The Loyal LoSer Survey Results -- TA DA!!

This LoSer survey was taken in early March 1997 by eric-of-multiverse.
55 LoSers responded (out of a total of around 260). Unfortunately, the
mothership came for eric before he was able to finish the compilation, so
that was done by "Leftover Dad." To properly interpret the results, one must
bear in mind that LoSers represent <1% of Leftover Salmon's fans and are a
"special" group with a "special" need -- to type electronic messages to people
(most of whom they've never met) rather than getting a "real" life! <grin>
Click on the question to see the answers:

Back to the list at the top 3. Male/female? Both? 20% were female. The rest were eiher male or uncertain... None listed "both." None listed "neither." Back to the list at the top 4. How did you first hear about Leftover Salmon?
  • from my sister who gave me Ask The Fish (thanks Vannessa!! you rule!!)
  • friend/tapers
  • Saw 'em open for WSP when they played my school last oct. i'm not a big wsp fan but the boys blew the panic away that night. bought atf the next day and been hooked since.
  • I'm not quite sure, but I think it was over the net on another discussion group... or I just saw it on someone's tapelist and thought it looked interesting.
  • From a friend of mine who's been listening to them for years.
  • I really don't have a clear memory... through friends...
  • Saw them on someones tapelist and thought the name was cool!
  • through daily reading of r.m.phish. I decided to go see LoS on a whim.
  • I really don't recall. I wish I did, cuz I'd thank them 10x over!
  • I was going to MerleFest last year and a friend of mine said they were really good, so we went to their set.
  • From friends who convinced to me to go to a festival at La Hood park here in Montana
  • I think it was a small piece on the boys in relix...went out and picked up Ask the Fish and was hooked
  • A friend I was trading Phish tapes with insisted on giving me a LoS tape in one of our trades. I have thanked him many times.
  • Um, they played at the South Main Cafe in Blacksburg when I was at Radford, couldn't make it but made their second DC show after I moved back home.
  • From my brother
  • they were at a small bar in Ann Arbor, MI called the Blind Pig. It was a friends birthday so we all decided to go there, we love music....and the name was funny.
  • Saw them in the parking lot before a Col. Bruce/ARU show. Thought they were on tour with ARU, didn't even realize they were the opening band until we went inside the venue together and they jumped up on stage.
  • On r.m.p... got some tapes, liked em so I went and saw em... still like em...
  • Through tape trades
  • A friend had a tune as filler on a Dead show I was listening to.
  • heard a bootleg
  • saw them accidentally at the OR. country fair summer '94
  • I live in South Royalton Vermont - came up here to go to law school - and since Vince's wife Kim is from here, people here know who they are. Jim, a guy who works in the local deli, was wearing a Leftover Shirt and told me about them. I saw them shortly afterwards.
  • word of mouth back in Blacksburg
  • Got them as a filler on a smoking 8/10/82 Dead tape. Must have been 94.
  • When i was moving out to Denver, a friend told me to go see them
  • I had heard about them through the grape vine, then I went out to Boulder to visit a friend over Christmas of 94. He had Bridges to Bert. I put it on. I smiled. I Danced. I twirled around. Then he told me they were playing the next couple of nights at the fox. Well, we went the next night (Dec. 30) and couldnt get in, but ended up under a table at the Oasis that night (a story for another day). When we went to Winter Park Jan 1, we found out they were playing at the Slope. We headed there after skiing for Dinner and drinks, and started to do this crazy little polka.
  • In Fall '94 Downerman/GrammarMan from rec.phish ordered me to hear them and sent me a mixed tape.
  • Word of mouth
  • They came to town, and several friends were going...I had heard mention of them on the net, but wasn't sure if I wanted to squeeze into the 8x10 for a band I'd never seen before. I called Jeff Stampes, who directed me to get my butt down there...I went, heard, and fell in love!
  • Either from the phish.net, or from a friend of mine who mentioned them when they were coming to town in Jan. '95.
  • I was living in the East, and a friend who visited Boulder told me I would LOVE them...two years later, I heard them at the Fly me to the Moon in Telluride, and the rest is history.
  • I heard about LoS completely by accident. One February night in 1995 my friend Ken and I decided to head into NYC to see what was going on and ended up at the Wetlands. We didn't know who was playing, but very soon found out about the whole Leftover Salmon thing.
  • My friend Jon was kind enough to introduce me to...as my friend Beth calls them...'The Salmon'...ha...just saying it makes me laugh
  • From Taz... she dragged me to see them in Baltimore in 1995.
  • a friend took me to the 8x10 last year, it felt like the upstairs floor was collapsing form the dancing.
  • a friend advised me to go to a show.
  • a friend of a friend was going to the show for his birthday, always up for new tunes my wife and I tagged along
  • Opening for Widespread last Fall
  • Friends introduced me to a live show
  • My best friend, Pam Feldmman, was living out in Durango and was relaying a story about this GREAT band she went to see every weekend...what they played, how it made her feel, etc. I knew I had to see them!
  • A guy had them on his tape list.
  • From a friend who lives in Boulder. He first gave me a tape that had LHSB on it!!
  • I don't quite remember but I think someone introduced me to Vince at a Party back in '89 or so and he invited me to come check out the band a few days later.
  • a friend, who had been to a show, played me a CD she had bought there. It was "Ask the Fish"
  • from a friend who saw them at the '95 Hog Farm festival
  • A friend went to the Telluride festival in '95 and came back raving about PECSG. He was so enthusiastic I went to check 'em out when they came to NYC a month or two later.
  • A friend sent me 4 songs as filler on a Phish tape.
  • watson festival, in NC, 1995
  • A friend (Mike Cutler) told me about them and we saw them here in Boulder in the early 90s (1991-ish) at JJ McCabes. Played lots of Femmes and Clash and other generally weird stuff.
