German Adjective Endings
(also valid for
adjective-type nouns like ein Deutscher or ein Angestellter)
In the bold-lettered cells of Group I,
after the “base form” of der- words (nominative forms and the accusatives
identical to them) in the singular, the adjective ends in –e.
In the gold-shaded
cells in Groups I and II, the adjectives all end in –en, without
exception. Note that the gold-shaded section is in the
same location in Group I as it is in Group II.
All plurals in Groups I and II use adjectives ending in –en,
without exception: it is a flag
signaling that the next noun is in the plural.
In the blue-shaded
cells in Group II, after the “base form” of ein- words (nominative forms
and the accusatives identical to them) in the singular, the adjective takes the
same consonant as the equivalent form of der to “replace the missing
ending.” In the blue-shaded cells in Group III, all forms except masculine
genitive singular and neuter genitive singular forms use adjectives that take
the same consonant as the equivalent form of der to “replace the missing
ending.”
