The Last Days?

Or How The Old Barn Came A Cropper

Images are from the first week of September, 1999)

The South side with doors open.

Here we see the shearing of the lateral beam just inside the South entrance.

The most frightening discovery of the day. It may have been our imaginations, but this split seemed to get worse over a 1/2 hour span. The horizontal beam just above is pretty much a goner and seems rotten all the way through (this beam is located just to the left of the North doorway). After getting a good look at this we decided any more work in the structure may not be advisable.

At first glance the corner is in decent shape, but closer scrutiny reveals that the lateral beam may be detaching from the vertical beam.

The north-east corner, probably the most solid.

The north-east corner foundation. These stones were probably hauled from the Hudson river. You can search for miles around without finding any stones (the soil is silty-sand).

North side showing doorway from outside.

That sharp piece delaminating above the vertical boards is actually the face of an 8" diameter beam. A slot had been neatly cut into the underside to accept the barnboards.