  • my neice saw them at Ziggy's while at school , brought a tape home for christmas
  • Traded a Phish tape for a Salmon tape.
  • yep
  • From Mark I guess -- back in May '91. This was just before GMOTC (by the LHSB) was released. He said LoS was already going great guns.
  • my friend AJ told me about them about 3 maybe four years (ago).
Back to the list at the top 5. Did you like 'em immediately?
  • hell yeah, in fact, i LOVED 'em!!!!!!
  • YES!!!!!!!!!!!
  • see above
  • Oh yeah
  • As soon as I saw the live it was "4:20" all the way!
  • yes, but interest has grown over time
  • Yup
  • in the sometimes convoluted spelling of Matt Sweeney: deffinetly! (just kidding, Matt!)
  • oh yes indeedy
  • Yep (I even danced without knowing their music; usually I find that very hard to do...)
  • Indeed!!
  • Absolutely. Festival junkie.
  • Not as much as I do now.
  • When I heard them? Oh yeah.
  • Of course
  • OH YES. Definitely. major silly fun times all around. beautiful people
  • Immediately if not sooner... I liked the guys before I realized they were the band.
  • yep
  • Flunk Yes!!!!
  • Oh, Yeah!
  • of course
  • YES!!!!!!
  • Hell yeah
  • I was literally speechless!
  • absolutely. I didn't have a way of getting any tapes, though, since I had no computer and none of my friends had any LoS.
  • Actually no. At my first show i was impressed but i wasn't blown away. Probably because i was sitting on my a__ in the balcony rather than boogies my a__ on the floor!
  • How could you not? The room was bouncing. . .The floor was shaky. . . the steam was rising. . . and the Fat Tire was flowing. . . .
  • Of course, but I did not LOVE them immediately. That took seeing one show *live*.
  • Can I get an AMEN!!
  • oh yeah.
  • Yeah.
  • Nope...I LOVED them immediately
  • HELL YES I liked them immediately, my jaw is still scraping the floor of the Wetlands from that night.
  • No doubt about it...
  • YEAH BUDDY!
  • hell yes. I am a big Bob Maley fan and when the Salmonized Small Ax that was it.
  • Yes! I did!
  • Yeeeeesir!!
  • Ah yeah!
  • YES YES YES YES YES YES
  • Ayup.
  • Definitely, had to see them live.
  • Indeed.
  • Prettty Muuuch!
  • :-) natch.....
  • yes, sir...
  • Well, my friend had lent me Bridges before the show, and I wasn't that impressed. But from the first note of my first show I was hooked!!
  • No, I loved 'em!!!
  • oh yeah!!!
  • Yes siree!
  • so so , but about a year latter I saw them @ irving plaza in NY city and I' Still thank her every time I see her!
  • It didn't take *that* long!
  • yep
  • Sure, but it was more than a year later (9/92) when I first got to hear them. I don't think the tapers had heard of them yet (unless it was Michael Henry) and I don't think the band knew what tapers were at the time. The acoustics were awful. The words were impossible to understand. It didn't seem to matter to anyone. I've never seen so many folks having such a good time. So did we!
  • Hell yeah. from the frist note.
Back to the list at the top 6. What do you like best about the music?
  • its fun to dance to, vince's improvisation, mark!
  • the fact that it is so COMPLEX, yet more fun than anything I've ever heard. Mostly, the creativity.
  • besides the chaotic energy and great fans i love the rockin' bluegrass- the best of both worlds a little like the early nrps i've listened to for years
  • The fact that they don't take themselves too seriously on-stage, but are tremendously talented musicians. This makes for an incredible live show. I also enjoy the humor they present both in the lyrics and in stage presence, as well as the pot references.
  • It's a toe tappin good time... and the banjo!
  • everything... honestly...
  • The funny stuff, the fact that they are constantly joking around and that they sound like no other band I've ever heard.
  • Gosh, I tend to not think about things like that. I just prefer to be absorbed into it. If I have to hazard an answer, it would be the combination of the three "frontmen."
  • the energy - they took the principles of surge and release, and forgot about the release part. guess that comes after the show...
  • being able to DANCE and SMILE a lot (I find that any music that makes me smile is usually what I like), feeling like I am relating to the band during the show, dancing and smiling even when I'm listening to a tape
  • I like how laid back it is and how easy it is to dance to. I also like watching the boys have a blast.
  • kick-ass bluegrass/zydeco in the sense that when i listen to them, its impossible to stand still
  • Fun and danceable as well as complex and requires much talent to play.
  • LoSers make me smile and make me laugh and put up with my random posts ;)
  • The fact that it makes me groove like nothing I've ever heard!
  • SILLY, jams. damn silly. very danceable. different than anything I have heard. not comparable to anything I have heard
  • It is a blend of many features of American Musical History, yet it is new - progressive - and evolving in the jams. What I like best is the unique contributions of each individual member of LoS into the organic whole which spans times, cultures, and regions yet blends into one big good time.
  • good time vibes....
  • Well, I got a show from '94, so there was a keyboard/accordian player. I liked that there were great instruments (accordian/fiddle/mandolin/banjo). I am a sucker for a good keyboard player. Also, I love the fact that they have fun and you can tell even from the tapes.
  • Creativity; starting from something >simple and expanding
  • jammin' bluegrass
  • dancing fun, energy, and talent>
  • It kicks my a__, excuse the language, but it really does. This is the only band I have seen that can play so hard and fast for so long that *I* get tired of dancing before *they* get tired of playing. Plus, they always put a huge grin on my face, make me laugh, play incredible music, and are nice down to earth guys to boot.
  • energy
  • The Sponteneity (sp?), The energy and the positive vibes.
