The Brick House

The Farm at Northumberland

Looking east at the front entrance this 1999 photograph shows the barns in the distance. The house, built sometime in the 1840's is a good example of the neo classical architecture popular at that time. Note the brick entablature which frames the roof line. The bricks for the structure are said to have been manufactured locally in Gansevoort which lies less than a mile to the north. Saratoga Springs is just seven miles to the south. The house was built on what was once known as Gick road (then Old Gick, and now Route 50) and stood out as the only brick house in the immediate area, even to this day. The property, once over 88 acres, follows property lines that date back to land grants of early Colonial times.

This view of the rear shows the "bunkroom" and porch (with shutters in place). The bunkroom was constructed in the late 1930's by our family, the porch was added a few years later. The locals at the time referred to the this room as The Ballroom due to it's relatively large size and lack of interior walls, (I don't think they got into town much). Up until a couple of years ago there was a magnificent maple tree which would be at the right edge of this picture. Unfortunately a wind storm severly damaged it and it joined it's ancestors. I have some images which I will add to this site in the future.

Here is a view of my family (with a local couple at either end of the group) and the house prior to the addition being built (circa 1930's?).

Here is a view looking North up Route 50 prior to it being paved, probably in the 1930's. I believe it was called Gick Road in those days. This is about 9 miles North of Saratoga Springs. The house would be just to the right out of the photograph.

Here is an image of the road as it was being paved, again, probably in the late 1930's. This view is I believe just up the road in the previous photograph looking west across the road. I think the driver of the tractor is letting a child sit at the controls, probably my uncle Herbert Van Wyck. This scan is of a photo that is only about an inch across.
