OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to Danny's family and friends. For more on the life of Danny Weil, please go to the following Web site and read the obituary at: http://obits.mysanantonio.com//index.cfm?id=28006&fuseaction=viewobit

SILENT KEY. Jack Haden, VK2GJH (ex-T20JH), informs OPDX: "It's with much sadness that I wish to report the passing of Ian T. Anderson T20AA, of Funafuti, Tuvalu. Ian passed on last Friday, October 3rd, from a heart attack, aged 79 years. Ian was much travelled and formerly signed as GM4JAB, ZD9BT, VP8GZ, J87BD and T2ITA. A former commercial band operator, Ian enjoyed his amateur radio and was well known for his Scottish wit and humour. From Tuvalu he was very active on HF and six meters, mostly CW, before sickness prevented him operating further. Ian is survived by his wife Fipe, five children and three grandchildren. The Pacific has lost one of its more colourful radio amateurs." OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to Ian's family and friends.

UK, UZBEKISTAN. Naoki, JE7RJZ, will be visiting Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as a member of a TV crew between October 24-29th. QSL direct, with SASE, to W8LBZ (Sandusky Radio Experimental League, Inc., 2909 West Perkins Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870, USA), or via the bureau for DX.

VK9C, COCOS-KEELING ISLAND. The German team is now active as VK9CD. Their activity will last until October 23rd. The first night there they worked via satellite AO-40, and Hartmut, DM5TI, worked more than 100 stations. As this was been written, their activity was mostly on 20 and 15 meters CW/SSB/RTTY. REMEMBER: QSL this activity only to DJ5IW.

VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND. This DXCC entity has become very active lately. The German team active as VK9XW went QRT over the past weekend and is now on Cocos-Keeling Island (active as VK9CD). By the time you read this, the YL group should be active as VK9XYL until October 27th. Also (and just a reminder), look for Charlie, W0YG, to be active as VK9XG between October 26th and November 8th. Charlie informs OPDX that he will concentrate on the low bands and RTTY for the States. He mentioned that he has already shipped some of the equipment there and that David Burger, VK2CZ, who is going to the island about a week before him, will unpack and set up his station. David is also bringing antennas and will install them as well (antennas from Force 12). Charlie states, "While I cannot operate 24 hours a day, I will be on as much as practical considering I want to explore sights on the island a bit. My present intentions are to operate mostly when there are common periods of darkness between Christmas Island and the States which will also mean many other areas of the world will also have propagation and can work me then too." Please QSL direct only to W0YG. No bureau cards please.

ZK1, SOUTH COOK ISALNDS (Update). Don, K6IPV, informs OPDX that he and Dave, W6AQ, will arrive on Rarotonga about 9:00 PM (local time) on October 20th. After a decent nights sleep, they will start assembling the antennas. They will have N6FF's 40/75/160 vertical set up right at the high-water line, and Dave's SteppIR 3-element Yagi up at least 18 feet (maybe as much as 36 feet). The rig will be a K2/100 driving an ACOM amp. They hope to be on the air by the afternoon of the 21st. They are going to operate mostly SSB with some CW and, they hope, RTTY and PSK-31. Licenses are in hand. Don is ZK1IPV, Dave is ZK1AQT, and they will use ZK1SSB for the CQ WW SSB Contest. QSL Manager is W6ORD. They will not have a Web page. Don mentions that they will be next door to Victor, ZK1CG, who has been a tremendous help to them with their living and operating arrangements. They look forward to meeting him and Jim, ZK1JD, who has the mast sections they will use for the beam. Victor has offered his shack and antennas if they run into any trouble. Their wives will be with them, so they will not be on the air constantly before and after the contest. They will probably operate a lot of late afternoons and nights, getting tuned up for the contest. They will tear everything down on the afternoon of October 28th.