  • Festival!!
  • I like Bluegrass, so naturally I like what they do. But what does it for me is how they sort of distort bluegrass into rock and roll and ska, and at the same time they turn rock songs into bluegrass ditty's
  • It kicks my a__. And sometimes I like to dance and smile, when I'm not busy scowling and hissing.
  • The intensity mixed w/ humor
  • Makes me shake my a__ :)
  • I like the energy of the live performances. I don't find the music as transcendent as that of some other bands that I really dig, but it's hard to match these guys' enthusiasm, and the festival atmosphere at the shows. I have tons of fun at Salmon shows.
  • Accessable to everyone...bluegrass, jazz, cajun, rock...it's got a little of everything...it Bridges the Bert and makes us all move our feet, a more noble cause I can't imagine
  • I like the outright danceability of each and every song LoS plays. The improv jams are exciting and uniquely original as well.
  • One word...Energy
  • Hmmm.. tough one. The banjo really attracted me at first. Then actually seeing Drew do some of the things that he does pretty much blew me away. The transition from mandolin to fiddle to slide guitar without missing a beat. Simply incredible. Then put on top of all, Tye's solid groundwork and Vince's predilection for the insane and VOILA! we have a winner ladies and gentlemen.
  • the groove make ya move.
  • I appreciate the people it brings together.
  • The way it grabs you by the scruff of the neck and makes you jump around. sometimes it even makes the floor bounce too
  • The musicianship is as obvious as the fact that the guys are having a great time playing. That's why i can't stop smiling when i hear/see them.
  • Energy
  • It makes me feel free, alive and happy. Like I do when I'm at a festival on a sunny day.....
  • The banjo, mandolin, Vince playing the washboard, music you can dance to
  • It has great energy...and it has blugrass roots...and it's diverse...and it jams!
  • The collective musical skills and amazing energy that drips off the stage night after night
  • Energy truely focused. I was most impressed with the skills of the three pickers, and had to hear more.
  • positive vibrations, talent, showmanship, energy, humor, extended jamming...
  • Everything! ;) Actually, my favorite part is the incredible sense of FUN they bring to their shows.
  • Just about everything. I could tell that they were extremely talented musicians and to top it off they sounded like they were having the time of their life playing it. I HAD to get more of it!!
  • energy, spontaneity
  • High energy, feel-good music that's great to dance to!
  • ENERGY HIGH ENERY, and then I can't stop smiling
  • The energy, the positiveness and the sheer talent and skill. Did I mention exuberance?
  • energy eclecticism
  • I guess it's watching everybody from the band to the fans having such a great time. It's like the music is the transmission medium for the message, the energy, rather than the message itself. Maybe in a couple of years I'll come up with a better answer.
  • The stlye and the huge sound of the music. I also was getting into bela about the same time, and the first thing i thought was how much fun LOS was compared to bela. I love belas music, but it can get a tad "new age-y". I was trying to turn every one I knew onto LOS during this period.
Back to the list at the top 7. What is/are your favorite LoS songs?
  • Ask the Fish, Boogie, Boo Boo, Whiskey for Breakfast, Valley of Full Moon
  • Hmmmm.....all of them!?!? no, Reuben's Train, Rocky Road (especially jammin into Rider), PASTA, Zombie
  • All the good covers, Rueben's Train, Bend In The River, Paint It Black, Highway Song, Valley Of The Full Moon, i could go on forever (but couldn't we all)
  • Aargh... that's tough. I'd have to say Better, River's Rising, Two Step au Will/Madame Rosin, Reuben's Train... basically the ones that really make me move at shows. I also love the covers they do, especially when they spice them up with different and spontaneous lyrics.
  • Pasta, Carnival Time, Hot Corn/Cold Corn, 4:20 polka!
  • depends on what tape is in or where I am... River's Rising, Dance on Your Head, Pasta all come to mind
  • TV Dinner, Nothin But Time, Hot Corn/Cold Corn
  • Geesh, another toughie. River's Rising, 4:20 Polka, Green Thing, Paint it Black(or whatever you may prefer to call) Whether blasphemous or not, I just really dig the bluegrass tunes, whether standards or slamgrass tunes.
  • Squirrel Heads & Gravy, Hot Corn, Mama Boulay
  • Hot Corn/Cold Corn, 4:20 Polka, Jokester
  • Pasta, Ask the Fish, River's Risin, groovy other stuff, and Bob Marley cover tunes
  • jokester, ruben's
  • Rueben's Train, River's Rising, but I like most all of them.
  • Anything by Drew.
  • Get Me Outta This City, Whisperieng Waters, High on a Mountain Top
  • Mama Boulet, Boo Boo, Hot Corn Cold Corn, Stairway to Gilligans, PASTAAAAAAAAAAAA, too many to name.....
  • Ask The Fish, Pasta on the Mountain, Paint It Black, Zombie Jamboree, Jailhouse Blues, Rubens Train
  • Pasta, Driving Song, Ask the Fish, Catfish John
  • Tough to choose one, so I won't (OK, how 'bout Boscoe Stomp - for today at least)
  • Mama Boulet, although I really liked Paint it Black at Mama Kin last week
  • Boogie
  • hard to say...
  • Well, this week it's Squirrel Heads and Gravy - mostly because of the great version they played last week at the Metronome in Burlington - lots of mentions of my town and school and the bar they played in here (Terrapin Station) in 95
  • Valley of the Full Moon for now
  • Funky Mt Fogdown Funky Mt. Fogdown Funky Mt. Fogdown Funky Mt. Fogdown Funky Mt. Fogadown
  • Funky Mountain Fogdown!
  • Funky Mtn Fogdown, BOO BOOOO!!!!!, 4:20 Polka
  • Get Me Outta This City, River's Rising
  • Troubled Times (will they ever play it again?)
