DX ANNOUNCEMENTS

AFGHANISTAN, YA Peter, ON6TT, returned to Kabul to continue his work for the UN. He has been spotted already as YA/ON6TT/m on Nov 21. The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (Northern Alliance) issued the call YA5T to be used by Peter, ON6TT, Matts, SM7PKK, and Robert, S53R. Nobody knows by now if this license will be accepted by the DXCC Desk.

ANGOLA, D2 Vitor, D2/CT1FSC, is on the air from Luanda between Nov 21 and Dec 14. QSL via CT1FSC.

AUSTRAL ISLANDS, FO0, OC-050 Jon, WB8YJF (FO0SEV), and Leo, K8PYD (FO0FRY), will hit the airwaves from Rurutu Island in CW/RTTY from Dec 3-14. If they still find some space in their luggage they might take also a microphone with them... QSL via WB8YJF and K8PYD.

CHATHAM ISLAND, ZL7, OC-038 Hiro, JF1OCQ/W1VX/ZL1WY, will make a 6m DXpedition from Nov 30-Dec 5. He will listen especially for Europe and North America, try to listen to his beacon on 50.115 MHz. QSL via JF1OCQ, bureau ok.

DUCIE ISLAND, VP6 On Nov 19, 2340 UTC, the team decided to cancel the first activity from this new DXCC entity. At this very moment the Temarama was only 80 nautical miles away from Ducie, the weather was very bad and the forecasts were even worse. Furthermore they had a problem with their fuel filter which had to be cleaned every two hours. So they decided to turn around and head back for Pitcairn. At this point Mike,VP6AJ (K9AJ), and Vince, VP6VT (K5VT), were the only two doctors on Pitcairn. So if you ever dreamt of a first time activity from a new DXCC entity be quick and pack your radios!

KING GEORGE ISLAND, VP8, AN-010 Miroslaw, SP7JKW, will activate the call HF0POL until the end of 2002. He will operate mostly in CW/RTTY/PSK31/SSB on all HF bands including the WARC bands. QSL via SQ5TA. For more information check the internet at: http://www.qsl.net/hf0pol/ or http://qtc.radio.org.pl. --- Oleg, R1ANF/mm, is on the air from aboard the "Grigoriy Mikheev". Right now the ship is near the Canary Islands on the way to the Russian base Bellingshausen. He plans to activate also the Chilean research bases "Ripamonti" and "Pedro Cerda" where he will use a CE9 call then. QSL via RK1PWA.

LIBYA, 5A A few new licenses have been issued recently. 5A1ASC is the callsign of the clubstation Assaker, QSL via DK4HB. 5A1TA is Tark Abu Kris, QSL via EA3GIP, and 5A1HA is Haytm Hashim, QSL via DJ9ZB.

NIUE ISLAND, ZK2, OC-048 Mike, KM9D (CW), and YL Jan, KF4TUG (SSB), are momentarily on the air as ZK2MO and ZK2TO from Uluvehi in the northeast of the island. Their length of stay is unknown. QSL for both stations via OM2SA.

NORTH KOREA, P5 Bruce, KK5DO, regularly updates the operating times of Ed, P5/4L4FN, and puts them online at: http://www.amsatnet.com/p5.html. A good chance to catch him is on Sundays (Korean time) when Ed has his day off!

SIGNY ISLAND, VP8, AN-008 Mike, GM0HCO, recently active as VP8CMH/mm is now trying to activate Signy island (which belongs to the South Orkneys) signing VP8SIG from Factory Cove in Borge Bay. Due to bad weather down there he was not able to land on the island until now. If it is not possible for Mike to land on Signy this time he announced to try it again in January.

TARUTAO ISLAND, HS, AS-126 Members of the Royal Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST) obtained the permission to activate this island from Dec 8-15. They intend to sign E29AL on the usual IOTA frequencies but they also plan to work in RTTY on 14086, 21086 and 28086 kHz, PSK31 on 14070, 21070 and 28070 kHz and in SSTV on 14230, 21340 and 28680 kHz. The members of the team will be HS0GBI, HS1CKC, E21EIC, E20NTS, HS0/G3NOM, E20RRW, HS0XNO, HS4BPQ, E20HHK, HS9EQY and HS0ZCW (K4VUD). QSL via HS0GBI.

TONGA, A3 After staying on Niue Tommy, VK2IR, is now QRV from Tonga between Nov 29 and Dec 3. His callsign has not been anounced yet.

RURUTU ISLAND

Rurutu Island is situated 572 km south of Tahiti Island at the position of 22 deg 26' South and 151 deg 20' West. Besides of Maria, Rapa, Raivavae, Rimatara and Tubuai this island belongs also to the Austral Islands group. Rurutu's landsize measures about 32 sqkm and has the shape of the African continent! The highest two elevations are Taatioe (389m) and Manureva (384m) and another cliff is falling off 60m to the sea. Rurutu Island is surrounded by a reef but has no lagoon.

Sixty historical housings are testifying the first settlement on the island around 900 AD. Captain James Cook was the first European to discover Rurutu Island in 1769. The French made it their colony in 1889 and the first airport was opened in 1975. All 2000 inhabitants of the island have 24 hours electricity per day which is not certain in the Southern Pacific.

During January and July the Amoraa Ofai takes place. The men have to lift a 150 kg stone rubbed with coconut oil above their shoulders, women only 60kg. The usual evening activity on the island is to learn the local ritual dances and the Manureva Dance Group became wellknown all over the world.

Starting on Jan 1, 2002, Australian radio amateurs will be allowed to use also the frequencies from 3776-3800 kHz after the commercial mobile services finally stopped their activities there.

Paraguay increased the postage rates. Letters to foreign countries now cost 2 US Dollars and IRCs can not be exchanged at the post offices in Paraguay.
