Capitol Hill Front Gardens
A Selection of Favorites

We present a list of Capitol Hill gardens that, although small, manage to overcome challenges of light, water, space and soil. The gardens are grouped according to the direction in which they face. This primer is intended to illustrate how some of our club members and other neighbors have overcome the challenges of urban gardening to create lovely spaces we can all enjoy.

The gardens included here were not chosen as part of a contest or competition. They are merely gardens that at least one of our members found pleasant and of possible instructive value to others. If you'd like to nominate your favorites, send addresses to Wendy Blair. Please include the information about which direction the garden faces.

We hope to inspire especially beginning gardeners, who might find some of the established and larger gardens a bit overwhelming. We do list some of those, too, under the heading "Shock and Awe". These magnificent gardens tend to be on East Capitol Street, or on corners, or else they are under the care of professional landscaping companies. They are exemplary because they are able to present many more shrubs and perennials, so that one can get an idea what they look like before committing precious dollars.