  • Gotta be Pasta on the Mountain, but I've not seen it live yet. I also dig Whiskey, Squirrel Heads, and others. The only one I really don't like is Stay Away Monday. Is that a Jimmy Buffett cover?
  • Some of the old Left Hand String Band Tunes (Gold Hill, Get me Outta this City, Valley of the Full Moon) River's Rising,
  • Whispering Waters is very hot. I love all of their Stones covers as well.
  • Well it's not a LoS song to begin with but I would have to say Pressure Drop would win out...They've just got to play it more when I'm around....then there's Hot Corn/Cold Corn, W&B...always a crowd pleaser, River's Rising, Rubin's Train...and many many others that I can't think of off the top of my head. I'll know that I'm really getting to know their music really well when I can 'call the song'...ever heard that before
  • Ask the Fish, Pasta on the Mtn, Stairway to Gilligan (title correct?), River's Risin, Flying Cloud Cotillion... I could go on and on and on.
  • Get Me Out Of This City,Rubens Train,KB in the Closet,Home Fires.
  • Just Before the Evening! The Bridge, Bend in the River, ATF, (all of them!)
  • Wake and Bake (clearly not their most challenging song, but wander around a festival singing with a couple hundred of your closest friends and you'll like it too!) Ain't gonna work tomorrow, River's risin, Ask the Fish, but I love all of them
  • Whispering Waters, Better, SH & Gravy
  • Why? When there are so many to choose from
  • Couldn't Be Better, Ask the Fish, Zombie, Corn, Outta this City, Rodeo Geek
  • Even though it's not a LoS song..Dark side of the Shrooms for my own personal reasons
  • River's Risin', Aint Gonna Work,....but really I like it all!
  • The Bridge (this is the time), Gold Hill Line, Stay Away Monday, Any Trad. Bluegrass
  • Breakin Through, Ask the Fish, Wispering Waters
  • Whispering Waters, Ask the Fish, Levee, River's Risin'...
  • River's Rising, High On A Mountaintop, Valley Of The Full Moon, Tu N'as Pas Aller, lotsa others!
  • >High on a Mountain Top, River's Risin', Blue Green Slime, Euphoria, Small Axe, Paint it >Black, Ask The Fish, and Stairway to Gilligan's to name just a few.
  • 2 step au will, stay away monday, lots others
  • Weeellll, I've always like Zombie Jamboree for sheer crazy dancing, and Just Before the Evening and Get Me Outta This City for pretty ones. Of course any Femmes or bizzaro medleys are always fun.... and any New Grass covers are Great!
  • Highway song, Boogie , River Rising , Valley of the full moon, s__t I like then all
  • River's Risin, Hot Corn/Cold Corn, (stop me before I list all of them)
  • Hey Joe, Pasta,Whiskey for Breakfast, Ask the Fish, SH&G, Rize Up WakenBake
  • Highway Song, Euphoria, Ask the Fish, and ALL the fiddle tunes where Mark plays clawhammer style and trades off with Drew on fiddle -- Green Thing/WBB/OTWF, FCC, SH&G, etc.
  • I like them all (seriously) but I really get into the quick picking songs Rubens train and Hot corn and whiskey.
Back to the list at the top 8. Who is your favorite LoS member?
  • Mark Vann the Banjo Man withOUT the Banjo plan; because he is in MHO the best musician that i have ever heard, and he has the coolest dad
  • Drew Emmitt is my hero!
  • Mark because i love watching a great picker work and i've got that geographic bias (i'm originally a dc "gangster" as well)
  • Another toughy. I think Vince's stage presence defines their live show to a certain extent, but without the incredible talent of all the others, the music would obviously be lacking. Entertainment-wise, I'd have to say Vince . Musically, I'd have to say Drew.
  • Vince
  • I love them all, they each have incredible talent and unique qualities
  • No one in particular, I'd have to say Micheal (spelling?) cause no one ever says anything about him
  • Probably Drew, although I hate to play favorites. The voice and all the instruments...wow.
  • Vince. fffeeessstttiiivvvaaaaaaaalll!!!
  • Tye-- If you watch him at a show, he does his own funny things, but in a more subtle way than Vince
  • They all were nice to me
  • Tye cause (he) just plain grooves
  • Hmmm....Drew.
  • Drew
  • Vince, Tye (a close second place)
  • The Fish :), Mayor McCheese :), and Three Cheers for Jack Thompson for making the show go on!
  • Drew
  • Probably Tye since he just keeps his mouth shut and freakin lays down the groove.
  • Vince -- he never seems not to be loving it all
  • Drew
  • tye
  • I'd have to say Drew - I just love his voice so much and am a fan of the mandolin. Second prize goes to associate member by blood - Bryant Vann - for being such a cool guy, getting me on this list, and being such a great contributor to the scene, getting info out, etc.
  • not even gonna try
  • see #7
  • Anyone who plays the slide mandolin like Drew does gets my utmost respect!
  • Not quite sure. The banjo dude seemed pretty cool when I talkd to him at the Metronome, and the bass player was making funny faces when I took his picture which was rather cool.
  • Probably Mark. I just find his Banjo playing and style fun to watch. Then Vince, since he's got a great sense of humor. Then Drew, because he's an amazing musician. The Pete Sears, if he's playing keys. And well, the bassist Tye and the Drummer (?) have never especially moved me.
  • Drew or Vince or Mark or Tye or Woo. Roll the dice
  • Drew ;p
  • Dunno. I get into watching the three frontmen, can barely hear Tye, and don't notice Michael, but the latter two do a fine job of providing a ground for the soloing.
  • Drew...no doubt...
