This is the smallest of three observatories built by the great (and eponymous) Maharaja Jai Singh. The ones in Jaipur, and particularly Delhi, are much larger, but this is the only one that could still be called a working observatory, with sunrise, sunset, temperature, humidity and other facts noted down on large chalkboards on veranda of the observatory house. I've now been to all three, but this visit was opportunistic rather than planned.
The Lonely Planet tells me that the observatory is just south of the Tropic of Cancer. Tropical! And I thought it was just hot!
