drop in the higher
frequencies in my right ear. I'm pretty sure I was still reeling from the show. I
hope they don't make me rest. Oh well. Even if I did lose a little, it was still
worth that, the $10, and the day off from work, which I really needed the next
day to recover.

What a time. Can't wait for the boys to come back. See y'all out there next
time." <lgtsotr@earthlink.net>

"I just got back home from a long road trip to Raleigh to see the boys at the
Lake Boone Club and also see HORDE @ Charlotte. First let me say that I
drove 7 hours from Ashland, KY (my hometown) to stay w/ some friends and
see the boys in Raleigh, and let me just say it was well worth it. This was my
second Leftover show, but my first full length show and IT WAS SMOKIN'!!!!
The boys were on fire, and it was definately hot, both the show and the venue!
I bet I sweat off 10 pounds of sweat dancing to some fine music."

"I also attended Hookahville and we had a great time. This was my third
Hookahville and Leftover Salmon made it my favorite. I'd have to say one of
the most incredible things was when Drew, Vince and Mark came out and
played with Hookah on Keep in Time. They all just kept going back and forth
with Sweeney from Hookah and it seemed to last forever. I know of several
people camping around us who loved Leftover Salmon and had never heard of
them before. Personally, I thought they stole the show."

[re Hoodoo Bash] "Do you ever get that feeling at every Leftover
Salmon show you see that this is the best LoS show you've ever seen? Well i
think for me i have a winner! Yesterday the boys and a bunch of their friends
put on one hell of a show at the HooDoo Bash!

It was set at the Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, CO, the same place where they
have the annual Rockygrass Fest and Folk Fest. And what a setting! They
have this beautifully designed and built wooden stage, above which is a ying-
yang symbol made of two twisted mandolins! To the right of the stage is a little
river, and on the other side of it is a 60 foot cliff. Just a gorgeous setting to get
you in the right mood. You can even dance in the river if you want to,
something i highly recommend!

Anyway the show started off on the right foot with the Left Hand String Band's
first appearance in about three years according to Drew. Sam Bush sat in for
the entire set playing the mandolin. This set was damn fun with a lot of spunk
from the get-go.

...And finally the band we were all waiting for, Leftover Salmon put on a nearly
3 hour non-stop show with Sam Bush and many others!

My friend and i were gonna get a pool together betting on how many times
Vince would yell "FESTIVAL" throughout the day. Although we never did
organize the pool, we think the count was somewhere around 8!

Anyway, before any music was played Vince introduced the Brick and set him
right at the front of the stage. The set started out appropriately with "HooDoo
Bash" which was very fun. The Boogie just knocked me out! But then the
Rueben's Train! WOW! This has always been one of my favorite tunes but i
was just floored! And as if the jam wasn't big enough, in the middle Vince
reemerges from his usual Train disappearance with the Mayor McCheese! And
i had just been saying to a friend that the Mayor hasn't been around for a while!
How about it! He stayed on the front of the stage just next to the brick for the
remainder of the show.

The Funky Mtn was real interesting! It started out a slow but funky pace
which kinda baffled me. Of course after a few times through they kicked it into
high gear! There was even a little tease of "Elevator to the Moon," a Col. Bruce
Hampton tune, which surprised the hell out of me!

Let's see, what else. I thought Drew's and Sam's voices blended unbelievably
well! They sounded great together, especially on the couple tunes they did as a
duo. Before Mannish Boy they were doing windmills a la Pete Townsend and
Sam said something like "Pete Townsend wished he played mandolin!" The
whole Mannish-->Sailin'-->Crossroads combo was killer! And the Reach to end
it was insane! Sam kept pointing to different people for solos! Everyone had a
chance! They never left the stage before Rise Up was started. The chant went
on for maybe 10 minutes after the last person had left the stage. Very fun!

Some overall thoughts. Sam is the man! He seems like a very cool guy and fit
in well with the boys. You could tell they were all having a blast!

Regarding Apt. Q258, i've always been amazed by him! I'm a big Col. Bruce
fan and so i've heard plenty of the Apt. already. I was curious as to how he
would fit in but i never expected him to fit in so well! He sounded great with the
boys! What's so amazing about him is that he gets such a huge sound from
such a small kit. I believe he only has a snare, bass drum, hi-hat, hi tom, floor
tom, and two cymbals, but he makes it sound like he's two drummers on two
different kits! Wow!

If you haven't guessed it by now, it was one hell of a day! I hope they do
another festival like that next year!" <gfellman@du.edu>

"Just wanted to introduce myself as the newest member of this list. I'm only
recently gotten into Leftover salmon, but I saw them at the Vic Theater in
Chicago this weekend and they were AMAAAAAAAAZING!! "
<sarathys@ssd.comm.mot.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey everyone, I got to see Leftover Salmon at the Vic this Sunday, and was
thoroughly pleased and surprised to see Sugar Blue make an appearance in the
second set! I got there early, so I was first row, and I'll tell you this band
continues to impress me each time I hear them!" <pjohnso8@nd.edu>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Did anyone else see these shows. The boys were rockin and rolling up and
down Chicago. The first night was accompanied by Pete Sears on keyboards,
who did an excellent job. The band was totally in their element the second
night, with Pete Sears on keyboards, and Sugar Blue tearing up the old
harmonica. This was a night to remember." <LT420frenz@aol.com>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey all. Spoke to a friend who lives in Chicago. His first two Salmon shows
were the Vic shows, and he said he left soaked with sweat from dancing both
nights. I think he's totally hooked (pun intended). I talked them up as hard as
I could, but I think it took an actual show to really let him know what's up
about these boys. He said he heard a rumor that the boys would be out at a
Blues bar somewhere after the second night, so he went and checked it out. He
apparently ended up hanging out with Sugar Blue and the boys all night
bullshitting about this and that. Pretty cool for a first experience, eh?"