  • Tye. Not that they're all not talented, but I shared a plane ride from Denver to Chicago with him and he was just really nice and excited to meet a fan in an unlikely place.
  • TYE...he has a super amount of talent...he's fun to watch...and if you listen really hard...he stands out.
  • Probably Vince because he looks like he's having TOO MUCH FUN!
  • Drew, I do a little 6 string strumming myself and he such an inspiring player.
  • Vince
  • Vince's energy/comedy - and - Drew's godlike tri-instrumental ability are certainly the hook for me (so to speak), but they're all the tops in my book.
  • What a silly question. Why not "who's the cutest?"
  • They All Jam
  • I can honestly say that I like all of them too much to pick just one.
  • Have to be Vince because he made me laugh so hard
  • Drew for his musicianship, Vince for his energy, and Mark for looking so happy on stage.
  • Mayor McCheese (the safe political answer)
  • Drew
  • Drew - but i like 'em all.
  • Drew, but it's tough. He's amazing on all his instruments, and he sings most of my favorite songs.
  • Drew!! Incredible is an understatement!
  • drew (mandolin players amaze me)
  • The Mayor.
  • I'm most impressed by Drew but I think they all just amaze me
  • Bert
  • bert, of course
  • I've been fortunate to get to know them all and they're ALL super folks -- 'course I'm partial to Mark!
  • Just wanted to give my 2 cents to the list about the survey. On one point especially.... There's no way to say which one of the Salmon is the favorite, or which one would be the preference for lessons, as has been evident from the replies. Just listening to the Bridges to Bert album tonight, it is clear that it's such a special blend. By the way, can you guys get the keyboards back? Thanks for the music!
  • This is a silly question.
  • It's probably Tye, the guy really gets down on stage, and let him sing more. :-)

Back to the list at the top 11. What is/are your favorite LoS experience/s?
  • talking to the band before the show in Athens
  • 1)Pasta from Ripley's (Cincy) on 9-29-96; 2) Reuben's>Junction>Pig in a Pen>Molly & Tenbrooks>Doin my Time>Reubens from Earlham U. on 2-2-97. 3)Rocky Road from 2-22-97 Sycamore Gardens in Cincy
  • 2/5/97 Nashville my only "real" show and i was buzzing from it for days. grovel grovel
  • I think the 2/20/97 Hampden-Sydney show was my favorite, simply because they were a lot goofier on-stage than I'd seen them before or have seen since, and they did so many different things, like Blister in the Sun with a monologue by Vince, Rockytop w/ Hotel California lyrics, etc. I also went with a group of really great people and really danced my arse off. The next night at the Bayou was great as well, because I got to meet so many fellow LoSers, but concert-wise, I'd have to say the previous night was better.
  • Wake n' Bake encore @ the Granada Theatre in Lawrence
  • Without a doubt ROAM tops them all... Asheville 2.17.97 and Winston- Salem 10.24.96 are other highlights...
  • 11.30.96 cause it was so odd and it was my first show.
  • 2/17/97--standing 4 rows back in the center was just incredible.
  • getting a big smile from Vince after the 2/21 Bayou show, cuz I yelled "festivaaal" after people had stopped cheering & clapping
  • Warrenton-- it was my first LoS only show and there were so many kinds of people!!! There were even friend's parents there that I've known since elementary school!!!
  • At the only show I saw everybody was completely belig and during one of the songs, I can't remember which one, I noticed that my sister and a friend of hers were on the stage dancin' around with the band members (they were called the "boogie sisters"). I had a wonderful session with the band once they got off the stage. These experiences definitely made the night.
  • Listening them while driving through the White Mountains and they were in the middle of an insane jam when i broke through a little patch of fog and came out into a clear patch of mountains, sunshine , and snow. orgasmic to say the least.
  • All of 'em!
  • WARRENTON!!!!!!!!!! and talking/listening to the guys before/after shows.
  • see above and ROAM definitely
  • gettin silly with Vince 9-28-96 after another show at the Blind Pig.
  • My first two shows (opening for ARU, first New England LoS shows), my most recent two shows (Memphis on Marley's Birthday), and the next two shows (whenever they may be).
  • 2/14/97 Tuscaloosa, AL, 1st LoS-only show........
  • This newsgroup is definitely a highlight.
  • There's always something unbelievable about that first show that's just so magical. Until I've been to many more shows and know the music backwards and forwards, that'll be my favorite.
  • ditto
  • seeing them outside at the OR country fair...great surprise to hear music that great (we didn't even know their name 'til after they played) outside in the sunshine with kind folks all around buggying down, with plenty of dancing space!
  • Well, for the longest time it was the Metronome 95 show - cause Mike Gordon showed up and there was that fiddle player, and it was such a slamon show. But last weeks show (2/28/97) involved lots of references to my town - we had a huge contingent up in Burlington for the show, plus I got to chit chat with the band, etc. - so I guess the two shows are tied.
  • hmmmmm.... probably all the sets at MerleFest
  • Seeing Vince hand out the Salmon platter during Ask The Fish
  • Meeting Vince at a Col. Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners show.
  • My 1st Show, & when they played in South Royalton last year. The whole town came out & Terrapin Station stayed open REAL late, & they just kept playin & playin & playin & we had a HUGE pit formed at the front of the stage with all these slammin law students.
  • When I took off my bra and threw it on stage for Drew.. ;-) But seriously, probably when they played Gilligan's Stairway to Ironman the other month at the Fillmore. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that, and well, was highly amused.
  • Took a week off last year and spent the week w/ LoS from 4/20 thru Merle Fest. Many shows!!
  • Trax in Charlottesville, last October 25
  • The live experience. I guess the show I saw last month, since a friend of mine who was a huge skeptic ("I don't like Leftover Salmon"), and whose musical taste I respect a great deal, got berted.
