You follow passageways under the buildings from each courtyard to the next. We end up at the Golden Temple, an ornate little temple hidden in a building down the street from the new Patan Museum and Patan's Durbar Square (literally Palace Square; every town has one), where we finally see other tourists. The temple is really just a little courtyard with a walkway around 3 sides. The fourth side is a huge two storey gold altar; a small structure, a shrine, fills most of the central floor space. Turtles wander around the sanctuary, below the walkway where we're standing. The walkway around the 3 walls has a railing, with prayer wheels and votive oil lamps every 6 inches or so. I'm recommending the walk to all comers, after we get back to Delhi: "just wait a few months till the book is published" [it should be published by now! ]
The monkey in the picture is holding a jackfruit, in the Golden Temple.
