This is the Tungabhadra River that flows through Hampi. For over 3 centuries, Hampi was the capital of a large Hindu empire, in what is now most of south India, but the city was completely destroyed when the empire fell to invaders from northern India in the mid-1500s. It's surprising, though, how much still remains. I recommend a visit it if you're anywhere nearby.
Note: the drive from Goa, while fascinating, included miles of some of the worst roads I've seen in India.