  • 1994, Chalet Suisse in Nederland, CO. Michigan Mike was wandering the room ensuring that EVERYONE (including the Band) was on the Bridge that night. They ripped that place apart...the Chalet has an indoor waterfall, about 25 feet high. They were tearing apart a smoking 'Reach', and Mark Vann, the Banjo Man with the Banjo Plan, climbed the waterfall, and didn't come down for a looooong time. Later, during a mighty fine 'Rise Up', Vince led us all out the back door....it was a full moon, and we all danced around like idiots outside, singing, dancing, and banging on whatever we could find, circled around and came in the front door.
  • My favorite LoS experience was the show I saw two weeks ago at the Wetlands. It will go down as one of the all time greats I assure you.
  • Warrenton, VA...Courthouse lawn...or should I say in the street in front of the courthouse lawn. There was a ton of energy...oh and a lack of power at one point...and the 15 or so LoSers were helping to Bridge...Bert...in a big way...just to give you an idea of where things were at...often times it was our energy being funneled into the little kids and back out of the kids into their parents that really got things a rockin'...Overall that show and the people at it created one of the most positive LoS experiences that I can remember.
  • The Warrenton gig by far. The energy that was flitting about touching young and old was intense. And the fact that when I arrived, they were warming up and i *ran* down the street, made a beeline for the tapers' area, saw a taper friend who I know that grabbed my cords and fed them into the array while I unpacked the rest of my stuff. I hit "record" literally 3 seconds before they started. I was so proud of myself. ;-)
  • my first show
  • I have LOTS! I'd have to say just about every one!! OK, I realize that's not fair-I'll pick one... Their first time touring Texas, my boyfriend and I flew out (from CA) and did the TX Salmon Tour! We tore up the state, and it's big! They played the White Rabbbit in Austin, a psychedelic rock 'n roll club. WILD! ( in addition to a place in Houston and one in...was it Dallas?) People were blown away, of course, but they loved it! Me, Too!!
  • Psychedelic Ball - Santa Cruz or HSF in Bear Valley. Everyone is a memerable experience.
  • Has to be the Sycamore Gardens, Cincy show -- First full show and a great one, forced 4 friends to go who loved it, spoke to Mark and Tye which was cool. (Again, if anyone has this show....)
  • When they played a Sex Pistol's song - "God save the Queen" It brought the place to a riot.
  • Asking them questions for the FAQ, getting to know them as ppl, risin up with them, dancin barefoot in the mud with Vince.
  • Seeing them play at a small outdoor venue and being the only one to dance in front of the band during the whole first set. Must have had the biggest smile on my face.
  • 1. Going to the show last Sat at wetlands with the woman I am in love with, 7 months after we met at the abovementioned LoS show. 2. Having Vince grab a chillum(sp?) out of my hands as we were groovin in the front row, so that he could partake in what we were partaking in. >(at the 8/2/96 show)
  • Hog Farm, Walking into The Fillmore with the band for the first time, Telluride main stage, Merle Watson fest, Stage Stop in Rollinsville, Gold Hill Inn and all the quality time I've gotten to spend with this band who've sorta become my 2nd family over the years.
  • Seeing them play outside during a Street festival in Breckenridge, Colorado during winter; and seeing them play on the back of a flatbed in Warrenton, VA in the summer. Also, out in dah streeet-ah. Though the night that the clocks got turned back in October and they played for about 3 and a half hours was pretty fun, too.
  • my first show, the other 3 '96 Fillmore shows, and the "Jammin' with Salmon" late-night circus tent set at High Sierra Music Festival '96 w/Sam Bush et al.
  • ROAM, without a doubt. Probably my favorite concert experience, overall.
  • Bridging the Bert during my first show and then spreading the word to as many people as would/will listen.
  • midnight jam at watson fest, april 1996, they tore the roof off the place
  • The Telluwhut (Else) Festival. (July 31st 1997 will be my second)
  • ROAM
  • 1/31/97
  • yep
  • 9/4/92, Nederland, CO, where I first saw a HUGE crowd ready to dance about 15 minutes BEFORE the band started and then boogied their behinds off until I caved and went home around 1:30 -- our "waiter" had never seen such a scene (Matt, you with me?) and started the evening with a most proper bow-tie -- by midnight, he and the rest of the staff had had to go home and raid their refrigerators to bring in more beer after the place ran out and he NOW had his tie off and was wearing an LoS t-shirt and was boogying his own behind off! AND Warrenton -- the part where the street started empty and stayed that way through maybe three numbers when a couple of 4-year olds went out and broke the ice -- then a 2-year old (maybe even younger) lass staggered out to a spot in the street right in front of the stage where Drew was playing and just stopped and stared up at Drew like he was, indeed, THE MAN! -- then the street filled to the point where there was barely room to stand. It was that way until the town fathers made them quit -- the band had packed up and everything was again quiet and there were Warrenton yuppies still standing around with their kids asleep in their arms -- still too charged up to leave -- still wonderin' what had happened there. As one said to me, "I've been coming here to these concerts for years, but NOBODY has ever danced in the street before. THIS should happen EVERY time!
  • ROONNNEY MOUTAIN FEST in upstate NY Craziest party I think i was ever at, and I have seen about 200 deadshows and about 70 Phish shows
Back to the list at the top 12. If you could take a lesson with one of the band members, who would it be and why?
  • Mark! ! ! !, i wanna learn to play the banjo better
  • Drew, because I play Mandolin and guitar, and you know, he's the BOSS!!!!!
  • Mark for that whole banjo but it wouldn't matter because i'm musically inept anyway.
  • Drew. The guy is amazing in so many respects. He is extremely talented on guitar, mandolin, and violin, and has a great voice taboot. I'd love for him to show me some stuff on mandolin.
  • I'd like to take a lesson from Vince cause he's just so damn cool!
  • Drew because he can play the hell out of a fiddle
  • As much as I admire Drew, I would really love to play the banjo.
  • Drew - I envy anyone who can play the mandolin.
  • I don't really want a lesson because it would be futile, but I would like to hear Drew talk about playing and what inspires or influences him, etc...for that matter any member of the band talk about stuff like that
  • I'd love to be as good at improv as Vince
  • Definately Drew because I really have an appreciation for his multi- instrumental talent. I would also love to be schooled on the finer points of fiddling (and the not so fine points...)
  • Drew, I would like to learn mandolin stuff from him, although I am a drummer so I don't know how well I would do!
  • Drew, because of him and Sam Bush I want to buy a mandolin.
  • Drew, because he's the man
  • Tye- he is quietly silly, and I have always liked trying to play the Bass
  • I'd take a lesson in improvisational poetry from Vince.
  • Drew...
  • Mark because banjo picking always has fascinated me. It seems utterly impossible to go that fast and hit all of the right notes.
  • Tye -- I've always wanted to be a bassist
  • Drew, he is God
  • Mark - banjos are so sexy.
  • Mark. I can play guitar, and I used to play viola (violin-ish). I would love to add some banjo influence to my overall playing style.
  • Mark Rules. Definately Mark.
  • Oh, i don't know. Probably Vince since i play the guitar
  • I wouldn't take a lesson from one of the band members, although I would be interested in Vince's philosophy of life.
  • Mandolin lesson from Drew. He's my mandolin idol. I'm trying to learn b/c of watching him play.
  • Drew...for reasons that cannot be stated here on the grounds that they may incriminate me...
  • I don't know. Taking a lesson from any of them isn't important to me.
  • Drew...I've always had the most respect for his musicianship, and have learned a lot from him just as a person.
  • I would take a lesson from Drew. He plays guitar, mandolin and violin, all with equal precision and melody. I'm an amateur guitarist myself, and I barely have time to practice one instrument, what his secret?
  • Gotta say Tye...in fact the more I watch him play the more I realize that a 6 string bass is what I would really want to try and play one day. It just looks like too much fun...although I think I could start my lesson on a 4 string bass...just to be a little more traditional.
  • Well, I have ALWAYS wanted to learn how to play banjo...
  • Drew, the man knows what he's doing.
  • Drew, because I play the violin.
  • Drew and Mark (I play guitar and love to tinker with the banjo)
  • Probably Drew b/c I'm a mandohead
  • I would love to jam on the fiddle.
  • Mark because he's self-taught and just so f__king good!!!!!
  • I think Mark because I love the Banjo.
  • Drew, b/c I play guitar and he makes it look so easy, and because I would love to play mandolin. I'm not so turned on by fiddle.
  • Drew - cause I'm kinda a mando player too!
  • Vince Herman. I play guitar, and I think it would be more fun to jam with him than with Drew.
  • Drew. The guy is amazingly talented.
  • Well, I'm no musician. It would probably be Vince, just so I could spend an hour or two rappin' with the wild man!!
  • I have no musical talent of my own, so I wouldn't want to waste any one of the fellas time. I'd love to be able to play any instrument 1/10th as good as Drew plays any of his. Same goes for Mark and his banjo playing.
  • drew or mark (mandolin amazes me but banjo is cool too)
  • Michael. He's a fantastic drummer. Start watching him sometime -- you get mesmerized and can't stop.
  • Drew, the maldolin is such a great sound
  • Tye, because I'm a bass player.
  • nope
  • Like a previous poster, it wouldn't do any good and I know it! In fact I just gave Mark my Martin D-35 guitar. Vince took one look at it and said, "Hey, these strings are GREEN!" Yeah, from disuse! It only had five strings, but Vince made it sound OK anyway!
  • I don't play, but I would like to learn how to play banjo.

If graphed, my CD collection would look like a family tree -- branches sticking out in all directions. Hey, I even liked the Medieval filler on the Sam Bush tapes eric-of- multiverse sent me!

Back to the list at the top 20. What do you think the future of LoS holds?
  • me attending more shows!
  • Salmon Festivals willl grow!!! Crowds will NOT be Phish like, but will increase to LARGE theaters.
  • how 'bout another ROAM?? it's gotta be the ultimate FFFFFFEEEEESSSSSSTIIIIIVVVVVVVAAAAALLLL!!!!!!!
  • If this current tour is any indication, I think they are going to be HUGE very soon. I think they have a very promising future and hope they continue to thrive as musicians. They love what they do and so do we, and I think they will continue making people happy for years to come.
  • jail. Just kidding... they will make lots and lots of money, and will buy their parents brand new cars (hold out for a Lexus, Bryant!!).
  • bigger venues, more followers, and a hell of a good time
  • I almost find it hard to believe that LoS will get HUGE. I just can't see their music appealing to everyone. I love it and know many who do but I think the mainstream would really appreciate it as much as the rest of us, unless MTV suddenly said that LoS was cool, then they'd get big. :-) I'd like to see them play large theaters and places like that, where the acoustics are good, and you aren't jam packed next to people and come out of the show reaking of smoke.
  • lots and lots of fun!!
  • very kind things for you, me, us, and the fellas
  • Hopefully lots more music and FESTIVAALS!!!!
  • Lots more good fans, and wonderful festivals
  • from what i've seen, bigger and bigger festivals and more folks being blown away by LoS. They deserve any kind of success, and I've been hearing people talk about probable shifts to bigger venues over time, and while I saw Phish go through the same thing and was somewhat dissapointed, realize this: consumer amerika is getting to like much better music, and we should all applaud that!
  • Bigger venues, bigger FESTIVALS!
  • To Quote Vince "Too much fun!!!"
  • probably bigger venues :(, but on the bright side, that means lots more kind fans like our net family.
  • one big festivaalaaaaaaaalaaaaaaalaaaaaaaal (record skipped)
  • Too Much Fun & the return of Mayor McCheese
  • Good Touring band.. I think it will be hard for them to move onto bigger venues since so much of their vibe is lost there.... Having seen them play big arenas opening for WSP, I'm just not sure this will work....
  • who knows, hopefully a shoe contract or something ;)
  • Hopefully many, many more shows. I'd hope for longer runs at somewhat intimate settings -- Fillmore, Somerville Theater, Beacon Theater type of places. Lots more appearances jamming with guests and as guests at shows and festivals; Furthur 2?
  • they will conquer the world with their message of peace, love and waking and baking
  • much growth in po;ularity ... maybe to annoying extents...i hope for them, but not for us (being selfish)
  • Only good things for them (and us as fans too!) Can't imagine seeing them in large venues, but if it happens, well, I'll still be there and they deserve to make lots of cash!
  • I have no idea. I'll only say that I can't imagine these guys being mainstream, just like Phish will never be mainstream (no matter how hard people try to make them or say they are).
  • Well, the made a decent sized venue jump since their last visit to cincy, and their name seems to be all over the newsgroups, so I think that people disenchanted w/ other scenes will try to find solitude among the salmonytes.
  • They will continue to grow, and the Bluegrass community will continue to take hold of them. I don't think they will become HUGE rock stars, cause they aren't rock musicians. BUT. . .For awhile at least, all sorts of people will come out and shake to the tunes. Then, they will gradually go down in history alongside the great American musicians like Willie Nelson, Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard, Woody Guthrie, Buckwheat Zydeco, Sun Ra, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
  • Don't know, and I'm a little worried. I like the way it is now...selfish of me to not want them to get too big, but I can't help it.
  • Let's see what happens when Euphoria hits the stores. Salmon's getting bigger, and with their emphasis on pasta references, I think that portends trouble as they grow. We'll see more & more people who go to shows just to get f__ked up. Don't get me wrong:
  • As much success as they want...I expect them to stay in smaller venues and festival atmospheres...I don't ever expect to see them in a larger indoor venue. The future will bring LoSers together as family, and the band will gladly welcome us into their musical home they have built, as long we we all enjoy what they do.
  • I think the word is DEFINATELY spreading about these guys. I see them playing bigger venues within the next two years, eventually acheiving the status of BT or WSP. I'm really hoping a lot of the idiots I see at Phish shows do NOT find out about us however. They would redefine what a LoSer is.
  • I have this feeling that they are going to grow into the likes of a Black Crows. I think the core group of people who are into LoS now will comprise the core group down the road...more outside venues...and if it were up to me...more shows in Theater like settings...no seats on the first floor please.
  • I really think the sky is the limit for these boys as far as marketability is concerned and public appetite, but I could see them settling in quietly as a middle-sized venue attraction and liking it that way. Of course, that's up to the fans...
  • they will continue to build a loyal family of fans, shows move to bigger theaters.
  • More great shows, and more friends!
  • A 20 show run at the Fillmore!!! Oh you're right, that was Tom Petty. Ok a lot more festivals and enough success so that they can all live as well as they'd like. :)
  • Although I wish them great success I don't think it will be as massive as some fear - they're all great musicians but some people just don't get it (as the mixed crowd at the recent Cincy show illustrated).
  • More Jammin' Shows
  • Ask the Fish.
  • I think they will get a bigger following but I sure hope they never get as big as the Dead. Seeing them in a small venue was the best. With such a wide variety of people at the shows, the words gonna get around that they are band to check out.
  • I think the sky's the limit, but I also think the core is relatively small and very community oriented. This is a huge plus.
  • Not quite sure, but I hope for a long, healthy and prosperous musical adventure 'round the world!
  • bigger venues, unruly crowds, the lessening of the good vibes. Hearing that people show up to gigs without tickets et. al. is a bummer. LoS will probably only top country charts, if that. Solid, low volume record sales, no multi platinum success. no flashy videos, PECSG is too close to bluegrass for many people to call it anything but bluegrass. Fortunately, the boys are young and hopefully they'll stay together long enough for a lot of people to enjoy hearing them play. hope your survey gives you some fun data.
  • lots of good vibes and good music.
  • I don't see them getting THAT much bigger. I just don't see a band so strongly rooted in a style like bluegrass appealing to the masses. I think they'll get big enough to draw mid-size theatres throughout the country, but not so big that the "scene" spreads out of control. And that would be fine by me! :) Of course, I also repeatedly said that Blues Traveler or Phish would never become mainstream, so what the hell do I know??
  • Fame and fortune for the band (I hope) and a "school" of very loyal LoSers!!(already forming)!!
  • selfishly - I hope euphoria stinks and nobody new joins the party and we can all go back to the bayou and not be like sardines. realistically, lots of great things...they have what it takes to move to the next couple of levels... songwriting, energy, ability.
  • Beer and fruit pies followed by weight gain and tight leather suits.
  • I don't know, as long as they keep playin!
  • That's a tough one. They're getting bigger and bigger, but I don't know if their approach to music can work in an arena setting. I'm just glad I got to see them in a small club. I never got to see Phish that way. I'm also making a point of getting out to see more bands while they're young, cuz you can never go back.
  • prosperity
  • I'm as mystified as anybody here. Heck, the probability that they would get this far was somewhere between slim and none, and yet here they are. You folks have watched other bands "grow up" and have a much better feel for where this is headed. Before this I've only noticed musicians after they got fairly big.
  • Get them on the clifford ball bill!!!!
